The first time I saw Hedwig I was really offended because I thought it was making fun of heteros, but I gave it a chance and watched it anyway. I went from really offended to totally amazed! This movie actually had me crying at the end, because even though I am a straight male, I know how horrible it is to feel incomplete, like some part of yourself is missing. This scene, and the following where Hedwig's tattoo becomes whole, was what really got to me!
I agree with everyone who says that you can relate to this movie no matter who you are. I'm a straight female and I feel like this is such a deep movie for me. I think everyone can relate to how Hedwig feels, obviously not certain situations but the way she feels and just the kind of journey of wanting to kind of "fit in". This is one of my favourite movies of all time and originally only watched it because of Michael Pitt and had no idea what to expect.
The Tommy's version of the song hits the mark when it came to Hedwig finally understanding reality as it is, not his roundabout approach to his situation in the story. Sometimes you can't blame all the things in life, you just have to go thru it and move on just like Tommy. This movie when I first saw it spoke volumes to me as well as many others. Excellent storyline, music and movie. A Top Five in my Book..
this part makes me cry every time i watch it :( so beautiful. i just felt bad cause i wish the movie didn't have an ending just go on and on. i'd watch it till the very end and still love it.
@hedwiglover13 yeah I know it was Stephen Trask, what I was saying was that I wish they had let Michael sing it, he has a wonderful voice, & would have sung it well.
The same way Hedwig "completed" Tommy when she put the silver cross on his forehead, Tommy completes her now. We need others to lead us to our completion, not to become dependent on them for it.
He stops lip synching and he whispers "goodbye" even though Hedwig gave all to him, he cannot love her so called imperfection, he looks at her, he knows he took what he needed from her so he merely says "goodbye"
Hahaha its so weird because I never ever thought I would get into a movie like this but you are correct sir that might be one of the best moments of the movie !
i think what's great about this song is that so many can find themselves in it, whether their issues center around gender, race, or just being a lonely kid dying to escape their own "wicked little town." :)
When I heard " 'Cause with all the changes you've been through, it seems the stranger's always you." I had this sort of self-realization moment and started crying. It's incredibly rare for me to hear a song that invokes that in me.
I think that's what makes this movie so good. There's at least one part of the story, maybe a verse or two in one of the songs that everyone can relate to in some way.
Beautiful movie, and this is my new favorite song of all time.
@switchbladejane This song and this scene in particular always makes me cry. I feel that in this scene he's face to face with who he thought was his other half. He's saying his final goodbye....he then becomes whole because he realizes his "other half" was within himself and all he needed all along was himself. Just my view of the scene.
This "alter ego" sequence of the film can be interpreted in many ways to many different people if you think about it. It's almost philosophical. I'm married. I'm straight. I'm Asian. And I'm MUCH older than these characters in the film. But this scene always gets the waterworks going for me without fail.
Stephen Trask wrote ALL the songs on the soundtrack, btw. What a talented singer songwriter he is!! :)
@TiramisuHappy Thanks Tiramisu. I agree with you. I'm a straight female too, but can relate to this song / situation feeling. It doesn't seem to matter / straight or gay / male or female / this scene evokes strong feelings in everyone. Everyone seems to cry at this scene. It's amazing.
Huh, I just noticed how near the end, when it pans out on Hedwig, the black shorts seem to split her in two, kind of symbolizing how Tommy's goodbye had seperated her from her other half.
I am slightly homophobic. I watch gay and lesbian movies (because i love movies) and often feel unimpressed. They always seem out to yell out "i'm gay! you suck!" And the movie started out like that. Plus it was too artsy for my tastes.
But...after half an hour, I realized the sheer genius and imagery of this movie. Awesome music, incredible backstory, well done and put together. I can honestly say that I'd watch this movie again.
I am a huge fan of this movie. I do not connect with it as a between genders issue, but much deeper for me. I am a Native American. I was the only one in my family as I had a different father, that I have no idea about. I truly tried to fit in and be white my whole life, but having the wrong skin tone did not help me. It wasn't until eleven years ago, when i was thirty years old, or so, that I decided to accept the fact that i am in fact Ojibwe and there is nothing wrong with that.
I am glad you shared that. even though it was a difficult part of your life , it is really cool to let every one who may be going through simular situations that it doesn't have to destroy them. It is a ggod story of hope and self awareness.
wow your such a inspiration... az a hawaiian, maori boi.. i had the same thing happen to me...
ps: i went to sacramento 2weekz ago for the National Indian And Native American Employment And Training Conference... and i it waz kool... i met some awsome bird singerz... and i found out i have Native Indian blood too... but yeah... take care... Ka kite ano.. ====Storm===
@brokl26 "I do not connect with it as a between genders issue, but much deeper for me." Wait, wait, so... Race surpasses gender issues? :| You're kidding me right?
@brokl26 Self-discovery is a painful and terribly beautiful thing. As long as people stumble in the dark trying to find themselves, this movie will speak to us. <3
I studied the musical and the film in my english class this year and my prof is a very good prof. But somehow, I just didn't connect to it right away. After watching the movie again (I have to write a paper on it) and coming on youtube to watch the videos, I started to become a fan and I think it has something to do with all of your comments. Wicked Little Town is an amazing song, especially this reprise. Theres just so much to read into.. impossible to fit in a comment.
I always loved this version because sometimes I feel this way in the song. I am not exactly in the same boat as Hedwig, but I know what it is like to be stuck within genders, and I feel for this song so much.
'cause of all the changes you've been through, seems the strangers always you,in some wicked little town. man,how true for so many of us! i cried for the recognition of myself in this. great lyrics!
this vid is very moving... i accidentally saw it on digi cable when i was getting FREE month of like showtime or something. changed me 180 degrees, opened my mind and heart...
I'll never forget sitting in my friends living room in Seattle and crying my eyes out at how beautiful this movie was. I changed that day. I saw the play in OKC and the actors came up to me afterward, amazed I knew every word. Hedwig is in my heart and soul forever. I even showed it to my kids who love it too....♥♥♥♥
there's nothing better than a movie that touches every part of the soul...It's been a while since I've seen a movie this good...and if i ever get a chance to see the play...i'm going to jump at it...
This film changed my life. It changed the way I see nearly everything. It changed my way of thinking. It changed me. It took over my heart and it will never leave me. It is part of me and I am indescribably, forever grateful to John for sharing his beautiful mind and amazing talent with us. Stephen Trask deserves otherworldly praise for his songwriting as well. This is the ultimate film. <3
my heart stopped when I saw this movie for the first time. Seems silly, it is just a movie, but it touched me so deeply I can hardly think of anything else that makes me feel so lonely as this, but in a great way...
personally I think that there are multiple people that could serve as a soul mate...the soul isn't bound to a physical shape like a puzzle piece...it's power lies in connections...and when two people are connected in the same way...that is how a soul mate is found...
Right when Tommy mouthes the word "Goodbye" thats when the tears that have been built up in my eyes start to stream down my face. This movie means alot to me and I feel that everyone, EVERYone can relate to it in some way. gay or straight or bi or tran, whatever religion, politic, race....everyone knows what its like to want to be loved...and to find yourself....and to finally..finally let go...
This song is an apology, but it's also saying that the only thing holding you back from happiness is yourself. Tommy is saying that Hedwig's greatest gift is to make something beautiful and true from things that are broken...and that's the whole meaning of the movie. Look up the lyrics to both songs and read them. Tommy's version at the end isn't a rip-off. It's an answer.
That's not true, Hedwig thought Tommy was her other half, and she could not forgive him abandoning her. This isn't the exact same song that Hedwig sang (although it is remarkably similar), it's just his way of saying "goodbye"
did JCM once say in an interview that Hedwig and tommy gnosis are essentially the same person. Because i thought this symbolized that Hedwig was realizing who he/she actually was, and that he didnt need all that makeup and glam to be happy...and thats why he gives Yitzhak his wig in Midnight Radio. Im not sure. If someone can clear this up for me, send me a message.
Wait a minuten, he tells Hedwig to follow his voice out of this wicked little town....so then....it's not the end for them? In the last scene, Hedwig is nude walking towards the street, and disappears, did they then become one? (as in the song the origins of love?)
I love a happy ending!

It's actually too tragic for words. It's the "ahhhhh" bit around 1:50, I think, that gets me.

Right when Tommy mouthes the word "Goodbye" thats when the tears that have been built up in my eyes start to stream down my face. This movie means alot to me and I feel that everyone, EVERYone can relate to it in some way. gay or straight or bi or tran, whatever religion, politic, race....everyone knows what its like to want to be loved...and to find yourself....and to finally..finally let go...

ain't that the truth!!

It's an answer.

to me it seems like tommy is giving a big f-u to hedwig... kinda made me cry abit. nevertheless whatever it is its touching :-D
Turner005 4 years ago
That's not true, Hedwig thought Tommy was her other half, and she could not forgive him abandoning her. This isn't the exact same song that Hedwig sang (although it is remarkably similar), it's just his way of saying "goodbye"

What an incredible fucking movie! I love it. What a powerful scene.

did JCM once say in an interview that Hedwig and tommy gnosis are essentially the same person.

"And there's no mystical design,
No cosmic lover preassigned.
There's nothing you can find
that can not be found."
Hedwig realizes this and becomes whole all by himself
