kergal: The song came out in early 70's & the film in the late 90's. I empathize w/ you for your loss but let's not equate this song w/ THAT. There's no connection, obviously. "It's only castle's burning", for me, decries how humanity has become...well, fill in the blank.
@TheFatalEmbargo Yeah, but I grew out of it about 10 years ago when I got over my middle age crisis. It was touch and go there for a while. All better now.
This version sucks. It's a great movie, but Annie Lennox just ruined an amazing sound. Neil's original was so sad yet uplifting. This version makes it sound as if she was just bored and needed a paycheck, so she decided to cover a classic,
@HughCarpenter At the time of the Twin Towers first memorial, I was going to suggest this as a fitting song to describe the grief and horror felt and endured by the families torn apart by this awful event. However I was worried that Americans might have been offended by its explicit reference to " it's only castles burning". Human emotions are so powerful when innocent and helpless people are attacked that it is hard to contain the sense of outrage that any caring person would feel. Peace.
@hmscollingwood You americans are so selfish it really makes me wanna puke . Watch around you and you'll see what real sorrow is, your country can't stop being greedy and is willing to kill human beings to fulfill your need of power... Don't you see what the real problem is ? We must all live in peace, not only americans !! ALL
Written thirty years before the dreadful event... The ultimate anthem and tribute to all the people and families, the rescue services and others affected by the Twin Towers 9/11/2001. The images will be etched on our memories for ever more. Peace to the world and wars innocent victims. Love is all we need... not weapons, to ensure our survival. As Winston Churchill said "Jaw, jaw is better than war, war". Now, we are finally conducting a dialogue with our arch enemies - fellow human beings.
@popote35 Whoever you are and where ever you're from (?), just to clarify: (a) I'm British and from Belfast, N. Ireland (b) I've lived in the south of England since Nov 1972, having left the rancid politics and mindless violence which is still being perpetuated to this day, along with miles of sectarian, ghetto-ising so-called "Peace Walls". The old Alexandra Park off the Antrim Rd, Belfast, is now segregated with a wall - so we have Protestant and Catholic trees and grass. Join dots!
@popote35 To add to my somewhat modest credentials: I also have a son in law in Afghanistan serving in the Signals Regiment out of Blandford Dorset, UK. My daughter and grandson are living on camp in Germany. Oh yes, and I'm a member of the Green Party... how power crazed is that..?
@popote35 HMS Collingwood (clue). Royal Navy, St Vincent class dreadnought which fought at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. My grandfather's battleship. He served in her as a gunner in 'A' turret, Maintop Division, for 12 years, until she was scrapped in 1923 as part of the Arms Limitation Agreement of 1922. The future King George VI (King's Speech) was in his gun crew for 3 years 1913-16. My GF formed part of a 3 man honour guard during His Majesty's Coronation Visit to Belfast in 1937.
@hmscollingwood that's a lot to be proud of I'm sure. But I need to point at the war. You might disagree, but don't you think war is made ( officially ) to protect people. This need of security is brought because we are divided by nationalism, religions and so on. So my point is, by looking for security in our nation, religion ... we are actually dividing ourselves, human beings, which leads to this quest of security. What's the point of this whole BS ???
@popote35 Sorry, but which war are you referring to? Afghanistan? Irak? Divisions, I suggest are brought about by irreconcileable differences made worse by a refusal to negotiate, except on self centred terms. War between nations and tribal/ethnic/religious groups is no different to war within relationships. Humans are no better at marriage than they are at international politics. Wherever you go the poor and uneducated get exploited by the rich and powerful. Osama Bin Laden was no exception.
@hmscollingwood I don't remember this in the film; but re: the Towers, I'd have trouble with the lyric "bring you down", because I immediately thought of bringing the *Towers* down.
@kerrgal Dear Kergal. I have no recollection of making the above comment. It is not even in my usual writing style (I don't use asterisks to highlight words). That aside, I am sorry to learn of your loss. I see that you are a musician, so you understand the power of music to reach the lowest levels of the human psyche where logic and rationality, and often our built-in or acquired self-defence mechanisms, have no ability to resist the emotive message.
Which is why sometimes certain music or songs are banned by extremists, whether religious or political. Think Taliban, and the French singing ' La Marseillaise' against the Nazis singing 'Die Wacht am Rhein' in the 1943 film 'Casablanca', (on You Tube - sorry, You Tube prevented posting the link) etc.
@hmscollingwood Hi. I think you misunderstood my comment, the asterisks are mine, for emphasis. I was just saying that I think the song lyric, "don't let it bring you down" could make people think of bringing the towers down. At least that was my reaction. I agree with you about the lyric "it's only castle's burning", it would conjure the towers burning and "it's only" is the total opposite of the affect of 9/11.
@kerrgal I understand. I know it's not about it and from years earlier but Don Henley's "New York Minute" Still gives me the chills. It was in my head the entire day when I was taking calls from NYC on 9/11 We all have our own associations
Back to this song: Is it blasphemy to like this version more than the original? Her voice softens the bleak lyrics.
Porbably the kindest song ever to my heart... plus it brings back memories and moments of the Film.. an unforgettable scene. I dont think any films I 've watched all my life summarize Life better than this film. The perfect combination ofusperb music and acting results in something that is almost impossible to describe in words....
But we understand his flaw in logic, and we WANT to like him, but we can't quite do it. It is not until he decides not to sleep with the girl that we as an audience can like him completely. And we watch his painful decision to withhold his own impulses, while we ourselves consider what it truly means to grow up.
But maybe some explosion-fest is more your kind of movie. Try something animated, with lots of guns. You don't quite have the depth of intelligence to interpret this stuff.
@TheVoiceofresistance He also realizes that if he makes love to her, he will be depricing her of HER youth. It's at this point that Lester truely matures, and appreciates what he has rather than trying to chase lost years. The viewer, while watching this movie, loves every moment of Lester's rebellion, because many people can empathize with him.
Ah-huh...and did it ever occur to you that the arbitrary distinction between 'minor' and 'adult' only came up in the past century or so. For the 3 billion years or so before that, it was pretty much free-for-all. There are no blanket morals that can be applied to everyone, just as there are no 'good' or 'evil people, just people who made decisions either selfishly or unselfishly. And I would say it's pretty damn human to give in to your emotions and baser drives. If its consensual, its all good.
E' una canzone stratosferica,malinconica e lieta allo stesso tempo,piena di speranza...Annie Lennox e' una grandissima!Sfido chiunque a cantare riuscendo a trasmettere quello che trasmette lei...auguri a tutti!!

@Casanovaishate Ah-huh . . . that would be where a middle-aged man is about to commit child molestation, or at best, the rape of a minor, correct? That's not "human." That's twisted and perverted.
@TheVoiceofresistance yo dude, chills obviously you dont get the movie. the guy was having identity problems, he missed his youth, and the girl reminded him of that, the time in his life when he was enjoying life. hence why he became SO infactuated by her. it happens. haha.
@TheVoiceofresistance You obviously didn't watch the fucking movie. Or you did and were just too stupid to get it. The movie is beautiful, just as the scene is because it's about a man who realized he's been suffering from an unlived life. He becomes infatuated with the girl because she reminds him of his youth when he was doing what he wanted to do. He never molests her. They are about to make love when he realizes that his youth was beautiful, and now it is over.
