  • LMAO @ Jims leggings, the Barras overloaded with them back in the day, only fat wiman wear them now going to the Bingo! 2 Little ducks HOUSE! BTW the beret was better worn by a certain Billy McKenzie, R.I.P that man.

  • This concert really needs to be available to download, was awesome!

  • SEEN THIS BAND 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 25 YEARS, IST TIME IN THE 80S, THEN 90S AND LAST YEAR.BRILLIANT!! EXCELLENT MUSCIANS AND JIMS A GREAT FRONT MAN, FAB VOICE.

  • I saw this tour in Montreal. It was the loudest show ever. Simple Minds were booed twice by the very critical Montreal fans. Once when they announced they were playing Don't You Forget About Me (Not a real Simple Minds song) and when they announced that they were doing one last song. They didn'y play Someone, somewhere in Summertime. Hearing Jim say "Don't boo!" was epic.

Great band, amazing era in music

  • incredible, im 17 yrs old again. i will never forget the friday evening that chanel4 broadcast this as a TUBE SPECIAL. me and my mates talked about it for years

  • Well, Jim looks like Scorpions´s Lead singer Klaus Meine in these clothes!!!

  • Saw this on TV back in the day and LOVED this performance. thanks for posting.

  • Great song from sparkle in the rain. Jim is a fantastic here and he looks very good.

  • This is Truly Fucking Epic!

  • What on earth is Jim wearing? A blouson?

  • seen both the minds and U2 live and allthough U2 was allways my best band simple minds were just that little bit better in concert . awesome .

  • Did anyone say One of These Days? :D

  • One of the most UNordinary and simple rocksongs... Simple Minds are simply the best

  • Blimey, I remember seeing this on TV whilst I was at school, about the same yime I began boozing lol, always reminds me of my late teens! Quality!

  • I think Verona '89 is the best live performance of Waterfront... but hey, Alive in Rotterdam is not far behind. Mick on KB's, Charlie on EG, Mel, JK in vocals and don't forget the guy I forgot about playing bass!!!!!!

  • "One million years from today" and this will still be different class! Long live SM!!

  • This tour came to Dublin in '86, an open air gig in Croke Park which is now legendary and still to this day one of the best gigs I ever attended. Thanks for posting, brings back memories of an amazing day.

  • huh, was this 3 December 1985? The Waterboys were playing as well, weren't they ...? ...

  • saw them at wembley 29th august 1989, they were supported by texas, gun and the silencers, what a magical day that was.

  • one of the minds best songs love this version of it

  • More Goodtimes, Thanks Simple Minds

  • best version of waterfront...

    love ....love for ever!

  • i loooved the minds, i have this on video taped from tv 24 years ago it was called alive in rotterdam, i learned to play the piano because of this gig, still at it now. ive seen this literaly 100s of times

  • same time as me fella !! this was the pinacle of the minds !! i watched till the tape wore out !! tube special friday night !! it get no better live than this !!! amazing

  • Derek Forbes wrote this,,ask Robert Plant.

  • Wow, never realized this kind of footage existed! I was there, I recall every note. And here it is, right in my face!

Waterfront is the best opening for a live performance, as simple as that. I also recall the magic of this song while they played live out on the field in Torhout. Magic!

  • the three best december nights ever in Rotterdam Ahoy. With the Waterboys as opening act. Remember the second night almost passing out due to an overload of joints. but the music kept on pumping, waterfront, speed your love, book of brilliant things, up on the catwalk, ghostdancing, dont you and promised you a miracle. what a killer opening that was.

had the privilige to interview Jim years later, nice guy. and they still rock (and better than U2 btw)

  • Just a pity they pissed of Mr Forbes

  • this is possibly the best live recording of the minds and mr forbes was not there !!!

  • Forbes is present - in a way. His original bassline (the one note picked drone) is looped with Giblin playing over it. This the only song during the concert where he "performs" even if he is not there.

  • you mean sacked mr forbes

  • Seen SM 6 times live in the Netherlands in all kind of city,s but not this one, Rotterdam my hometown ha ha. Drove the whole country around for them and missed Rotterdam ,Simple mind

  • So far and still so good... And this beret, it's so... scottish !!! Great, great, great moment... I love these guys !!!

  • Wow! this brings back great memories! is there any way to put this in mp3 version? it would be fantastic to listen to whilst im out jogging!

  • yes there is download realplayer and then copy the video to real player then transfer it to to your mp3 !! great great live song

  • im going to sound like a novice (which i am!) but how to you do copy a video from here?

  • i am not sure about copying the video but i know you can transfer the musict to your mp3 player by copying the file to real player library and then tranfer it to your mp3 player i hope i have helped you

  • get an FLV downloader

  • THANKS for All your comments, I have had a great read. It would be wrong to delete this video now.

I only posted these videos because I could not find them on Youtube, and maybe someone else was looking too.

    Click the video for widescreen.

  • @Happy30th great video!! Sparkle In The Rain is a classic album!!!

  • Saw them 5 times on the recent tour better then ever .... but the intro to this version of waterfront still makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up !!Legends ... arise sir Jim

  • I VHS'ed this too, except it was on MTV and I loved it, wore the tape out in fact, the music was great and Jim looked sooo good here.

  • Comment removed

  • STV showed this at 12.30 am after New year 1985.I taped it and drove my entire family mad playing it back. The tape eventually broke.Ive got the headphones on and loving it all over again!!!

  • thats the same as i did mate ! best live concert i have ever seen

  • This is a fine live version but there is an even better version of this on 'u tube' type in waterfront live in verona. N no silly beret on wee jim's head either ha ha

  • Disagree.Thought the Street fighting years tour was great apart from the shit-awful sound!

  • saw them at the abc in glasgow out standing

  • went to see the minds at the nec arena last friday ( 27th nov 2008 ) on their 30 years tour . they opened with waterfront . . is there any better opening rift . . i dont think so . they were awesome . they get better with age . long live simple minds

  • They also opened on waterfront @ Shef on the 1st of dec! Was a truly awesome gig, playing all the classics! Shame they don't seem to use this composition of the song anymore though, probs cause they are missing Michael Macneil, he makes this version of the song; he's a true legend on them keys!

  • thats true he is fantastic . . but they seemed to not appreciate the song of late as much as they should , to be honest is it an opener or a mid set . . opener all the time , glad they saw sense to open 30 years with it , it is what simple minds are all about !!!!!!

  • that's "riff" by the way."Rift" is a burp.Long live The Minds!

  • without a doubt this is the best ever live performance of any band inmy memory ! i had this also on video from 1986! it got damaged after 18 years because i think i wore it out ! lol there is something magical about this music

  • The greatest ever filmed performance of this classic SM track.............yeah the opening bass beat is just the best thing live.......the whole crowd just jump up and down to the beat !! Amazing stuff........this is the edit version show on the tube in early 1986..........there is a film of the full version which is another 2 minutes long and even better !! Anyone got that version to post ??

  • yeah !you're right!since 2 years ago there was(on you tube) the whole video, more or less 10min!j got a videotape but it's the same lenght!in 1986 in san siro stadium,milan(60000 people)the starting gig song was waterfront and during the opening bass beat,j lose my brother because the whole crowd jump up and down to the beat!!goosebump Simple Minds best live band ever(with Muse)4 me!

    ciao cheers from italy

  • 6:26 when Mick hits the keys you get goose-bumps.What an amazing performance.

  • So brilliant - saw them at Ibrox that year, my friends had to chip in to buy each others tickets for 16th birthday presents - amazing, the stadium bounced at those opening beats.

  • I am so envious.I was 15 that year and two older friends of the family went. They lived in Perth(Scotland) and were staying at our house that night. When they came back they raved about the gig.I wasnt a fan at the time, but I became one immediatly and saw them several times, but I know I missed them at their zenith!

  • This is magnificent. I was 40 this year and Simple Minds are my fave band of all time. I went to Milton Keynes Bowl for this tour in June 1986. Watching this reminds me of the power these boys had live..the opening beat of 'Waterfront'is an amazing way to open a gig. It was the day before my 18th birthday and i'd never been to a gig like it..they were on stage for hours and the crowd were mental. This is great footage. Give me goosebumps.

  • i respect you greatly....im only 22 and wish i could have been alive at the time to expirience this kind of atmosphere..ive been to see them 3 times but this gig is just the best...

  • 1986 Milton Keynes Sunday gig was also my 1st of many many SM's gigs, the buzz is always incredible, now looking forward to the December gig in Cardiff and the entirety of New Gold Dream being played.

  • Will be at cardiff in December, went too the milton keynes gig june 22nd 1986, i was 14 the most amazing musical experience of my life next to the 89 gig at the arms park

  • I know what you mean, seen them many times, somtimes 3 times in one tour in the Netherlands,we had a group and we bought tickets for al the concerts. Waterfront made the whole stadium bounce up and down;)Great fun,in ,86 in msterdam I was standing next to the stage so I could look Jim right into his eyes ahhh.memories ;)

  • 1985 was a rough ride with Public Image Ltd, the Residents, Buzzcocks, Kraftwerk, Lee Perry and all that stuff. I didn't pay much attention to Simple Minds but that was a mistake. A real mistake. They are indeed mysterious and magical.

  • Never too late to discover this incredible band! Come and join the huge following here on YT.There are other songs from this show on this site.Turn it up and enjoy!

  • this gives me goosebumps........unlike todays music there is somthing mysterious and magical about this band

  • if i remember correctly, this was a TUBE special. Channel4 archives might have something for podcasts

  • what can i say ! perfection live !!!

  • Fantastic! thanks so much for posting - I have been waiting years to see this again! Do you know if the whole concert is available on DVD?
