  • Why is everyone complaining about how "bad" they are. Geez.

  • SO PROUD OF JOSEFINA.. I'm also argentinian (vamos argentina!) and I can't believe how far she got! :)

  • I couldn't wait until Tony died. Horrible.

  • @JuliaDarling i dare you to do any better

  • I don't get all the people complaining about other people's opinions. That's what comments are for. I personally don't like his vibrato, I think he's overusing it and it sounds mechanical to me. And I don't watch Glee...

  • god they're amazing. such strong and beautiful voices.

  • Josefina is wonderful, i'm from rosario and i study where she studied

  • 3:33 yeah... she sukcs.... COME OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

  • Why do I feel like everyone saying horrible stuff are glee watchers?

  • josefina just isnt good...at all...yikes

  • Fascinating how people feel qualified to judge and rate... AllI wanna say is: they are real singers, singing live. Not a bunch of teenagers syncing to the dull auto-tuned studio version of their song.

  • josefina kinda sucks, I like Lea Michele as Maria so much better

  • I like his voice well enough, but her voice, and their two voices together... makes me, literally, put my fingers in my ears. Ugh.

  • a lot off about this peformance. disappointing.

  • *sigh* their voices aren´t half bad, but just completely wrong for the roles of maria and tony....what is worse though, i´ve got the feeling those two haven´t truly internalized their roles. they sing it as if its just another song - where´s the drama, the despair about how hopeless their love is?!

  • Watching this video made me think. This Matt guy must be a great dancer... Just cause he was horrid and not the right voice type for the part. I'm sure he sounds good somewhere else but not as Tony

  • Ok, they're both just awful. just a total mess.

  • Um.... Is it just me, or is she REALLY nasally? like unpleasantly? (And he took it a little overboard with the vibrato...) Overall performance: 4 out of 10.

  • Say what you want about Matt, personally, I don't like his voice. But there's some reason he was cast in the part- if he really had a horrible voice, he wouldn't have been cast. He obviously has something good the casting director saw in him.

  • Josefina Scaglione is amazing!!!

  • josefina scaglione is amazing!!!

  • Will forever be one of my favorites.

  • Oh but you should see him dance...

  • At Sondheim's 85th birthday concert I thought he was a very good Ben from the follies

  • i want him to sing raoul in the phantom

  • He has a nice voice, but it's too... thin.

  • whatever notes he's hitting, he sounds like a goat

  • I absolutely love Josefina and Matt. The best Maria and Tony since the original Broadway production.

  • Oh my Josefina sounds so awesome! Matt is great too, but she's better!

  • I love Matt and Josefina together.

And no one ever compliments the orchestra- I think they did pretty good too.

  • Josefina Scaglione rechazó el papel de Christine en el fantasma de la ópera versión argentina para hacer de María.

  • They compliment each other incredibly and both of their voices absolutely soar together.

  • what's with tony's voice. not the right sound for the role.

  • not that anyone will listen to my opinion but I think they're both very professional singers. Very talented and in control. Anyone who slags them off is obviously just jealous. I tend to agree that, despite their talent, their voices grate a bit. Nonetheless, on their own they're brilliant.

  • Josefina Scaglione, she is great and she is from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina!!!!

    Amazing again!

  • @spc1689 His voice is not strong? You have NO idea what the hell you're talking about, stop acting like you do. Matt C. did a great job singing this score.

  • I can't believe Josefina Scaglione is only 22 when they filmed this.

She is amazing and very beautiful.

  • @mikelnohands 22??

  • she is overpowering him so much, it was quite messy

  • it's quite a mess !

  • THe accompianment practically ruined this. It was very poor, out of tune, almost amateurish. Not a good production at all.

  • @RSlug789 i totally agree

  • both of there voices arent that great. And Matt was definately not a good choice for Tony. Tony is a "Polack" in the show, and Matt looks REALLY Irish. Joesfina is gorgeous, but your voice does NOT fit Maria. Her voice is pretty, but it just doenst have that classical feel to it. It's unique, but she needs a better tone and as I said before, classical. I recently saw the tour of West Side Story (2010) and that show was cast perfectly!! It was amazing!! West Side Story is my favorite musical. :)

  • @bubblybroadwaybaby I saw the play yesturday and luckily for me they recasted Tony, Maria, and Anita for that show. XD

  • i am obviously in the minority when i say Matt's voice (AND VIBRATO) is really amazing. it sounds clear, healthy, fresh, and classic all at the same time. I dont care for Josefina though.

  • I didn't really like either of them

  • I agree, they are both very talented, but their voices do not blend at all...

  • They are good, but that overuse of vibratto just kills it for me.

  • I don't think they're that bad they're good but I hate when people add that vibrato to their voice it's obnoxious.

  • Wow. I don't like them. Maria is REALLY breathy.

    I'm not that impressed.

I think Tony is better than Maria is though.

  • His voice make me want to vomit. Also, in general that is way too much vibrato from both of them. It takes away from the beauty that is already in the music.

  • The guy that does Tony has a good voice, but not the right one for Tony. And I find them both to be too nasally.

  • @FluffyMuphin111 She has a good vibrato... Maybe it's not right fo WSS or any musical, but she's rather good. His vibrato I didn't like at all

But on the other hand, I saw WSS few weeks ago and they replaced tony by now... and the new one is better.

  • Matt Cavenaugh needs to keep his mouth shut and just look pretty.

  • @spc1689 anita always steals the show XD

  • Who would believe this is actually Broadway quality performing. This is like a limp high school production, and the man as Tony, in particular, is totally hopeless.

  • Josefinaa!!! I SAW HER PLAY AMBER FROM HAIRSPRAY WHEN IT WAS PERFORMED IN ARGENTINA!!! <3 LOVED HERRR

    grosaa josee

  • Tune those strings! Ugh!

  • @broadwyfrog AMEN.

  • They are by far the best Tony and Maria ever.

  • Can never grow tired of this classic.

  • omg...

  • so i just read one of the highest rated comments, saying matt's voice isn't strong at all.

.....ummm...did you guys hear the notes he was hitting? the rich vibrato? the smooth sound? the sheer ease with which he sings? not to mention that wonderful A sitting in his head voice?

maybe this person means someone different, surely they can't mean matt.

  • @ohmagaod I agree I think Matts voice is gorgeous. It's just Marias thats not great.

  • Smitty butchered Josefina's surname in the intro. It's pronounced "Skahg lee OH nay".

  • I thought the guy doing Tony added a fresh new sound to his role.

  • too rushed

  • I agree with BlueJeanBaby012. They both have phenomenal voices, but they didn't seem right together. Richard Beymer/Jim Bryant and Natalie Wood/Marni Nixon will still have a place in my heart. :)

  • I just saw West Side Story last week, and Josefina was breathtaking!! She gave me goosebumps! But It wasn't Matt Cavenaugh who played Tony, it was Jeremy Jordan! And in my opinion he was 10 times better than Matt.. I find Jeremy put more soul in his character, especially while singing.. I'm surprised I can't find any videos of him and Josefina..

  • I love Matt Cavenaugh he was born and raised in my home town and hes coming down this weekend to my school!

  • It's true. you can only hear Maria and not Tony. The Anita in this show is wonderful though.

  • I think they did great but thats partly because my school band went to New York and we saw West Side Story....IT WAS AWESOME!!!

  • Wow...their voices DO NOT blend!!! And when they sing together all you can hear is her!

  • Did you all know that the director find Josefina by Internet? She reject the role of Christine for the Argentina's version of The Phantom for been Maria!

    Josefina, sos un orgullo nacional.

  • i dont like that its so bumpy when he sings...idk the real term but maybe u guys will get what i mean

  • @BlueJeanBaby012: HAHAHAHAHAHA indeed!!! but i think everyone is just more into the modern rock kinda music then these love ballads

  • ..And this is why Hair won... =)

Goregous voices, though. But not together.

  • voices dont match at all, separately they are talented, put them together andyou get a mess

  • broadway people hafta be so much more talented than movie/tv actors, they needa know how to sing too

  • WOW she is hot!

  • his voice is annoying.

  • I saw this. IT WAS AMAZING

  • she sounds way to head nasily.

  • i watched it like 2 weeks ago and i saw matthew hydzek as tony and i liked him SO MUCH BETTER than this guy. and josefina scaglione is SO AMAZING. her voice is super high but shes incredible.and shes so nice i got to talk to her after the show.

  • i saw this version of west side story a few month ago.. and i was not impressed.. his voice is anoying, and her voice was weak.

  • Josefina's voice is very beautiful and she has lovely vibrato but I feel on the shorter notes her voice is a little weak

  • What? She's AWESOME ! great actress and singer... She acted in hairspray in Argentinas was all an honor ♥ I hope see her soon ♥

  • What are you talking about? Joesefina's voice is out of this world! Powerful and beautiful in every aspect! She is so talented!

  • @emmaismusic uhmm thenn you singgg and go on broadway,or i forgott you havee no talenttso you comment badly on vids.

  • This guy did a horrible job as Tony. He was not believeable. His voice is not strong at all.

Maria was good in the show, but Anita stole the whole show.

  • @spc1689

Shut up. These two are best Tony and Maria ever

  • @kayandmiguel211

I guess we share different opinions, but there is a good reason why he is no longer doing the show.

  • @kayandmiguel211 no the best Tony and Maria are Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood as actors and Marni Nixon and Jimmy Bryant as singers.

Those 4 persons will ever be Tony and Maria

  • @xxChiQuiTitaxx73

You are dead wrong. What I said is the truth.

  • @kayandmiguel211 well i respect your choice, but there were many actors and singers who played Tony and Maria, however compare to Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, they are forgotten! when we think "West Side Story" we immidiately think about the great movie of 1961 and the actors and Marni Nixon and Jimmy briant who dubbed them

  • @xxChiQuiTitaxx73 But you're wrong

  • @kayandmiguel211 well if you say so, i like the movie, this great classic and you prefer broadway, deal^^

  • @xxChiQuiTitaxx73 well if you say so, i like the movie, this great classic and you prefer broadway , deal^^

  • @spc1689 Anita always stole the show! Chita started the tradition, and then Rita... :)

  • news flash!!!

this is supposed to be a concert type preformance. notice they are not in costume. they arent supposed to be playing the parts here. just singing.

  • Hmmm... disappointing! She was too nasal and no warmth in either of their voices...

  • Oh my, they're great singer's but "Tony" is nowhere strong enough and "Maria" isn't feeling what she sings. She's meant to be in love with him... Still amazing singers though

  • hermosa Jose! ♥

  • i actually disagree--I saw it about a week ago and Josefina was supurb--she conveys the part so brilliantly--i met her after the show and she is also a very down to earth, totally cool person-and she has a beautiful voice in general not just operatic (it said in her credits that she was Amber Von Tussle in the Argentian version of Hairspray)-on the other hand Tony did not wow me--and as always Karen Olivo is amazing onstage and off :)

  • @italiairishjon That's right. Josefina is the best Maria ever. And Matt is best Tony ever.

  • Josefina is an amazing actress.

  • @chaceecraw yep. Best Maria ever

  • i always get chills when i hear this song!

  • not so much.

  • Yea what's missing is passion.

It's blank singing. Talent without emotional contribution.

It's like there's no meaning behind what they're singing, they're simply singing.

That's what happens when actor's "act" and don't live, the audience can tell and that's why its so lacking.

  • This is a concert, meaning they are doing minimal acting. I haven't seen Cavenaugh in the show but I saw Josefina with Matthew Hydzik and the passion was certainly there.

  • Sorry, guys...I do like it. I have seen it live and, man, I believed them. Maybe that's just me...but still! Very good!

  • im not impressed

  • i like how they pronounced 'address' clearly. i never knew what they were saying there until just now.

I agree he vibratos too much though.

  • not as good as the originals. he sounds too modern and from 47-49 for her singing "in everything i do"? NO POWER BEHIND IT.

  • He uses too much vibrato and his voice is a bit annoying if you ask me. She is beautiful and with a powerful and sweet voice. Nevertheless, they have chemistry which means they can act while singing the song.

  • I agree with everything except the chemistry. I felt none.

The Bway show for me has great sets, and of course it's great to hear the orchestra live. The dancing is passable. I felt no emotions for these characters. Tony and Riff, I get a sense they have absolutely no regard at all for what it might mean to live the characters they're supposed to be portraying. It felt like a high school production in flyover country.

  • I felt the chemistry to be honest... it's not just in the voice, it's in the eyes, their expressions and the song is to be sung with a certain chemistry: that's why Sondheim and Bernstein are geniuses.

Important thing about such musicals is that you should be able to dance and sing in character and imo I felt these 2 did. I wasnt lucky enough to see the bway show :( but if I did I might have agreed with you.

  • they have the chemistry of burritos and my asshole for most of this song

  • you cant do shit so stfu hes amazing.

  • would you look at those heels!

  • i think her voice is too nasily

  • and he uses too much vibrato

  • well she has white skin but shes latina, hispanic we come in every color!

  • Excuse me Nena, she's not hispanic. She's Italian.

  • shes not u idiot shes from argentina.!!!! search it fucker!!!

  • and i know shes from argentina, cuz i am too and i watch her on hairspray

  • Aii, Nena, when will you learn? There's a whole bunch of Italian immigrants in Argentina, and Germans too. Scaglione, Nena, is Italian. I forgive you for calling me "idiot" OK? I know you meant that for yourself. Now that you learned something from me, behave.

  • OK, I won't call you Nena. I'll call you bruja.

  • by the way dont call me nena. thnx

  • oh and this is my other nickname.

  • i don't know what the fuss is about. its a revivial you can't expect the same as the original. and her voice is breathtaking.

  • those high notess are AMAZZIINGGGGGG thaugh

  • they arent as classical as I would like them to be, but they are very very good, look at her heels! lol, sooo high!

  • This girl is alright, but Marni and Natalie Wood created Maria, and I will forever see and hear them in my mind.

  • Well actually, Carol Lawrence created the role on Broadway in 1957 I believe.. The movie came out in 1961. She is THE Maria.

  • Well, Marni and Natalie created the first Maria I saw, so in my mind I will always see them.

Sort of like how many will always see Judy Garland as Dorothy.

  • listen to the original broadway cast recording of westside story. by the way, they were the first maria I saw, too.

  • Carol Lawrence's voice was perfect for this role. Josefina's voice is beautiful too. Both voices are perfect for the part of Maria.

  • you have the correct names but you're thinking of the movie version which came out in 1961, not the 1957 stage version. for the correct facts, look at GypsyPrincess1486's comment.

  • Why is everyone forgiving her because it's "her first Broadway performance?" The idea is that you get all your firsts out in smaller shows, and THEN you go to Broadway with a polished product. Yeah, she's only 20, but she gets paid the same as the seasoned 30 year olds. She rocks the last note, though-- I'll give her that much! There's a gorgeous voice in there.

  • it may be her "first" here, but she is definitely not a novice. She did many things in "broadway" theaters in Argentina before she came here.

  • She is amazing in person-just saw West Side Story 2 days ago...hard to translate to the awards show, esp. without costume, etc.

  • This is not their best. Their voices do blend well in the actual show.

  • she is beautiful! if she is ony twenty she has many years to strengthen her voice...but she sounds great as is...

  • she is twenty years old. that is amazing. :]

she is soo good. and the roll is even more challenging bc they added so much more spanish

  • she's more spanish than she is english. so it could be easier for her.

  • of course shes latin. shes from argentina she has nothing english!

  • The Girl is Maria Josefina Scaglione. She is from argentina. I think she is amazing. She only have 20 years old, and this is her first performance on broadway. Give credit for her!. Aguante jose carajo! Desde Buenos Aires, Argentina!. PD: Search libertango on youtube, this video was the passport for her to broadway. The producer of WSS, saw her on this video, and gave her the role of Maria.

  • she's pretty fine, but I don't like his performance, is he performing in the musical in broadway??, I'm going the 13th sept, thanks, cheers

  • I would like it a bit more if her high notes were a bit clearer, but I think she's fantastic, especially for her first Broadway show. And Matt Cavenaugh is not bad at all, he's just missing that whole 'cultured' feel. I don't know it just is missing passion, I guess. But this was from a concert, not a performance. It's a nice job. Not superb, but nice.

  • they r pretty good but i dont see any chemistry

  • Honestly, this isn't a very good rendition of this song. It just feels...stiff. He's singing with far too much vibrato, and she's singing through her nose.

  • I agree. Not the best choices for these parts. They're both very talented in their own ways, don't get me wrong, but there's something missing with both of them in this show.

  • completely agree. I was very disappointed in all of the leads except Anita, who was AMAZING.

  • OMG I TOTALLY AGREE.

I saw this on broadway last month and my bf didnt believe me when i said it just wasnt right and anita was by far the most amazing.

I think the problem is josefina is an opera singer and it doesnt suit the songs either.

  • feeling is missing,,,they dont look in love,,,,thats whats missing,,,,

  • we'll then your farts should make an album, sounding like that they'll probably even win a Grammy

  • your farts must sound pretty darn special

    haha

  • aguante La Jose! ja

  • wtf are you all talking about!?!?!

    they both are amazing!!!

i would like to hear some of you sing this song and sound as half as good as she does. jeeeeze.

  • I don't love his voice, but he
