I frequently have the same thoughts as you. The former Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor caused an outcry with his remarks that "one cannot be fully human unless one seeks the transcendence, i.e. God". I was amused by it because I think I am fully human but do not believe in a god. Enjoyment in nature, the stars, mountains etc. as well as art and music make us human. I like your inclusion of the Chauvet cave horses.
Hi ExF. : ) I just wanted to hint at my own honest, view of the "purpose" of life. I think all that we strive to be or achieve in the outer world of the 5-senses will evaporate and disappear one day. Like building castles of sand. But I think we are given an opportunity to meditate and try to raise our consciousness in meditation. To transcend the physical world. To break out of the cycle of reincarnation. Everything else we try to achieve or do fades into nothingness with time. Ok, bye! Bri.
@LoveMattersMost Hi Bri! That's very interesting, and I agree that we meditate to raise consciousness & transcend the physical world. I don't know enough about reincarnation or the laws or rules regarding that, so I can't say whether I believe in it or not. As for whether we all eventually become "nothing", I once asked my husband whether we'll be together forever after death, and his reply was "Yes, because information does not disintegrate." And that idea struck a chord with me.
@EmeraldxFairy Hi. Well, your husband's comment was unique. It is a very sophisticated view. He is clearly a scientist to think of metaphysics in terms of physics (information and entropy). I like the idea of continuity after death. It sounds romantic to me. : )
@LoveMattersMost Thank you Bri. Personally, I know very little about physics so I had no idea what he meant by that at first, hah. :) Most other people I know would probably have no idea either, but I knew you would appreciate it.
-cont- The best of the dog group may be better than the worst of the human group!
So here is my explaination: All life is the same, but each is working with a better/worse brain and body. So the question of what is a human? Is really a case of artificial categories based on the bodies. It's really the spirit and how the spirit acts, behaves and creates, that matters. But of course, the human body has the best brain, so we assume it is always the top of the creation. Brian. : )
@LoveMattersMost Wow. That is incredible. I don't even know how to respond to that, much less where to begin. You've given me something to think about. Thank you. :)
@EmeraldxFairy Hi ExF! : ) Sorry for the slow reply..the real world got in the way. Haha. But I'm back playing on YouTube again. Yes, this video was a completely unexpected treat for me. The reason being, as I watched your wonderfully diverse photos, and I listened to your voice thinking out loud, I was captivated by the experience because it was like being in my own Head, listening to my own thoughts! (although the voice was unnervingly feminine! haha). We have asked the same questions! : )
@LoveMattersMost Hi Bri! I should be the one to apologize about slow replies. I completely missed your last two comments on this page, so here I am, replying back a whole week later.
You know what's interesting? I get that same experience when I talk to other idealists especially, or when I listen to an idealist talk about something that interests them, regardless of whether they are male or female.
Here is a interesting slant on the question of being Human: What if all life is the same stuff? But it has a better or worse body to work with? In other words, the life in dogs, people, and carrots is the same life. But when it is in a human body, it is much smarter than when it is a carrot. Does that make sense? And within each body type there are "spirits" on either end of the bell curve in terms of vitues, intelligence, creativity, etc. So isn't it possible that there is some overlap? -cont-
"What does it mean to be Human?" -One of the greatest single questions that can be asked! The follow up question is no less profound-What is the meaning or purpose of life? Somehow, I think the two must be intimately connected. Thank-You, ExF, for "tickling our brains". Bri.
@LoveMattersMost Now that you mention about the question of the meaning or purpose in life and its connection, I wholeheartedly agree! Those are the two great questions of my entire life too!
Dear ExF, what a glowing, thoughtful, rich and interesting video! You had my attention from beginning to end. I thought your questions were very challenging and interesting. I love the comparisons you made with animal/human virtue. And I agree. Some dogs seem more loyal and trustworthy than some humans. My Favorite transition was to ask if Creativity and appreciation of Art defines us as human. I tend to lean this way. Certainly Jane Goodall's Chimp studies show how "human" they are. Bri : )
@LoveMattersMost Hi Bri! Thank you for your input about this topic. I am glad to know you enjoyed this video! I agree, I notice those virtues in some dogs too. It seems that such virtues are more noticeable in certain species over others - what comes to my mind are dolphins, dogs, cats, crows, ravens, and primates - although, I don't know enough about other species. And in the case of love and compassion, it seems that some animals are just born with it,without having to be taught what it is.
Hey good to see you made a video. I see Tumblr hasn't completely distracted you. You made a great video and brought up some great questions. And I think the questions in this case, are more important than the answers.
Some of the things that humans champion, is found in the animal kingdom. Like procreation, protecting the children, "child" abuse, and murder.
I would say animals are also capable of compassion as well. And some "humans" lack compassion in a psychopathic sense especially.
@TheFaustianMan Thank you for your comments Faust! I have to say, Tumblr both distracts me and also fuels my brain, and I certainly go through a whole spectrum of emotions and thoughts when looking at some of the posts that go on there.
And actually, browsing that site is sort of what sparked me to do this video in the first place, and helped me to mold and form such questions. (cont.)
(cont.) Yes indeed, there are some animals who have the compassion and intuition which some, or shall I say, many, people lack. I agree about some of these questions being more important than the answers, and I think other questions will probably never be fully answered anytime during my lifetime it ever there is an answer.
I think at some point, every thoughtful person asks him or herself: Does anything really matter? Why? because the cause and effect of all our actions is not immediately visible to us. As some point everyone asks, "Does anything really matter?" Play Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," to get the feeling behind this comment. And that song was such a hit I believe, because it "resonated" with so many people, like us. : ) Brian.
@LoveMattersMost It may be so - some, more than others. I tend to think that most people will not stop to think of such questions because it makes them uncomfortable, especially since it makes them look at their daily life, which they would rather not examine so closely.
