This was the first song to define rock guitar as its own style. It wasn't based on blues, folk, jazz or country. It was purely rock. From this point forward, EVERY guitarist either wanted to capture that element or avoid it.
@bondhughbond That would be Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & the Comets in 1952. That was the first mainstream success of modern Rock & Roll. The guitar solo in that song is pretty sweet.

THIS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WAS MADE IN 1966, WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME...ADD SOME DISTORTION TO IT AND YOU HAVE ONE OF THE HEAVIEST SOUNDS IN MUSIC HISTORY.
@tstmhd Actually no. You'd have to go back a decade for that and cross the pond. Anyway, this is generally called Brit Pop. Was at the time and still is today.Rock 'n Roll began as a melding together of country, urbanized blues and jazz. All of these are original American genres. It began that way and for the greater part remains that way today.
@p7scordova You really think that a shitty generic indie band did better at one of the most influential songs in history? Take your crap elsewhere. Long live the oldies!
------When i was a teenager i thought part of the lyrics were---( girl you got me so i cant see black night) - --in my band im going to put that in there----------
@bollpwnbay We have about as much control over our country as you have over yours. The People don't call the shots here, all that "by the people for the people" is bullshit. Just like all these seedy commy countries if you talk too loud and make too much noise you may go bye bye.We shoot our peace college protestors here. Why, we even shoot at our vets(ww1 MacArthur the 1932 "bonus march") that protest for better benefits! It's a evil human nature that gravitates towards power.
@HammerFist1970 Human nature is not evil. Evil stems from cowardice and the denial of nature. If you want to be an idealist, that's fine. If you want to push your notions of the ideal on other people, re-read my second sentence above. You are entirely correct if you see that it doesn't matter what somebody names the local social order. From one end of this world to the other and from one epoch to another, the situation is nearly exactly the same.
@PantherCamaro i know you are just making a joke/comment, but i hate it when people say this. You can be like me, enjoy the music from back then and the music now. if anything i would rather be born in the future where great artists like this exist and many more :)
@rdsnuke Ill tell you what happened, everyone smoked pot, most bands did LSD and other psychadelic drugs, these drugs open your mind up and you start to think differently:) So all of these bands were basically breaking free from the system and going nuts!
@hartland20lacrosse It's actually much easier to play in that position. Lower than the waist is awkward, I think. You have to kinda bend over to reach the neck properly. Although I don't quite have it as high as them, I only have my guitar just above the waist.
Yeah... the 60's. I hear the music, I see the jungle and I smell the napalm..... when it was all over, it was EUPHORIA... that's what I'm talking about: The freedom after Vietnam.... to do what you wanted to do inpeace and listen to ALL that great music!!
@thephilster57, there was no "after Vietnam" in the 60's. Vietnam ran until the end of the decade and into the 1970's. So your illusion about peace in a decade when 4 important leaders in the US were assassinated - JFK, Robert Kennedy, MLK, and Malcolm X - not to mention the various racial killings and police brutality as well as war atrocities by Americans and Vietnamese alike, is BS fueled by the media. Liking the music from a decade doesn't justify sugar-coating history
@KnowYourReps I agree with all your comments except one thing....the world could have done better without the like of another domestic racial terrorist like malcom X. He was just as bad as any other racist leader in history. White, Black, Brown, Yellow or red he was still a racist and a man who encouraged violence
@thephilster57 It didn't really plan out though did it man. Pot is still illegal. Governments are still as corrupt as ever. Peace and love is wonderful message but it seems to me that it didn't really do squat except perhaps bring the message to a wider conciousness.
Maybe in 20-30 years people will be citing the 60's as an early influence for a then more eco-concious world. But who knows?
The Kinks could have been a big part of the UK invasion of America if they had not been banned from US venues for messing with the AFTRA union in the mid-sixties. That cost them millions.
That is myth about Jimmy Page being involved with this song. They just don't want to give Dave Davies full credit for using a distorted guitar and creating one of the first heavy metal/punk songs.
