Vader couldn't bring himself to destroy Luke, that's the point. He couldn't before in Episode V, he saw all he had lost in Luke. Which was why he decided to destroy the emperor instead.

Love is what brought Anakin to the dark side...however, I think that the love for his son Luke is was what created the inner conflict that he experienced in Return of the Jedi. Great vid. watching the fight scene realise something - Luke had Kendo sword training - very Jap style his stance and fight. very fluid, I think that is why it was so believable that he won the fight - not so coreographed like others.

Though Vader was weaker in the Force than the Emperor (He lost so many midichlorians when his limbs were ... amputated ... by Obi-Wan), he was far, far stronger than the average Jedi. In addition to this consider that he was not only a master of Djem So, but had customized it to suit his strengths and weaknesses.

As for 'light sparring session', I'd hardly consider attacking an eighty year old Sith as a padawan with half-completed training a 'light sparring session'. Anakin was out of his depth. When he lost to Obi-Wan, it was a combination of his natural overconfidence, corruption of the Dark Side, and his form's (Form Five, Djem So - the agressive form) weakness to Obi-Wan's mastery of Soresu - the defensive form.
