Dude. Love the detail put into the Uke and the vid, especially as you say you had to Google a few chords to give it a test run! Classic. Sounds sweet. I'm rigging one up for sure. Anything you usually play on the top (bottom) four strings of guitar will translate directly to Uke but in a different key.
The author of this video was looking for new members for his cool club so he thought he'd pick out the ones with the ingenosity of searching for 'electric ukelele' on Youtube.
And since he created one of those himself, he's the boss of this club.
@ShiftySquirrel use of a bandsaw is very time saving to cut the body curves out , probably a jigsaw with suitably thin blade would do . otherwise a good selection of sandpapers and a drill
that looks amazing :O I'm planning to make my own ukulele, but have no idea which electrics to buy, please could you give me some obviously expert advice??
@samsbananas1066 i used guitar parts for electrics . the pickup is a telecaster neck pickup ( or copy ) and if you go on the seymour duncan wiring diagram site under the heading single pickup one volume you will find the wiring plan .
@MrAwesomeAnimation i put together a few guitars previously and had pickups and machineheads left from those . i took a rubbing / tracing from my cousins ukulele neck and the distance from the nut to the bridge , and worked from that . the overall shape was from a lot of doodling
@megablade12345 thanks . it was from a sketch i did for a proposed guitar . i had a couple of nice pieces of wood that were too small for the guitar , and wanted to try making a neck from scratch , so i built this
@PyramidHead11000 the wiring is from the seymour duncan pickup wiring diagram site , under single pickup one volume , the pickup is a telecaster type neck pickup
@PyramidHead11000 yes just the same . i would probably get a neck to start with . the uke is o.k without a truss rod in the neck but a guitar needs one for metal strings
I'd much rather see an instrument made from recycled materials than add to the demand for tropical rain forest timber !!
Besides, it gives it character.
I just made an electric guitar using a toilet seat and an old Fender Strat neck my mate got me at the bootfair for £2 !! and I have to say, I'm rather chuffed with it.
@longliverock1996 i got the fretwire from e bay . it was guitar type . just make sure its a reasonably low type ( or better still ukulele fret wire ) a single length was just enough . a flying v would be easier . all straight cuts and then the points rounded off slightly . the neck pocket is the trickiest bit . the only way to avoid routing or chiselling it out , would be to make the body out of two slabs of wood the top one having the cut out , the bottom left as the base of the pocket
@MrOhWhatTheHeck i had the pickup from a telecaster which i had replaced with a humbucker . you would get a tele neck pickup off e bay . i worked on the uke for about three weeks a few hours a day . if i had used a neck from a second hand instrument , the build time would have been a lot less
@BLOODELFSRULE i had a rummage through my wood store recently and found some sapele red wood . there would be enough to make a uke , but i,m thinking more a violin shape with a metal mesh front . just a thought at the moment though
@marie0cartwright .... i,m not sure if thats a comment on my playing .... but theres two people playing the ukulele if you look under danny harvey ukulele and on canarycreek channel skip is playing it through a mico cube
@DoctorOrion1 i borrowed my cousins ukulele and took a rubbing / tracing of the neck , frets and bridge all on one piece of paper , so i could get the proportions right
@sanman312 i would buy a second hand ukulele with a decent neck , take a rubbing or tracing of the top of it so you know where the bridge needs to be in relation to the neck . take the neck off ansd use that as the basis of the electric one
@RicJak1234567 thanks , i usually work with guitars , so it may be a while till i get around to another ....unless i find some interesting materials that would suit a uke rather than guitar
@sanman312 avoid pithy wood or fibre board for the body . pine is easy to shape and sounds good , but is easily dented . i think ash and poplar are good too , and if batons of timber are all thats available , glue them together till you have the width you need . lay the neck on a sheet of paper and mark where the bridge will be , and sketch some shapes till you find something you like . with electric instruments the shape wont really affect the sound
@sanman312 any guitar pickup should work if you put it at an angle so all the polepieces are under the strings . the only reason i used a telecaster neck pickup is that the chrome cover looked right to me
@isaacwilk the wiring is from the seymour duncan pickup wiring diagram site , under single pickup one volume , the pickup is a telecaster type neck pickup
Ive made an electric ukulele of my own and Ive pretty much finished it but ive got one problem, i bought the only metal strings that i could find and they are tuned to EBGD so they sound really dodgey tuned to GCEA, do you know where i could get some ones that work or how to tune the ones that ive got properly? Thanks.
@animeMonkey808 i got my volume pot and jack socket from e bay .... standard guitar parts . i had a telecaster neck pickup in my bits box but i,m sure you,d get a fender squier one from the same place
@GuitarsBlood i,m finding where to put the spindle of the machine head/tuner by taking a line from where the string will be on the neck and taking it through onto the headstock
@GuitarsBlood i used aluminium sheet to shield the electrics cavities against outside interferance . self adhesive copper is available for this , and if you do it , it should be wired to the earth of the control circuit . many guitars are not fully shielded
Wow, this has inspired me to try and make my own electric uke :D I was just wondering if anyone knows what pickup that is or where to buy a similar one?
@MarksArt123 its a telecaster neck pickup . there are six polepieces under the chrome cover , but if its angled under the four uke strings theres a strong even coverage
@neonpike Thanks for the reply, just one more question, if i buy one what else do I need for the electronics, for example the knob and the output jack?
@MarksArt123 you would need a guitar volume pot and a guitar jack socket , both available from e bay or electric guitar spares shops . for a circuit diagram look on seymour duncan pickup diagram site . single pickup circuit one volume no tone
@RnDnproductions i was given the wood for the neck and body some time ago , and the pickup was in my parts box ,so i bought the fret wire vol pot and jack socket
@kingkumber the wiring diagram is same as a single pickup guitar ... i think its on the seymour duncan pickup diagram site . the pickup is a telecaster neck pickup , raked at an angle to put all the pole pieces within the influence of the strings
@canarycreek You bought this uke from him? Are the strings steel? Are the tuners handcrafted? How much did you pay for it? Any answers would be much appreciated. It's a beautiful little thing.
oh that's great!! think I'm gonna get the black les paul model...it's gorgeous....not as much as the one from this video but it looks great too, thank you
@Andylikestofunk if you look around on ebay you can find alot of completely electric ukes for about 100-200 dollars just look around plus amazon is selling a blue electric uke that i have had my eye on for the past month
@kyreks4 i do sell instruments as well as other things i make , so its partly commercial . but i tend to make the stuff that inerests me rather than building to sell . as for the best start , i would say buy a good neck and a bridge , and play with shapes . i avoid making whats already out there . theres already plenty of conventional , shiny well made instruments . look at videos where people are working with the same equipment as you have available
@kyreks4 i learned a few chords after i built the uke , and found it very rewarding to use . the instrument now lives in america , if you look on canarycreek its new owner has videos of him playing through a roland micro cube .
can you send me some sort of a more detailed way to do this including wood sizes, sandpaper grains, what tools, and so on. im desperately trying to create one out of scrap wood at my house but im new to this stuff
@mistermen440 i didnt work to any plans , or keep a record of what i did . the only bit that was standard was the neck , and i got the measurements for that from a borrowed uke . sorry
hey man i'm trying to make my uke with metal strings ... what type of strings and what tuning were the strings? --Please post back on my channel ;) nice Job
@mugwaii321 there are some fretboard plans on google .. or lay a piece of paper on the fretboard of a borrowed ukulele and rub over it in one stroke with charcoal or a soft pencil

Hi, did you just use normal electric guitar strings, and just put them in a ukulele sequence?
samsbananas1066 2 months ago
Absolutely outstanding! You seem to have used mostly hand tools and patience. Did you use any specialist tools?
I'm hoping to attempt a build of my own at some point soon, so if you can recommend any "must have" tools that would be great.
Thanks for sharing your video.
