You make some very good points, but good luck getting that control in a real fight. The threat is not gonna stand there like the assistant did. As you said, he is gonna pull the knife hand away, but the student never tried to act in that fashion. Also, he is gonna move toward the front to reorient & you are going to have a very hard time setting that arm bar. THEN, you are gonna drop to the ground & bring that big blade right over your femoral artery??? Not a bad tehnique, but not good either.
Very good video what I also appreciated that the knife wielding opponent is actually muscular and not some skrawny karate student. Basically, showing a method that would save your life against a person that could physically overpower you.
@diamondjack1122 Lmao I was being friendly. Not offended. =) I was just giving friendly tips. =O Sadly, most robberies at rich people's mansions are with attackers that are professional ex-military with AK47's.. 3 guys.. defend yourself from that. Bah. They shot the entire family.. :/
@diamondjack1122 Well that is not funny, Jack. lol. Anyway, ju jitsu can help you defend from weapons when the attacker is holding it close to you. Very close. Mark my words. It might help you, but no martial art or defense sport or whatever art is a guarantee that you will win a fight. It all comes down to the situation at hand and what you can do. In any case, ju jitsu has defense techniques against a gun. I know that, because I am a Ju Jitsuka black belt. :P
@LeBadman Ehh, Daycare karate? Easy to spot: They recite oaths before or after practice and are great exercise but less help in a rough neighborhood. Find a beat-up school if you don't have one. Shotokan is usually friendly, but we hurt eachother and laugh about it. Bleeding from the lip and smiling like you DGAF is a great day.
"Most people that get on the news are not ex-navy seals or anything of the sort". What?! That's not true. A few months ago, assaults were done by exactly ex-military men. They are mostly done by them. Who else can control an AK47 effectively?
Having dependents with you forces you to put yourself between them and the assailant, generally forcing confrontation. I really have to learn these defensive techniques.
@ss5dojo maybe in the states - in the UK (London), i'm pretty sure most kids (who're the ones with knives nowadays) would go for the "prison shank" method. Walk up close on you when their mates are mouthing off, and then just pop you one in the gut or something... I'd go with cardio defense: run the f**k away!
this video will get you killed if you try that in real life. step1. Always evade what ever kind of slashing motion comes at you.!!!!!! Step2. Charge or bump the wepon arm when possible. try to stay behind them and. control the arm and have a block on the way it may come back at you. Step 3 Go for brain.. take out the brain. punch elbow there head. back of head.. you dont want to cut your fist on there teeth eyes nose. just punch the back of there head.knock out the brain. shuts off the knife
I would suggest working out on a tredmill and running the other way, because if you fight a guy with a knife you may take it from him but you will get cut. I think it's great to have a plan, but you need to either equal the odds or go the other way if possible.
Sorry man, hate to be a critic. But you have to daze your attacker for this to get even close to working.(A knuckle to the jaw). He might do this and he might do that. If this happens and if that happens, no one can remember all these steps. It will not work the way you want it to. You train for the unexpected and for your reflexes to do what you train them to do. Google- Guided Chaos Combat! Thanks
I have trained and currently instruct edged weapon defense and I would point out that you come very close to risking a femoral artery cut! Watching it slower, two times it came into the inner thigh on the way down. A rigid steel blade will not be forgiving like the rubber trainer. If you can adjust that it's a good move. thanks
A skilled knife fighter is not going to hold the knife in a reverse grip! That minimizes your number of attacks and also you dont curl the knife inward resting it against your forearm 1:04 your attackers blade will travel down yours and cut your arm. keep your thumb angled toward you. If your attacker is skilled with a knife you will never see it...only feel it as you colapse to the ground...bloody..

I am a firm believer that there are always multiple ways to solve any problem, so I rarely criticise others self defense vids, but I do see 1concern with this method. Both times you executed the takedown the blade ended up between the legs, too close to the femoral artery. Other than that I like the control this technique utilizes. and you could break that arm at the end if you cranked it. the power of both legs against an imobile elbow joint

I have 1 year training in street defence ,yes it is very good too train, but for people out there that have no way too do so or have a partner too help , you can watch some videos make sure you study it step by step in your mind ,it can save you ,it did for me by just watching and learning , roll playing it in your mind , but yes the best is too practice for real in a gym, good luck too all you
THE THREE C's: Clear, Control and Counter! Another counter ... once you step in and jam his arm, grab his wrist with your right hand and with your left, drives your fingers into his eyes, sending his head back. He will drop the knife once your fingers are in his eyes!
this is very and it needs years of training and rutine same as a "feeling for bodys". its good vid 5*. but dont forget, if you dont have years of training in martial arts, just run, take care of your life
im just smiling about those ppl that are saying "not good.wont work.and all such". the vid is a good showup of elemental and basic trainingtekniques. i trained years martial arts and i see here some stuff that saved me more than once my life.btw i work as a security guard in a lot of clubs.
Once again - for anyone tempted to say "This isn't good - this won't work - it wouldn't always happen this way": WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO, especially the first part. David clearly says that this is BUT ONE of many ways a knife attack MIGHT happen. The clip shows sound ways - not foolproof, not 100% guaranteed - but sound ways to defend against THIS TYPE of knife attack. Obviously escape if you can, but IF you have to stay & fight, then here are some SOUND things to practice, which MIGHT work.
and in real fight none will always do slash 2:28 and no one stab like that lol stabing pointing down the knife like that is not a good idea it is only show of
If you are attacked by an idiot with a knife, and put in a life and death you have two options, disarm or die. You will get cut most of the time,
masters0alive I agree with, a belt as a strap if you have time, or anything in your enviroment, just don't stand there and do nothing!! I train here in highpoint ppc. his techniques work !!!
interesting-but-when i took lessons in greece and poland from instructors they always said get the weapon hand dont let go and repeated strikes to the face-not try and jam the arm as shown-if this opponent is wired and insane you will not stop him from striking you with other hand, kicking you, biting you raking your eyes-remember the free hand is a weapon-drive through him and beat him senseless- whitewolf
The only problem with "jamming the attacking arm" is that real assailants don't swing in stupid, overly exagerrated movements that would allow you to just step into his body while he's following all the way through with him knife swing (as if the thing is a sledge hammer).
So if you tried this technique you'd be pitting the speed of you moving your entire body forward against his hand returning.
If it doesn't work against an opponent who is moving at 100% speed, it doesn't work.
Not a bad video at all, just be sure to control that knife when your going down. You almost cut your femoral artery there, but good technique!. *****STARS
once he goes for that back slash, you can use his momentum to also pull him off balance and use your left leg to sweep out his right leg, then slam him facefirst into the ground where you can either put him down softly and control that arm or you can also fall down onto his shoulder in an attempt to dislocate it/break bones/tear tendons in the shoulder.
This is one of the better techniques here on Youtube, I like it. But there are some points I don't like. A little knife is no baseball-bat, if he's quick on the follow-up backhand or stab, you jam your body straight into the blade. There should be some sort of checking the knife hand involved.
Also when you wrestle the guy to the ground, the knive is VERY close to vital areas as thigh-artery and balls. How about putting your knee on his arm at 6:25, break it and ellbow him to kingdom come?
i wouldnt recommend taking on someone with a blade...after the first swing...if it missed and if you are in the open... i would be gone like the wind...and because im a runner i will in all likelihood outpace my attacker.
There are plenty of times when running isn't an option: You're in a blind alley, or you're with your wife or children who couldn't keep up if you ran, or you're rescuing the person who was originally attacked.
I study wing chun, and my Sifu recommends just that...you run! If by some chance you are trapped and must fight the only technique he recommends is you take off your shoe before the attacker gets to close and you're not able to do so. Your shoe will act as some what of a buckler (if you're wearing the right shoe, nothing like a dress shoe or high heels) From their you can only hope that you are able to out fox your opponent enough to escape. Never try to disarm unless death is riding you.
Horrible outcome at best. Now I know... control the attacking limb, " defang the snake" blah blah blah... I just think you can do much better then that. It looks from the moment of your straight arm take down he 's going to carve out your Femorl Artery and or take your manhood. Sure you may have fractured his arm, but the aggressor is gonna be the one who walks away, not so lucky for you. We use butter knives, there cheap, safer, and there's nothing like training with cold steel.
@RazryadWarrior If you are training with cold steel, you don't benefit from using full force with the knife. We train with a rubber knife that is rounded (the sharp tip is completely cut off and is made like an ice cream ball). Do you know how much it hurts if someone stabs you with a sharp rubber knife? Rubber knife = full force. More discovery.
David I see u applied some wrestling technique for your disarming. You first have to get to the snake or knife and your 2 on 1 app is not going to work bud. Against an amateur knife practicioner u are going to get stabbed or cut. Lets hope u and your students don't face any. Use an aluminum blade against someone who knows what they're doing and gauge the results without students being present.
sorry, I meant Commando Krav Maga, i just accidentally mis spelled it! Just get a training knife and see if this techniques really works if somebody really agressively attacks you that is the true test.
IMHO one plus with this defense is the controlling of the offending limb, what I disagree with is going to the ground, an alternative would be to destroy the offending limb .....while controlling controlling it...tapi tapi is the last thing you want to do because you have no control of the knife hand..... again just my humble opinion
this is for street fighting self defense. I havent heard of a Martial Artist practitioner of ANY STYLE stooping so low as to attack someone on the street and dishonor their school. But A low-life criminal on the other hand,
Anything elaborate like an armbar takedown works if and only if you have a clear strength or technical advantage. He's a big guy, built like a football player. The moves he does wont work for a small figured girl walking home... The faster you can reach the final locking position of a takedown; the more successful it will be.
@TheMacSan You really think a small figured girl can't win? In the news here, a small figured girl has managed to run away from 3 harassers. Yes, three!!! And she thanked her Martial Arts for it on the news.
@LeBadman Lol, save your shit-talking for 4chan, kid. You don't know shit about shit, and you don't rate to talk with the adults if all you do is imitate a parrot. You're boring, kid.
I study MMA and we recently did knife defense and believe me when I say this will not work. Too many videos show you how to avoid and slap away, not securing the knife or knife arm. I must admit I agree with most of what people are saying on here, the effectiveness of this working in real life situation is 20-30% max. You should ALWAYS secure the knife arm IMMEDIATELY. Ultimately, the best option is to sprint and attract attention, only fight if it's your last option.
@gremlin05 That is the perfect defense against a knife....Fighting a man toe to toe with a knife is suicide, I dont care how good people think they are at eskrima, even knife "experts" say 80% of the time you fight a man with a knife, you will die.
@gremlin05 So everybody always wants to run away, damn right! but what if you are in a position where you can't run?Like your girl is with you or you find yourself cornered are you going to run up the wall? why not take in as many techniques that you can? even if they are opinion based i try to put as many tools in my bag so to say as i can! thank you for the video!
Great video in practice, on the street though..? I think this is an awesome idea for unarmed citizens, from an officer perspective we're trained to shoot someone with a knife. This is solid training though as anyone who has taken knife defense will tell you, you may not have time to get your gun out of the holster before being fileted...
Great thechinque I have 35 years of training as well as 3 years as a guardian angel as well as a few years of cleaning up drug buildings this is a good solid move very nice.
Dawsie dude. i would NOT grab that knife unless i was completely out of options. cause unlike your training partner, a guy on the street is gonna yank on that thing and you will lose that hand. also, knifekali there is no such thing as giving your attacker too much credit. you MUST control that knife arm the ENTIRE time! The instant you let go you're getting stabbed.
great tech. my only change would be to grab the blade. when facing a knife you get cut, simple as that. secure the lower arm, grab the knife and twist out. i get cut every time i demonstrate it but it is effective. good job dave.
While the technique is valid, personally, I thought you missed a number of opportunities to inject your own strikes. You give too much credit to the attacker. From the armbar position, you can stun him with an uppercut and prior to taking him to the ground feed him your elbow. Make your life easy and stop relying completely on grappling.
You can clearly see the sparring partner not even TRYING to cut the instructor... hmm...

He will drop the knife once your fingers are in his eyes!

this is very and it needs years of training and rutine same as a "feeling for bodys". its good vid 5*. but dont forget, if you dont have years of training in martial arts, just run, take care of your life

im just smiling about those ppl that are saying "not good.wont work.and all such". the vid is a good showup of elemental and basic trainingtekniques. i trained years martial arts and i see here some stuff that saved me more than once my life.btw i work as a security guard in a lot of clubs.

this vid is actually not bad. I use some of the same defenses in my school. screw the haters

If you are attacked by an idiot with a knife, and put in a life and death you have two options, disarm or die. You will get cut most of the time,
masters0alive I agree with, a belt as a strap if you have time, or anything in your enviroment, just don't stand there and do nothing!! I train here in highpoint ppc. his techniques work !!!
mweagle777 1 year ago
interesting-but-when i took lessons in greece and poland from instructors they always said get the weapon hand dont let go and repeated strikes to the face-not try and jam the arm as shown-if this opponent is wired and insane you will not stop him from striking you with other hand, kicking you, biting you raking your eyes-remember the free hand is a weapon-drive through him and beat him senseless- whitewolf
oldsgtmajusmc 2 years ago
not a good idea to want to get on the ground with a person armed with a knife. Too much can happen and he may have a partner you don't know about.
jmnewbern 2 years ago
The only problem with "jamming the attacking arm" is that real assailants don't swing in stupid, overly exagerrated movements that would allow you to just step into his body while he's following all the way through with him knife swing (as if the thing is a sledge hammer).
So if you tried this technique you'd be pitting the speed of you moving your entire body forward against his hand returning.
If it doesn't work against an opponent who is moving at 100% speed, it doesn't work.
swordofmanjushri 2 years ago
Not a bad video at all, just be sure to control that knife when your going down. You almost cut your femoral artery there, but good technique!. *****STARS
TASolutions 2 years ago
once he goes for that back slash, you can use his momentum to also pull him off balance and use your left leg to sweep out his right leg, then slam him facefirst into the ground where you can either put him down softly and control that arm or you can also fall down onto his shoulder in an attempt to dislocate it/break bones/tear tendons in the shoulder.
whitie1987 2 years ago
IMO, knife disarms are risky at best and at worst suicidal.
Having said that, the knife disarm shown in the video isnt bad. Ive seen a lot worse.
streetdawgfighter 2 years ago
This is one of the better techniques here on Youtube, I like it. But there are some points I don't like. A little knife is no baseball-bat, if he's quick on the follow-up backhand or stab, you jam your body straight into the blade. There should be some sort of checking the knife hand involved.
Also when you wrestle the guy to the ground, the knive is VERY close to vital areas as thigh-artery and balls. How about putting your knee on his arm at 6:25, break it and ellbow him to kingdom come?
BenX74 2 years ago
i wouldnt recommend taking on someone with a blade...after the first swing...if it missed and if you are in the open... i would be gone like the wind...and because im a runner i will in all likelihood outpace my attacker.
ISinisterI 2 years ago
There are plenty of times when running isn't an option: You're in a blind alley, or you're with your wife or children who couldn't keep up if you ran, or you're rescuing the person who was originally attacked.
greggriffith 2 years ago

RazryadWarrior 2 years ago
@RazryadWarrior If you are training with cold steel, you don't benefit from using full force with the knife. We train with a rubber knife that is rounded (the sharp tip is completely cut off and is made like an ice cream ball). Do you know how much it hurts if someone stabs you with a sharp rubber knife? Rubber knife = full force. More discovery.
LeBadman 7 months ago
David I see u applied some wrestling technique for your disarming. You first have to get to the snake or knife and your 2 on 1 app is not going to work bud. Against an amateur knife practicioner u are going to get stabbed or cut. Lets hope u and your students don't face any. Use an aluminum blade against someone who knows what they're doing and gauge the results without students being present.
MonroePaintball 2 years ago
sorry, I meant Commando Krav Maga, i just accidentally mis spelled it! Just get a training knife and see if this techniques really works if somebody really agressively attacks you that is the true test.
bennyc100 2 years ago
in krav, would we use an inside defense during the initial diagnol slice? or would we dodge it and then parry?
lazawrcat666 2 years ago
This is by far the worst knife defense technique I have ever seen!!! Try this in real life and you will most likely get killed!!!
bennyc100 2 years ago
benny,
I see comments here from people with decades of experience who say it's a great defense, and they offer reasons as to why.
People who have dissed the defense don't offer any alternatives.
Can you give us a link to better knife defenses?
greggriffith 2 years ago
look up knife tapping, or kali, or commando kav maga
bennyc100 2 years ago
IMHO one plus with this defense is the controlling of the offending limb, what I disagree with is going to the ground, an alternative would be to destroy the offending limb .....while controlling controlling it...tapi tapi is the last thing you want to do because you have no control of the knife hand..... again just my humble opinion

Anything elaborate like an armbar takedown works if and only if you have a clear strength or technical advantage. He's a big guy, built like a football player. The moves he does wont work for a small figured girl walking home... The faster you can reach the final locking position of a takedown; the more successful it will be.
TheMacSan 2 years ago
@TheMacSan You really think a small figured girl can't win? In the news here, a small figured girl has managed to run away from 3 harassers. Yes, three!!! And she thanked her Martial Arts for it on the news.
LeBadman 7 months ago
@LeBadman I am a martial artist, too. Take note of the words "Technical advantage."
Also, what you said is somewhat off topic. If you don't know about a topic, don't bother regurgitating what you hear. It's droll.

Great video! Best knife defense I've seen on youtube.
ssbreon 2 years ago
He talks sense, but this is like a movie rehearsal.
I have no faith in any techniques taught in slow motion and based on hypothetical situations.
Most knife attacks I've witnessed or experienced involves 2 or more attackers. You do not want to get locked up in a situation like that.
Best defense is to escape and run, and make a lot of noise to attract attention, yet so few teachers even talk about it.

badger09876 2 years ago
Great video in practice, on the street though..? I think this is an awesome idea for unarmed citizens, from an officer perspective we're trained to shoot someone with a knife. This is solid training though as anyone who has taken knife defense will tell you, you may not have time to get your gun out of the holster before being fileted...

Great Video! Some of the most useful stuff on the tube. There's a lot of suicidal ideas out there, but this is very practical.
wilowhisp 3 years ago
Dawsie dude. i would NOT grab that knife unless i was completely out of options. cause unlike your training partner, a guy on the street is gonna yank on that thing and you will lose that hand. also, knifekali there is no such thing as giving your attacker too much credit. you MUST control that knife arm the ENTIRE time! The instant you let go you're getting stabbed.
ninja0133 3 years ago
great tech. my only change would be to grab the blade. when facing a knife you get cut, simple as that. secure the lower arm, grab the knife and twist out. i get cut every time i demonstrate it but it is effective. good job dave.
Dawsiedawg 3 years ago
While the technique is valid, personally, I thought you missed a number of opportunities to inject your own strikes. You give too much credit to the attacker. From the armbar position, you can stun him with an uppercut and prior to taking him to the ground feed him your elbow. Make your life easy and stop relying completely on grappling.
knifekali 3 years ago
Possible, but you've got to be damn quick. Still better than most of the stuff on youtube.
