The best thing I can think of watching is that of a beautiful Border Collie doing what (S) He was meant to do.... Herd!!!
Besides my husband, my border Collie, Oban, is my best friend. He will be turning 4 Oct. 20th and I can honestly say that he saved my life and continues to every single day. Keep these wonderful videos coming!
She looks very much like Gael. Casey has a strong herding drive. Watching Gael I get chills. I love the breed but some of them tend to get under my skin. We are coming to your neck of the world next June, I would love to come and see your BCs. My husband says we are going half way around the world and I want to see border collies.....I guess I am just a Border Collie snob. Please keep more vids on Gael and the others. Thank you
I work the night shift over here in North Carolina, USA and I would have to say that your videos get me through the night. What a wonderful thing you all are doing to help these dogs and give them the opportunity to fulfill their destinies. I love your music and all of the stories associated with your dogs. Please keep them coming!
Gael is fine - yes we still have her. Wont part with her now, she is far to valuable to our work. Dot is taking a back seat as she gets on in years so Gael is slowly gaining more experience as a lead dog in control of the sheep. Maybe we should do aother video on her progress?
The song is called 'Song For Hope' by a band called 'Eskimo' - very talented. UT wont allow URLs in comments so - If you wanna know more go to our channel - use the link there to go to our website - go to the video page - find this vid and you will find a link to Eskimo's website.
I know of 2 BC rescue's covering Oregon - both good. All the best with the new dog.
Experienced dogs will keep an eye on other dog/s they work with in order to position themselves more effectively to control the sheep. You can see Dot doing this in the video.
Trainees tend to be so fascinated it is sometimes difficult to get their attention for long enough to call them off!
We rescued a BC from a vets office, where he was dropped off to be put down. The boyfriend of the owner had beaten him and supposedly Ripp snapped at him. "Ripp" is agility trained,& WONDERFUL! His esteem was so poor that he was terrified of my husband, did not come up to him for hugs for almost a year. My husband is so loving he gave him the time & space to realize not every man is bad. Ripp has become the best addition to our family! We hope to resume agility training again w/ him soon!
Thanks for sharing Ripp's story - sadly it's a familiar one in rescue. People beat dogs and get away with it, but if the dog snaps back it is seldom forgiven. Good that you stepped in when you did.
Your husband did right by allowing Ripp space. Very sensitive of him not to try and impose on the dog - worth it in the end.
Hope you do get back into agility - but whatever - have a great life together.
Yes, that's the way we look at it until they show us otherwise, but some BC's lack herding drive and in others it is weak - inherited instinct is not infallible!
We assess every dog around sheep and re-home according to results. Some go to herd, some as sniffer dogs, some as S&R dogs and some as companions - whatever the dogs shows us it needs most.
I train dogs. Not as sheepdogs but for search work. A lot of the dogs we use are Border Collies. They are both the best and the worst and seem to think, move and behave in a different way to other breeds we train.
Yes, they will think like a herding dog and you need to consider this when training or handling. Even as a failed sheepdog, a BC will still think like one and act accordingly. Also, they have an instinctive need to bond with and please their handler. If they don't respect the handler, no bond - therefore no reason to please, so poor results.
Lovely. I do BC rescue in Washington State in the US, and always try to place the motivated, high-drive dogs in homes that will herd with them. Sometimes we have to settle for agility training in homes that aren't prepared to herd. Ah - So beautiful to see that young dog learning. Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear from another rescue group that values the herding qualities of the BC and takes it into account. So many rescue groups simply see them and re-home them as pets, thus adding to the problem rather than the solution. Keep up the good work - all power to your rescue!
Kudos to all you folks who dedicate your time to rescuing such a splendid breed. I have been looking for this video to show my Mom who just lost her Border Collie, "RINGO," last year to old age. It almost killed all of us. Thanks for posting!
It is very difficult to lose a freind that you have had a close relationship with. It is so sad that their lives are so much shorter than ours and they always leave a gap that can never be filled. Sorry to hear of your loss. Working in rescue sometimes helps as there is always something to do - another dog needing help - it gives you less time to feel sad.
They say a good dog lives on in the heart of its owner. Keep the memories close and smile when you think or Ringo.

Was Gael distracted by the control dog when she first started training?

No. Keen dogs are seldom distracted by anything!

Gael is not easily distracted by anything.

Interesting. I thought all border collies were natural sheep Dogs.
