Safe to say that Diamond Head committed commercial suicide with Borrowed Time. Having said that though, it's an amazing record; slow, gloomy, oppressively dark, a fantastic album
Diamond Head suffered from appallingly bad management. I mean, being led by the singer's mum at this level was ridiculously amateurish.
Borrowed Time was a great melodic heavy metal album and reasonably successful but the material on the follow-up Canterbury was a bit too ambitious for the average headbanger to process. The sleeve was shit and pressing fault caused the first run of 20,000 copies to jump.
Good to see this. Dont ever remember seeing this on the OGWT.
Saw the band back in 1979 at the Golden Eagle in BHam. Not many there but fantastic. I loved their early songs (from the white album). Helpless, Its Electric, The prince (all of which I believe metallica covered but I have never heard).
Those days and those songs are what I like to remember when I think of Diamond Head.
This is actually one of my fave songs by any band. It's so complex, epic, and riffy-classic DH. The main riff is absolutely hypnotic as is the one that kicks in at 2:36 or so.
I reckon Joey Tempest from Europe owes a big debt to this singer, especially on Europe's first two albums. At certain points they're eerily similar (blatant rip-off maybe!)Joey went on to develop more of his own style from Final Countdown onwards, though, and went on to become hugely successful, for a while at least.
Not sure if DH were *the best* NWOBHM band "not to get the credit they deserved". They were actually very lucky to have a sponser in Lars Ulrich who helped them get some exposure and save them from obscurity. There were many other bands from that era who were really fantastic but got no credit whatsoever - and often no recording contract! Alas not many people remember bands like Limelight, Red Alert, Jameson Raid, Xero, all of whom could kick serious bottom. At least we have some legacy of DH...
The Jameson Raid Cd IS happening, trust me! Should be out this year. And to the three pillocks who gave me a thumbs down, I think Diamond Head were great - but at least they have had a bit of belated respect, have some for the guys who haven't been so lucky...
sammywhateveryourstupid name is - you maybe his son - but for the love of god SHUT THE HELL UP on the other videos - you cant do jackshit about it now, so stop whining like a tit!
It sucks because most people only listen to music that's 1) current and 2) mainstream. Maybe if people were a bit more adventurous they would find all kinds of kick ass music both in and out of the rock and metal genres. DH's legacy would have lived on with or without Metallica...
And that's exactly what I meant anyway. But it's not just about the legacy living on, but also igetting introduced to even more people, one way or anoter. If it's because Metallica, that's cool.
@MishuTaste Talk about a winning combination. They're directly between Zep & Met., two of the biggest bands in rock/metal history, yet they've been underrated for so long. They should've been one of the top 5 names in rock. They were no. 1 in my opinion.
@littleblitzkrieg A lot of record stores & radio stations will play whatever is popular because they want to MAKE HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY. They are afraid of taking risks because they could lose money. I had to drive about 20 miles to find a record store that sold a Diamond Head album.
This isn't from the Old Grey Whistle Test. It's from a promotional item released by MCA to promote their, then, new album. It was broadcast the wrong side of midnight on ITV once & featured the band miming to the entire 'Borrowed Time' album with fake crowd response tagged on the end of each song.
Yeah, did they clip it for the video or did the poster clip it? I am a big DH fan, and I never knew they made videos or have seen any lie footage of them until now.

Yay! I recorded this, but our classy 1981 Ferguson VHS recorder made an awful mess of it. Nice to see it again.

What happened to this stuff? 30 years later and it STILL rocks. I just wish Sean would drop the Robert Plant-isms. I hate to say it, but it's gay.

This is amazing. I love seeing old live videos of Diamond Head. Sucks most DH fans just like them because of Metallica. =(

Why would that suck? Would it be better for DH dissappear if it wasn't for Metallica's support? No...
