From what I have heard is Dick Allen had a mind of his own, which the white establishment didn't particularly care for,so he got this malcontent label.I have heard how much guys like Mike Schmidt and his other teammates liked him and his loosey goosey influence on the clubhouse. He should be in the hall according to a lot of people.
That was one hell of a home run, but I think it is always a dick move to just walk and watch it go-- especially if you're like Reggie and hit monster shots all the time. You should always run out that ball; that's the way the game was meant to be played.
@Coastergeekperson04 You know, I agree and disagree with you and here's why. I played ball in high school, and I remember the longest ball I hit was 416 ft, and I'm not gonna lie, I admired the shot, not to show up the pitcher, but because I didn't know I could hit a ball that far!
@Coastergeekperson04: You're silly. Reggie was twenty five at the time, and had not yet grown into the Mr. October legend who hit them like that "all the time."
Well, he should talk to Allen's former coaches and teammates because they all speak very fondly of him. Allen didn't do drugs, was never involved in domestic b.s., never was arrested, was very articulate, and polite. He was a free spirit who smoked before and after the games, and was a very sharp dresser. His only crime was 1. Outspoken 2. Well spoken 3. Didn't take shit off of people. 4.Free spirit and 5. Stylish and hip.
@publicatdamagnificen How a person with poor eyesight could hit home runs like he did is beyond me. And it is too bad he bounced around from team to team. Had he spent his entire career in, say, Detroit or St. Louis, I think Dick's numbers would have been better and he probably would have played on a few WS championship teams.
@rayjr62 I grew up in Detroit and pops regularly took us to Tiger games. I guarantee that if Dick Allen played in Tiger Stadium, it would've probably added an additional 10 homeruns a year to his total. He used to reach the deep upper deck centerfied bleachers (above the 440 foot) sign in batting practice like it was nothing. He came very close to hitting the scoreboard (560 feet) on several occasions!
@publicatdamagnificen Allen was a great player, and the bottom line (to me) was that he was mis-treated by the Phillies. Dick Allen was a special player, and you are supposed to take care of special players, not scapegoat them. The Phillies simply did not know how to deal with a player of Allen's caliber. Like I said, had he played for an organization that knew what they were doing, the story of Dick Allen's career would have been a whole lot different.
@rayjr62 You're totally right! I think it was a combination of three things: 1. Racist fans of Philly who turned on him when he defended himself against Frank Thomas who attacked him with a baseball bat. 2. Philly press were brutally hateful towards him. 3. Phillies management didn't try to assist him, and for good measure I'll throw in Mr Dumbass (Gene Mauch) who threatened Allen and his teamates not to tell the whole story of his fistfight.
@publicatdamagnificen Frank Thomas was a racist bully who frewuently made racist comments. He was so hateful that even the white players couldn't stand him
Frank Thomas swung his bat at Allen's head at batting pracitce. Allen ducked, was hit in the shoulder, and the team broke it up. Thomas was traded and told his side of the story. Mauch wouldn't let others talk about it, and the Philly fans looked at Allen "costing a white man his job' because they only heard Thomas side of the fight!
@publicatdamagnificen Very true. Up to the point of that injury, Allen was hitting triple-crown level stats. To show what a team player he was; knowing how important his bat was in the line-up, Allen refused to sit out and heal. That injury plagued him, along with others, for the rest of his career.
@lemaxmas You know, I forgot about him refusing to sit out! I agree that injury didn't heal properly, we can only imagine how fat his numbers would've been. Funny thing: Jim Nothrup ('68 Tigers died recently), in his last interview, the reporter mentioned the Gene Mauch. Jim just rolled his eyes and called him "Mr Know-it-all". He had the utmost contempt for him. I still don't see why he wouldn't let the players tell the whole truth about Frank Thomas- Made no damn sense!!
@publicatdamagnificen I think the team owners were afraid of the controversy & that Stewart taunting an African American player that Dick Allen tried to defend- they were worried about how it made them look or whatever backlash it might stir. Philly overall had a rep then among athletes as a racist city. The further irony being part of the reason why Curt Flood did not want to go to Philly when he was traded. I think they were happy to have the axe fall on Allen as a lame way to keep him down.
@lemaxmas Maybe too Mauch did not like the fact that it would make him look like he had no control over the team. Mauch always seemed to be a bridesmaid when it came to winning pennants, What Northrup said, might be exactly why the team collapsed the way it did in 64 and never really contended at all after that while Mauch was there.
@lemaxmas Hmm, that's an interesting perspective. It's no telling how long the bullying had gone on, and maybe they thought it would start a race riot or whatever. As far as "keeping him down", I agree with you on that one. Curt Flood? Dude turned down $ 90,000 a year in 1969 because he feared going to Philly. I just looked it up: $90,000 in '69 is the equivalent of $600,000 now- So you know Philadelphia must've been a hellish place for a black athlete!!
@publicatdamagnificen Dick Allen was one of the strongest players in the baseball history according to what I've heard from older White Sox fans than myself. The older fans say he had ungodly strength.
@mahagga Yeah, and the thing is, is that Allen was only about 5'10 or 5'11, no more than 190lbs. I grew up in Detroit, and I remember pops taking us to a game, where Dick Allen hit the centerfield scoreboard at Tiger Stadium during batting practice....We're talking about a 570ft home run!!
This is the way that you hit a homerun!!! It was later determined that this ball still had trajectory and if it did'nt hit the transformer, it would had went an estimated 650 feet!!!
@rw5791 ~ lol, the only "headcase" i see is you. you openly cheer for people to fail because you've made some non sequitur between championships and your biased image of their personality. hilarious.
@tomitstube of course personality is part of sports. It's called team chemistry, you idiot. Are u going to sit there and tell me u didn't get a kick out of seeing the steelers lose the super bowl to green bay?I mean, roethlisberger was the poster boy of wiggers but arron rodgers is someone a kid can look up to and try to emulate.
Willie Mays used to say 'I've got no comment on civil rights, I'm just a ballplayer''. Back then, if a black athlete spoke his mind, even in a calm and articulate manner, the white press labeled him a ''troublemaker'' and ''moody''. Black athletes ''place'' was to SHUT UP!!
@publicatdamagnificen ~ absolutely true. some black guys did, and were labeled exactly how you describe it. roberto clemente, dick allen, curt flood, and orlando cepeda to name a few who ventured vocally into the racist world they inhabited. they were all labeled bad apples by the white press.
@tomitstube Dick Allen: Several reporters went to former teammates and asked about him, individually. Goose Gossage:"Dick Allen taught me how to pitch to certain hitters and took me under his wing". Mike Schmidt:"I wanted to quit baseball until Dick sat me down and mentored me, he taught me to loosen up and have fun".
Chuck Tanner: "Dick Allen was the consummate team player, he was our captain and went out of his way to help all the rookies". The press slandered him brutally!!
@publicatdamagnificen Dickhead allen was the first of a new breed. Complete assholes who rubbed their team mates the wrong way. I was overjoyed to see the angels defeat bonds and the giants in the world series because it represented so clearly the triumph of a bunch of guys who played with team spirit.Fuck bonds and fuck allen. They've got zero rings and that's the way I like it.
@rw5791 You sir are a liar, slanderer, and a very ignorant person. His former teammates said he was the ''consummate team player''. You are an insignificant person and not worthy of my time.
The Bible says: "Do not put wise words into the ears of a fool for he'll despise you''.......Goodbye Fool.
@rw5791 Allen was no more outspoken than Ted Williams. The whole rep b.s. that started with Allen was when white player Dick Stuart was traded after getting into a fight with Allen. The press blamed Allen and the fans bought it. Allen was under orders by management not to talk about it and from then on it all got worse. The truth is that Allen came to the aid of a black teammate who was being constantly bullied by Stuart. And the brave Stuart smacked Allen hard in the shoulder.
@lemaxmas This injury would haunt Allen for the rest of his career. It was made all the worse by the fact that Allen refused to leave the line-up in order to help the team. Before the injury Allen was on his way to a triple crown season. All of Allen's managers have only good things to say about him even now as do most of his teammates. Allen in order to be a team player played third base early on, a position he never played before. He what management wanted to help the team.
@lemaxmas u mean allen was no more of an asshole than ted williams, right? What's this "outspoken" crap?.Oh,allen was just a poor little oppressed minority,is that it?Come on ,man.Have you ever had to work with negroes? They are some of the most miserable asshole tyrants on the planet. No honor or class whatsoever.

@rw5791 translation from the colloquial moronic bigot slang into normal Englsh: "arf arf, woof".
Dog, you're only succeeding to dig that shit-hole you live in deeper and deeper. I've no more time to waste on you-- although in a pathetic way you do provide a great deal of humor. Hard to imagine the likes of you still exist and call themselves by name.
Carry on, no doubt you will-- alone, shouting out to no one; like a dog; as always.
@rw5791 What do you really know about Dick Allen? The only thing you know is what you have read or heard from the press. He was not liked by the press, so do you think everything they wrote was true? Do you know what went on in the clubhouse? Do you even know one of his team mates personally?
@allenr2 I know negroes and dick allen WAS a negroe.I'm not saying allen was as bad as ....say.....latrell sprewell but in the mid-sixties he may as well have been.
Let's just agree that allen was no babe ruth and leave it at that.
@lemaxmas You're welcome. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant and bigoted people are. I'm a 52yo black male. I used to hear my pops white co-workers and our neighbors talk about certain ( black) players were ''moody'' or ''troublemakers''. I was like, 8 years old, and I knew, then that something was wrong!
In my humble opinion, Dick Allen is the greatest example of being slandered because of a hateful white press.
@publicatdamagnificen Amen. Allen was hammered hard from day one. Roberto Clemente, who was a devoted follower of Dr. King also suffered greatly as well. I hated how those bigoted reporters made fun of his english in print while these same idiots would have sounded like the morons they were if they tried to speak spanish.
I think part of the reason this bad press about Dick Allen has once again reared it's ugly head is because of Bill James, who knows stats but has no grasp on anything else.
@lemaxmas Bill James knows as much about the being a baseball player as he does about fornicating. And how this big, fat slob hoodwinked the Boston Red Sox into hiring him as some sort of "consultant" will continue to forever amaze me. James never played a lick of sports in his life- Yet many people in baseball regarded this clown as some sort of Einstein. I just don't get it.
Gentlemen: Back in the day, black players like Willie Mays used to say "I have no comments on civil rights, I'm just a ballplayer". Black players ''place'' was to shut their mouths and play the game. If a black player spoke his mind- even in an articulate and calm manner, the white press labeled him a ''troublemaker'' and ''moody''. A black athlete's place was to SHUT UP!!
In this generation, with the live ball and other factors (steroids as of a few yrs ago), Reggie would probably have ended his career with about 650 to 700 hrs or more. His 30 to 40 plus hrs a year would be 45 to 65 hrs a year.
Reggie was one of my idols as a kid, maybe no. 1 idol. I drew a picture of him hitting a home run against the arch rival Royals in 1978 and sent it to Yankee stadium. It came back signed by Reggie and other post-card size photos were signed by about 7 other Yankees or so. I would like to say thank you to Reggie and the Yankees for everything. At the time, I was in shock and thought that it wasn't real, since I heard about ghost signers. Reggie was the premier slugger of his generation.
@jimithingjames egomaniac yes but also a strangely down to earth person.Players like dick allen and barry bonds are cancers on a team and thats why they have no rings.Reggie has three that I know of when I followed the A's.
@rw5791 Yup, that's usually the description white people give to black players who are intelligent and don't go for the okey-doke.Players who definitely aren't boot-lickers.
@rw5791 He might be YOUR hero, but not mine. You ALWAYS have great athletes that never win championships; Barkley, Yaz, Ewing, Malone. Stockton, Langford, Quarry.
@Soulblackman reggie jackson,jordan,magic,bird..................it's not just their talent. They make their team mates better. Allen and bonds are cancerous to a teams spirit and that negates the talent they bring.
malone and ewing were head cases too although not nearly as nasty as allen and bonds.
@rw5791 Dick Allen's "Crime" was being an outspoken black man, so of course he was "cancerous". Bonds would have had a ring, were it not for the sissy pitching vs. him, the incessant intentional walks. Let's face it about the Phillies, they simply were not the team of destiny, unless you blame 1950 on Allen as well,
@rw5791 Dick Allen was a consummate team player. His bad rep is all due to the white press in Philly.
Allen ruined his career by intervening in a fight that Dick Stuart picked with a black teammate he was bullying with racial slurs. Stuart the brave hero, hit Allen with his bat in the shoulder causing a severe injury. Allen kept playing despite this for his team's sake. What was once a potential triple crown season was no more. This injury among others bothered Allen most of his career.
@lemaxmas You're 100% correct. I've never been to Philly, but from what I've heard, it's been a very racist city. In fact, Curt Flood said the biggest reason he rejected the trade to Philly was because of that. They didn't turn out to see Sonny Liston's return after he beat Patterson (he was problematic I admit).
Plus, they erected a statute about a fictional boxer (Rocky), and have no intentions of erecting a statue or tribute to a real Philadelphian- Smokin' Joe Frazier!
Absolute post hijacking in here. So much arguing in here about everything else, and so very little discussion on this home run.

I've been looking for footage of this homerun for a while thanks for posting it!

In this generation, with the live ball and other factors (steroids as of a few yrs ago), Reggie would probably have ended his career with about 650 to 700 hrs or more. His 30 to 40 plus hrs a year would be 45 to 65 hrs a year.

@rockstarzep Even more homers for Mays, Mantle, Williams, Foxx, Ruth and Gehrig to name a few who were even better than Mr. O who was no slouch.

Reggie Jackson was quoted as saying about Tiger Stadium: Hitting in Tiger Stadium is better than sex."

My Dad was at this game.

Reggie Jackson is, was and will always be -- an egomaniacal douche-bag. (the quintessential NY Yankee)
jimithingjames 7 months ago
@jimithingjames egomaniac yes but also a strangely down to earth person.Players like dick allen and barry bonds are cancers on a team and thats why they have no rings.Reggie has three that I know of when I followed the A's.

@rw5791 Yup, that's usually the description white people give to black players who are intelligent and don't go for the okey-doke.Players who definitely aren't boot-lickers.

@Soulblackman so I guess latrell sprewell is your all time hero. The most fucked up a-hole to ever don a professional uniform?
That's cool 'cause ya know what? those jackass's never win championships,,,,,,,,,,,,
rw5791 6 months ago
@rw5791 He might be YOUR hero, but not mine. You ALWAYS have great athletes that never win championships; Barkley, Yaz, Ewing, Malone. Stockton, Langford, Quarry.
Soulblackman 6 months ago
@Soulblackman reggie jackson,jordan,magic,bird..................it's not just their talent. They make their team mates better. Allen and bonds are cancerous to a teams spirit and that negates the talent they bring.
malone and ewing were head cases too although not nearly as nasty as allen and bonds.
rw5791 6 months ago
@rw5791 Dick Allen's "Crime" was being an outspoken black man, so of course he was "cancerous". Bonds would have had a ring, were it not for the sissy pitching vs. him, the incessant intentional walks. Let's face it about the Phillies, they simply were not the team of destiny, unless you blame 1950 on Allen as well,
Soulblackman 6 months ago
@Soulblackman allen was a punk and bonds was a punk. That's why they have no rings.
rw5791 6 months ago
@rw5791 White people always say that about "crazy" black MEN.
Soulblackman 6 months ago
@rw5791 Dick Allen was a consummate team player. His bad rep is all due to the white press in Philly.
Allen ruined his career by intervening in a fight that Dick Stuart picked with a black teammate he was bullying with racial slurs. Stuart the brave hero, hit Allen with his bat in the shoulder causing a severe injury. Allen kept playing despite this for his team's sake. What was once a potential triple crown season was no more. This injury among others bothered Allen most of his career.
lemaxmas 5 months ago
@lemaxmas You're 100% correct. I've never been to Philly, but from what I've heard, it's been a very racist city. In fact, Curt Flood said the biggest reason he rejected the trade to Philly was because of that. They didn't turn out to see Sonny Liston's return after he beat Patterson (he was problematic I admit).
Plus, they erected a statute about a fictional boxer (Rocky), and have no intentions of erecting a statue or tribute to a real Philadelphian- Smokin' Joe Frazier!

If its not the best all star at bat, then its one of the top three greatest moments in all star history.

Because of this, people forget that FIVE OTHER HOFers hit home runs in this game - Aaron, Frank Robinson, Bench, Killebrew & Clemente.

I heard an estimate that it could have gone 700 feet. It was still rising when it hit the transformer.
