this clip was taken from an instructional DVD for beginners. Each movement has been clearly defined so that the newcomer can see what is involved. I look forwards to seeing your video of this performed "fluidly" o everyone can see what you mean.
Are you saying that this kata only has value to beginners? If so I disagree 100% I'm afraid. This kata covers off movement through a complete 360 degree space, and for that one reason alone is useful to aikidoka of all levels.
Not at all. What im saying is this kata is taught to beginners. I am a 5th Kyu and was taught this. When paired up it teaches you distance, contact and control of a jo which I found to be perfect for adding to my arsenal.
I loved it! There are so many things about Akido that I loved when I practiced it.
I am practicing this kata under the instruction of an excellent instructor with a weapons mokuroku from Saito Sensei, and in his opinion the 13 is the most advanced of all of Saito's solo katas, to be taught only after the suburi, several of the awase, the 6, and the 31. The difficulty stems, he says, from the multiple pivots, which need to be done on a dime, and the need to extend one's attention all around you.
I'm sure he is correct. I'm not sure i entirely agree about the order in which things should be taught, as this varies depending upon the way in which each individual processes information. You are very lucky to have this level or tuition at your dojo and you should perhaps encourage your sensei to put some clips on YouTube - the more exposure Aiki gets the better.
The kata was recorded for the "Aikido - the first steps" DVD, aimed at newcomers to Aikido. The decision was to present all kata and suburi shown DVD as "neutral" as possible, only outlining the moves, so that we did not pidgeon-hole the material as being "Iwama-style" or "Aikikai-style" etc. If this was being performed as part of an examination by one of my people, I would indeed like to see a bit more life (!) in the moves and the overall shape more extended. Thankyou for your comments.
Thank you so much, now I understand some moments :)
