"That last sketch was first aired in 1970. Of course now, it is considered unacceptable to employ such crude sterotypes when depicting individuals based purely on their sexual preferences."
Cor blimey, that don't half take me back, lol.Anyone 'struggling' with their sexuality back in the 70s,well,I say struggling,I never had to lol,I always managed just fine. But for those who were, watching the likes of Dick Emery must've wondered whether they'd ever be able to be so 'free'! I'm not saying all homos were limp-wristed & effeminate, but 'Clarence' had buckets of confidence & was as 'out' as they come. Many of us wanted to be the same in our own way! BRILIANT!
hi all including the lizzie 121 mate i dont think he was gay i thought his family had blocked it he was my favourite comedian in those days he still is to this day did you all know he was once an raf pilot i m nearly sure i know his skill and wit and style will always be remembered in tv history and other i loved him so does my uncle in nots hes 87 im an pb manchester an IRISHman god rest him and all kind regards
The one thing you need to remember with all of these sketches is that it's all done without the slightesy hint of malice. It's pure, 'poking', of fun at the differences that we have. Perhaps, a little excentuated for comic effect, but it's still true to life. Nowadays, people seem, 'scared',to show any form of humor based on the differences we have in case they offend someone. So wht do we have now? Non-specific humour which doesn't relate to anyone. Give us the old days, anytime.
LOVE this... I am gay, and FUNNY is FUNNY... when I was 6 years old I kept saying 'ooh you are aweful, but I like you...' By they way, I am a lawyer and LOVE the legal sketch!
I just think this stuff is funny. I would much rather have this than foul language - not that I am a prude - it's just lazy. Yes, they are stereotypes but there are gays actually like this so to some extent it is reflecting real life.
i think weve all had quite enough of ever increasing amounts of political correctness in this country. and another thing. why dont they bring back the cane for gay homosexuals.
IIRC Graham Chapman had a lot to do with the conception and choreography of this sketch - partially inspired by the deliberately OTT goings-on of the clientele of the King William IV pub in Hampstead High Steet whenever any disgusted, uptight normals dropped by.
I hated the 1970s. I was an unhappy closeted gay teenager growing up in south london. Gay Lib didn't come to Peckham! I hated it when these programmes/films were shown. But now I can laugh at them. I have been out & proud for years. Larry Grayson is a GIANT and I can laff at my sister's 1970s anti-gay jokes: such as "Have you heard the one about the two poofs in a haunted house putting the willies up each other!" (smile). THANK YOU for Camp Cuts. No offence taken. None whatsoever.
i think we can laugh at ourselves thats the main thing, and we have come a long way ,all the 70s camp heroes were loved by all ,my idea on this is how is a joke told is it in fun or malice the tone of voice and the way its done can be identified straight away ,if anyone can take the mickey out of me i can do it far better than any stranger can ,i like being a raving pooof its who iam and i like who iam ,
@kimmimaroxjuugo I think Dick Emery's 'Clarence' is quite a strong character. He is shown as confident, cheeky and getting on with his life and doesn't care what anyone thinks. Compare this to some of the stereotypes we see today, such as on Jonathan Ross where they are shown as ineffectual 'poofs'. The fact that they are gay men going along with that makes it worse in my opinion and just lets Ross off the hook..
absolutely - his cheerful repartee and amiable warmth was refreshing to see and I reckon was not dissimilar to many people's experiences with their don't-ask-don't-tell colleagues/acquaintances/neighbours back then. Not all of 70s Britian were hate-filled gay-bashers...
Yes, the Hettie prison sketch is so hilarious. I did go to a men's prison once when I was doing my master's degree on American prisons. The difference was, I went through the front door and not over the wall!!! Brill sketch though.
To promote homosexuality is wrong ,they suffer from a mental disorder and should be treated accordingly,an AK47 would not go a miss. For a man to put his cock up another mans arse is immorral
The PC brigade have spoiled it big style! Look at people like Julian Clary who uses his sexuality to get laughs! Time we thumbed our noses at the PC mob and carried on laughing!!
It's funny though, how a lot of those British actors, famous for playing campy characters, were themselves gay, like John Inman, Charles Hawtry and Graham Chapman
There were loads of complaints in the 70's/80's about Dick Emery, Kenneth Williams, Frankie Howerd, John Inaman, Larry Grayson et al, being gay stereotypes - I say visability at all costs
just reading your comments, I remember both the shows and the controversy you mention. Visability yes but more to ther poing these sketches are, in opinion, side splittingly funny. and I'm as gay as a box of frogs!

Graham Chapman was part of the team and a homosexual, I doubt they meant any offence, in fact Graham often joined in the joke.
