  • sorry guys this info is not truly correct, close but the land migration docent ad up correctly, never has and never will. fun stuff

  • like if your doing this for an assignment :D

  • @gregrutz Ever heard of Sir Fred Hoyle?

  • @188metalhead881 The dummy who named the Big Bang.

  • @gregrutz The mathematician and astronomer dummy? Yeah, that's him.

  • 142 people think 'God dun did dat'.

  • @TheBiAtheist All I can say is Sir Fred Hoyle. ;)

  • @gregrutz Nothing truer has ever been said.

  • @gregrutz : who tol d u it s relegion stupid

  • Okay, this video would be way less fucking boring if the guy would just speak the way normal people do instead of leaving 12-second gaps with no information whatsoever. It doesn't add to the "wonder" of earth element at all, it's just a huge fucking pain in thea sss. You know, the reason why I slept through class when I could have been learning stuff at a reasonable pace. Bullshit.

  • Shut up, assholes. Faith and science co-exist, just as apples and oranges co-exist. In other words, shut your fucking mouths and watch the video.

  • you should see "Earth infact Growing"

  • Great intro to the formation of rocks and their cycles through geologic time.

  • i think South should be on the top of maps

  • it happed in 6.0000 years not 6000 lol

  • The narrator's voice sounds more irritating than the sound a baby makes while being thrown off a cliff. God I'd love to stab that guy in the neck.

    p.s. god doesn't exist....

  • Gotta love how all the science videos posted are always subsequently attacked by the "God Botherers" denouncing science. The Bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go.

  • But how man made? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is rly impossible... so impossible... nothing can create itself..

  • @jesusloves53 If nothing can create itself then how did your god create himself? Your "something can't come from nothing" ideology goes both ways so don't be a hypocrite.

  • @PaganBorn79 He didnt create Himself.. He actually was present the whole time... u dont have to find that possible.. u dont have to think that thats logical but just know that we believe that/..

  • @jesusloves53 oh so the universe can't possibly come from nothing but your god can because he was always there???? That's some sound logic right there. Too bad for you science actually uses evidence and models to discover fact while you rely on a book written by bronze age men. lol

  • why is it impossible for u guys to just believe that God created this universe? i dont get that

  • @jesusloves53 "why is it impossible for u guys to just believe that God created this universe? i dont get that"

Because if you believe that the Bible is true, and that God created the Universe, you also must believe that all the other stuff in the Bible is true. The problem is that all that other stuff doesn't jive with scientific observation. Therefore there is no reason to believe the assertion that God created the Universe. Plus, Christianity wasn't the first religion, nor last.

  • @jesusloves53 The only record we have of God is from the time frame that man has written things down. Neanderthal man did not have an alphabet like we do, so the whole existence of God is based on what men have written. It is possible that God did all this, but not 8-10000 years ago, that is just pure ignorance. This world will be here long after we are gone, we are only here for a moment in the big picture. Whether it was God or just pure science, it's here, live on it.

  • @jkadvices

god is just the pre historic man's ways of explainin basic natural phonemonon.. or shud i say his inability to express the natural process(phenomenon) n hence "GOD" was created..

eg: a tribe in African jungle still believes that the aeroplane passing above their head everyday is a "god's symbol"

  • why's the spinning too long??????

  • @jkadvices I've got some bad news about santa clause and god, maybe nobody told you yet...

  • how is it possible to make ppl who belives in religion understand , that this is the way earth began, specially muslims ...? u guys rly dont want to hear what they told to me when i was at school!

  • Cool!

I ecspecially like the part of the shifting continents.

  • oh i am fascinated with our Earth. Thank you ..

  • Interesting. Thanks for the quick geology lesson.

  • awesomeness!!!

  • awesome metamorphing over the years, i wonder what awaits us

  • hai ramesh

  • This is just fucking cool! I'll never stop learning! Everyday is an adventure, every meal is a banquet, and every paycheck is continued financial enslavery! Give me Science or give me death!

  • i think they showed this in imax science center

  • learned about this last year in 6th grade.

  • My favorite part was the shifting of the land masses shown over time. I called in my 9 year old and he gave it all his attention. I paused it at 90-80 million years and pointed out where we would be (Missouri) and how that shallow ocean is the reason we have limestone caves and seashell fossils are thick on the ground here. Thanks for a marvelous illustration!

  • hey, its a very nice clip.

i only didnt like the graphical model of the earth you used when you showed the changes over the time. its very interesting, but i think simple pictures are better to use there.

  • mountrushmore is granite isn't it? and lava cannot sculpt facs on rock, cuase it sorta sounded like that.

  • Yes, it is granite.

  • woow

  • What most amazes me about the thought of Pangaea isn't the one massive continent, it's the endless span of ocean that covers more than half the planet.

  • Awesome

  • awesome

  • great stuff

  • All of this is obviously wrong. The earth was made instantaneously by God about 6,000 years ago.

    Poof! And there it was.

    Don't you know anything?

  • Pfft, you're two days late! We already had this conversation! :P

  • lol

  • Good show.

Why do people bring up god?

God is pure fake, like Nigerian emails.. you will not win a ticket to hevn.. you are a sucker for eternal life, which is not yours

  • *loool* :D ..those emails aren't real? are you shure? ..I mean are You reallyreally shure??

  • As sure as 2 + 2 = 4.

There is no chance on gods, totally zero.

Priests and others that spread this bs are enemy of mankind.. one fine day many of them will be jailed and or put in mental hospital.

  • Your lack of empathy is saddening, and your lack of understanding of the subject of neuroscience is apparent.

By claiming certainty you condone the claim of certainty by the religious.

You are half right, though; dogmatic certainty could perhaps result in treatment of some kind someday, which might include a stay in a mental hospital. Beware, lest you include yourself in the group you would see jailed or hospitalized, though.

  • actually, numbers are relative.

What if you were using a form of binary that went up to 2 but no higher. then 2+2 would be 20...

(If you don't know what i'm talking about then think of normal binary... 1+1 = 10 in binary...)

  • don't computers use the 1+1 = 10 ?

  • yeah.

  • and 2+1 = 30?:P

  • There is no such thing as 2+1 in binary. Asking a computer that question is like asking a rock what an elephant plus a kangaroo is

  • There are IO kind of peoples, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

    Anyway:

    2(10^0)+1(10^0)= 3[in our numerical system]=1(2^1)+1(2^0)=11[binary]

Both means the same numbers, 3[10]=I0[2]

So there is such a thing as 2+1, we write is as:

    IO+I=II

(I used letters to demonstrate the difference between the symbols in different numerical systems.)

  • 1(2^1)+1(2^0)=11

    In binary, there are no 2s, unless you mean [1(2^1)+1(2^0)] = [ 11 ]

    decimal system binary

or am i mixing things up. Anyway, if this is what you meant, then yeah. However, when I said there's no such thing as "2+1" i meant the number "2" not the representation of 2. As in, if you punched "2" into a code consisting of binary, it sinply wouldn't work

  • I'll see that I answered without context to your post. Well, YT's comment section is quite chaotic. Anyway: To your orginal claim:

    "actually, numbers are relative."

This is wrong, not numbers are relative only our symbols for numbers are.

Because we use "IO" and not "2" as a symbol for the number two, does not make the number any different.

    "I0"=="2"

The only difference is, that our computers can only compute in binary so it needs all the data in binary form.

  • And anyway, the computer doesn't know what "IO" means, we built the computer, so it counts the way we do. We as well could make a computer that counts "2+5=13", it just would not make any sense. This might clear up your "i meant number 2 not the representation"-statement. A number is an abstract thing, it's not real, but constructed by us.

  • We built the computer to use binary to save room in memory (It's easier to remember 2 numbers than 10) I'm simply talking about the confines of binary at the moment. In which "2" is an illogical number.

Put simply, I agree with all your points, but you are arguing against a case I never put forward.

  • What I'm trying to say is, although I may have put it across poorly, my argument still stands XD

  • Sorry, you still got it wrong. We use binary as two states are easier to display than ten. So we save symbols! Two are enough. In fact, by using binary we have to use more digits and thereby using more memory. We easily could define 10 states of electricity to represent our numerical system, but it would be much harder to implement.

Anyway, I still didn't get your case you put forward, so please, elaborate it a bit more. (You can PM me if 500 digits aren't enough :) )

  • I may be wrong about the memory, what you say makes sense.

he said "in binary we can make 2+1=30"

i pointed out he can't do that because you can't use the figure "2", or for that matter "3" but you see what i mean... it was just a quip... no desire to go into such depth in a field i dont really care about all that much :P

  • Ah, OK -- this is what I meant with YT-comment section being chaotic ^^ I rest my case.

  • I'll be happy even if they're Raptured away ;-)

  • Rapture...lol

how the f... can you belive in that ?

  • Easy!

    Just don't think.

  • why? then they would be right after all and the hellish god does exist. brrrr i wouldnt like it one bit

  • You're right of course.

If they were to be "Raptured away" then we're ALL screwed anyway.

In that case, Hell would be preferable.

  • the pangea thing was enlightening but, it kinda felt dragged on by the counting of the low denominations.

  • Great video. How can they work out what the earth looked like so long ago?

  • Geology is one of those subjects that I have never quite managed to be interested in, but this was a fascinating presentation. I loved hearing about how living organisms contribute so much to rock formation. It is almost like a continuation of biology, so see how formerly living things eventually become the classic example of a non-living thing.

  • Moronic.

Science, and scientists, are not concerned with gods.

Science is the study of nature and natural processes, not the supernatural.

As for uniformatarianism, you are incorrect once again.

Science has achieved quite a bit considering it was locked away by the church in the middle ages. Only during the Enlightenment did science come back from near death imposed by the church.

Theories are preferred over "god did it"!

  • @messiahjonz dude, imagine if the dark ages never happened..... we would have probably been way more advanced then we are now!

THANKS TO CHRISTIANITY, we got fucked over.. :( i'm glad you have a brain man

  • @messiahjonz science IS a religion now

  • @mcRioRemedy I wish silly irish potheads into hip hop understood science and religion. Now, I get it that you are looking for a few yucks online... but that comment was not even funny. If you truly believe your comment lay off the weed kid. If it was for a laugh... have another bowl.

  • @messiahjonz i understand science and religion better than you, judging by your comment.

i wasnt "looking for a few yucks" i was merely stating my opinion. science is like a religion now, scientists are the priests and ministers, whatever they say the followers believe, with blind faith. they say it, humans believe it.

tell me how im wrong. im clearly right, and you know it. not many people have access to the tools and equipment they do, so we ahve to take their word for most things. SIMPLES

  • @mcRioRemedy Kid, I will explain to you how you are incorrect, please follow along... Religion is opinion and concept, without evidences or truths required. Science on the otherhand requires evidences... thus peer review. As for your "understanding", I have an ordination and a scientific education... if you believe without evidence, "blind faith" as you put it, please never assume others do. Everyone has access to the tools required, if they choose not to use them that is their own fault.

  • @messiahjonz everyone has access to scanning electron microsopes? everyone has access to the nasa space station? everyone has access to cloning labs? you are talking shit my friend. you spout the same shit that you have been told, and read, the same as religion tells people stuff. you are the classic example of a fool. you are a sheep, the sort of person the illuminati love having on board, if you cant grasp the concept or the point i made that science is a religion then i feel sorry for you...

  • @mcRioRemedy Sadly you missed my points... that you need not be on the space station to peer review. Nor have access to an electron microscope, as I do, to peer review. Nor have access to cloning labs to peer review. The only shit here is between your ears. If you are too lazy to figure this out, as it is painfully obvious that it is, then continue spewing nonsense. You failed. Everyone has access to the internet, which allows for access to the tools required. Get an education kid.

  • @mcRioRemedy LOL... I cannot believe you brought up that illuminati bullshit... and you call me a fool? What a douche! I understand you when you say that science is a religion... you are simply incorrect. You just do not understand science, that is why you made such an asinine statement... based entirely on your misunderstanding of both science and religion. If you want to feel sorry for something... look in the mirror and start there. Stop listening to that crap music and pick up a book.

  • @messiahjonz lol, look at mr high and mighty. i am reading a book at the moment. big deal. i can listen to rap music too. your equating that because i listen to hip hop that i dont read. you really cant help showing yourself up can you, for the ignorant old fool that you are. access to the internet is no education old man. you clearly are intolerant to others and there beliefs and are therefor not even worth arguing with.

you live your life through youtube ...you are a simpleton with no brain.

  • @mcRioRemedy Thank you for not addressing the conversation and simply attacking me... I expected nothing less from you! As for the book you are reading... do you really think the Twilight series counts? lol. You comment on a topic that is more than a year old and I have no life? Thank you for proving my points for me. I never argue... I have discussions... children argue. Believe as you wish... be incorrect, that is your right to do so. Be well kid.

  • @mcRioRemedy You say "your equating..." the word that has escaped you is "you're", as in the contraction "you are"... not "your"... and you call me ignorant? Again... please, I beg of you, get an education... do not fear knowledge, bother to learn. Do not feel ashamed or embarrassed when you need to ask a question or for help. Listening to nonsense crap music is no way to go through life kid. Lay off the weed as well. I now understand your plight. I only wish you could. 1 word, EDUCATION!

  • @messiahjonz lol, every message you write you make yourself out to be an even bigger arsehole than before.

you are clearly insecure in life. i shall let you go on living in your fantasy world.

no wonder you have no real friends or a wife. enjoy your bubble. ignorance is bliss.

p.s.- this twilight series book is amazing. goodbye you sad old man

  • @messiahjonz Theories make things easier....The Truth is not easy..

  • @ZombieCrazy100 I completely disagree... the easiest thing to do is simply say... "god did it" and study nothing. Theories are a difficult process. Now, if you are claiming that theories are the truth... most are.

  • "Even more, all their thoughts have only one target: to eliminate GOD from our life.

What for? I guess it is to do anything without to give any explanation."

That isn't true. There are scientists of all religious faiths and cultures. The aim of science is to increase the collective knowledge of all mankind; not only for our curiosity, but to improve our lives.

  • Ignoring you terrible grammar for a second, most scientists don't give a wet one if you believe in God or if anyone else does. Some, such a s Dawkins and his ilk are very vocal but they are not representative of all scientists and all atheists, like Fred Phelps and his family are not representative of all Christians.

  • @jotape1960

    Radioactive reactions? Huh?

Read a science book before you say anything about science.

In the science book you will come to understand that "Theory" in science denotes the highest possible level of factual understanding of a phenomenon.

So the Theory of Gravity explains the fact of gravity. Cell Theory explains the fact that living things are composed of cells. The Theory of Evolution explains the fact of evolution.

Or is Gravity "just a theory"???

  • Your THEORIES about "GOD" are also something nobody can prove. But there is at least some evidence in this videos case.

  • I love this series. Thanks

  • Yay! ^^ I felt so smart watching this because I knew it already! I learned it in first year geology. The continent thing at the end was awesome too. I thought for sure Pangea was much more recent than 250mya. For some reason I thought it was 120mya... Oh well, guess I better get out my text book and check.

    Great vid! 5 stars!

  • Amazing series, thanks for posting!

anybody know the music from 3:35 to 5:40?

  • Beautiful video. The last part when you were showing how the earth changed, it would have been nice if you put the geological names in with the times. Nevertheless, it was still a wonderful video to watch.

  • :) an excellent summary of the earths history and the rock cycle. Wish the planet wasn't spinning tho during the last part.

  • Inspiring.

  • Awesome! But still, I can't hear the word magma without think of Dr. Evil.

  • Leekwid Mag Ma ^L^

  • I have that problem too, but with sharks.

  • ...but how did all that happen in just 6000 years?

    ::cough::

  • God is omnipotent; she can do anything she wants in any time span and even make it appear it took ~4.5 billion years!

    Duh!

  • Who or what is God. Kinda stupid to make such bold claims about some fantasy figure you can not even prove exist.

  • No, it's not stupid to be facetious. It just doesn't come across well in text.

Also, there's nothing logically wrong with the claim that an omnipotent being could have created the universe five minutes ago and also created the illusion that it's around 4.5 billion years old (including your memory of events more than five minutes ago).

The problem with it is that it doesn't point to any particular omnipotent being, other than one that is intentionally deceptive.

  • Ahem. The universe is some 15 billion years old. Doesn't change the argument, but I figured I'd point out my error.

    :)

  • @TheCuriousSkeptic it's not 6000, its 600mln or bln....but certainly not 6000 ;D

  • @TheCuriousSkeptic where in the bible does it say that the earth was created in 6000 years? do u seriously think that the 6 days are 1000 years per day?

  • @jesusloves53 Do you realize how stupid that question is? Even if I thought that one Genesis day = 1000 years (I don't), Jesus was born over 2000 years ago. Now we're already at 8000, plus all the years between Adam and Jesus. FYI, the 6000 year old earth was derived by biblical scholars who believe in the literal interpretation of Genesis of 6x24 hour days. lol Are you seriously trying to tell me you've never heard about Creationists and their 6000 year old Earth?

  • awesome

  • This semester I took geology, and this vid resumes it very well, yey , :)

  • This series gets better and better. Thanks.

  • Awesome!

  • I'm sorry I love these vids but the last 4 MINUTES of the the video were slooooow. There was no need for that. A ticker in the corner and a 20 second animation would have sufficed.

  • Yeah, it was slow, but you can look at that has helping you have a little better appreciation of these times scales.

What if had taken 4 hours to watch and not 4 minutes? 4 months? 4 million years would still be way way faster than the actual time.

I like these things to move slowly to enhance intuitive appreciation.

  • That was a really really really cool video! <3 loved it!

  • I belive they are going about same speed or faster it's just we don't relly feel it unless thier are mayor areas were they seem to be more acitve and those are earth quakes.I can only rember so much so feel free to correct me.Also i kinda give up talking to creatnist about this they can say this is prove god likes to play with earth land mass lol. Men they make me have headaces when they pull carzy shit out there asses to explain scientific discoveries.

  • You didn't know that every scientific discovery validates god or is a conspiracy against religion?

    hehehehe

  • Look at Panthalassa. It's huge.

  • I can see some idiot creationist making a fuss as soon as the narrator saying "4 billion years ago".

    PS

It's the same narrator in every video; who is it?

  • they just immediately start flipping out

  • 1:35 Stone Mountain in GA! I climbed that in the fifth grade:) very informative vid i love this channel:)

  • Go to their website at cassopeiaproject dt org, and read the background story they use to tie it all together.

  • Now I understand why the characters kept calling "Jeeves" in the Relativity series, but I fail to understand the story itself...

  • It's just a science fiction story to tie together the various episodes and give the whole reason to be. Not necessary to understanding the information, of course, but it does explain the characters when they pop up in places.

  • I see.

I suppose this is the reason for the floating metal head in "Weirdness of Quantum Mechanics"?

  • Yes. There's the male and female "students" Kevin and Diana and their guide Chaucer. They all meet as avatars within the computer who provides the informational voice-overs, Jeeves. It is all just a fictional background on which to hang all the tutorial postings that Cassiopeia does. I thought it was a bit hokey when I first picked it up, but it works, and gives a little humanity to the lessons. Jeeves voice is very good for he exposition stuff.

  • I will not even try to understand...

  • Anyone know if the plate tektonics have reduced in speed? I know it's still going on, but not very fast. Are there any suggestions of how the world will look like in a 100 million years or so?

    Great vid BoS.

  • I have no I dea but after a while country's will hit each other right o.O

  • No. They all run at speeds determined by he dynamics below. The movement of India traveling from near the south pole to crash into Asia has been described as "breakneck", which means about 20 cm/yr.

  • Very interesting! 5/5

  • Fantastic !!!

    * * * * *

  • I think that if we assume the moon is something we picked up, as in an asteroid that struck us, knocked off a bunch of stuff, and then stuck around in orbit, that it may be the reason why the continents were all once one. To me, that's the only thing that makes sense. Why else would the Earth's land masses be so unevenly distributed? I'm sure there may be other reasons, but that's one hypothesis.

  • Hmm... interesting. That is plausible but unlikely because a small planet(not asteroid) would push down the land so the massive continent pangea had to of formed millions of years after we got our moon. The only way to know for sure if that planet did it or not is to examine other planets like earth(without a moon) to see if there are tectonic plates shifting.

  • Now comes the challenging part: Find a planet like Earth without a moon and get close enough to it to observe tectonic plates. Easy enough...

Oh wait, we have a 2,000 year handicap. Damn.

  • Or to study this planet more, and run some calculations.

  • Well, well... the moon is believed to have formed more than 4 billion years ago and the dissolution of pangea only took place in the last 500 mil. years (we're talking about the phanerozoic period). The earth's continents have pobably been united and separated a couple of times by now.

Had an asteroid so large hit the Earth so recently, life probably would have disappeared anyway. It would have to be the size of a small planet to "knock off so much stuff". Yet we've got large animals soon afer.

  • I'm not saying that it hit at the exact moment that pangea existed, because obviously we had animals roaming around at the time. I would like to see what the scientists believe the earth was like before pangea. That would likely disprove my hypothesis. All I'm saying is that I think it would be interesting if we found that this was the case, that all the above-ocean land being on one side of the planet was a remnant of the impact that formed our moon.

  • Geologists are pretty sure that before Pangaea (around 250 mya) came together and broke apart there would have been other supercontinents, the most recent of which would have been Rodinia.

Even if that wouldn't be true, you would still have to account for a 4.3 billion year gap between the forming of the moon and Pangaea.

Also, the collision which would have formed the moon would have melted the earth's crust completely, leaving little or no traces of any pattern you described.

  • Terrific.. I love your videos.

  • Awesome video!

  • Last part could have been sped up a bit.. But otherwise great video!

  • I am constantly amazed at the content in your videos. Keep it up!

  • nooo its fake the God create world and moon is made off green cheese

  • Awesome!

    5 Stars!

    Thank you for posting this.

    All the best to you.

    Have a great weekend.
