Every rugby fan needs to remember they have all watched differrent games to other people and may have caught different views of their 'speedster'', this means everyone has a different opinion...no problems, lets just try to get the old "half time sprint race" back at the world cup matches like we did as kids!!! Maybe the bookies could have a go at running some bets...I mean just for fun of course (not)
You are missing 4 of the fastest: Brian Habana, Jaco Reinach, Ray Mordt, Carel Du Plessis. Which means, you dont know shit about the fastest men in rugby.
has anyone ever payed attention to the refs? those guys are crazy fast aswell keeping up with those top athletes trying to see wether they scored or not .. just saying :P
Rod Davies from the Reds has the current fastest 100m times on paper, as ex-Australian champion in both 100m and 200m, also fastest ARB 40m sprint times.
Missing 2 clips that I can think of, oh looking at the date (april 2010) Robbie Fruen on Defense for Canterbury and saw a clip of a ref ripping up the sideline faster than the winger :)
Jeff Wilson definitely deserves a mention as well. The time in Dunedin where he chases down Joe Roth who had a 15 meter head start was unreal. Fastest in my opinion was Vunibaka. Never saw an actual time but he's a player that made so called speedsters look slow.
Game involving Tonderai need a speed limit, also I haven't seen anyone move faster than Rupeni in his final clip against France. I would of retired from rugby if I was his opposite winger that game.
Rupeni had probably the broadest range of natural talents with the ball in hand. Cullen the most amazing, with Robinson and Williams right up there. Lomu is a bulldozer, it didnt matter if you got near him, he would murder you slow or fast its up to you how you wish to hit the grass. Habana, Tonderai...speed...speed speed, but as we all know, speed isnt everything on the footy field.
By the way I took the time to look at your first answer, so Offiah would've topped in France alone by : Costes (10"6, official), Carrat (10"34, official, he was an athletic champ as well as rugger), and esp. Patrick Estève (10"6 for his first-ever and prob. last 100m, starting wrong-footed!) ; Prob. also a guy from the 20's who did 11" on LAWN
I think Estève had the potential to make between 10"2 and 10"1
@ericmarseille2 haha what you have to remember is that offiah was a lot later than these speedsters and times recorded with a stop watch are very unreliable. But cheers for the info.
@usamabutt12345 Yeah sure but for Estève, although he was chronoed manually, he was racing against Sella who had already been chronoed under 11" officially ; result : 10"9 for Sella, 10"6 for Estève, so it was reliable ; in fact they were chronoed by some French sprint coach and official, and he declared that Estève could've trimmed 0.4 to 0.5 out of his time eventually.
By the way the 10"34 of Carrat are absolutely official, he was a sprinter don't forget.
@ericmarseille2 I remember both Esteve & Costes playing in New Zealand. Esteve was the better footballer no doubts, a beautifully balanced runner. From memory, Costes seemed faster, like a greyhound.
At his best, and when not hamstrung, JJ Williams was extremely quick too. Jaco Reinach from South Africa was another trained sprinter who was lightning quick.
France Lagisquet, Esteve and Carrat, England Underwoods, Varndell, J.Robinson, Sth Africa Carel Du Plessis, Chavanga, Ngwenya Habana, Wales Gerald Davies, Ieuan Evans, Nigel Walker, Shane Williams, Ozzy John Fleet, Ian Williams ex wallaby, Fiji Caucaunibuca, Bobo, Vidiri, Delasau, Tom Mitchell, Tonga J.Mafileo,NZ Terry Wright, Rokocoko, Howlett, Rico Gear, Lomu, Cullen, Roger Randle, Brad Fleming, Dan Parkinson, Stowers, Masaga...Speed demons but MARTIN OFFIAH would blitz them all!!!!
@ericmarseille2 Cheers for the stats, however I think you may have misheard. A man who runs 10.2 for the 100m in the 50s or 60s would would not play rugby as he would only be 0.2 seconds off the World Record. Vunibaka was very fast, he features in this video. Offiah's personal best time is 10.70, the fastest is Nigel Walker (an olympic hurdler with a wind-assisted 10.35 who played for Wales)
@usamabutt12345 Yes exactly, the guy was an absolute champ, but you know it happens in rugby, Esteve never considered athletics ('tis for commie countries, he said), although he could have been a champ, Howlett and Chahvanga were national champs in their youths, and Carrat chose rugby cause he was disgusted not to be selected for the olympics
@usamabutt12345 That's the problem I don't remember it ; he was an Aussie, and by the time France had so much fast rugby players (Sella Lagisquet Costes and Estève), at the dawn of the 80's, I read an article in French magazine l'equipe on the fastest men ever in rugby (they were comparing), and that Aussie was touted as the fastest rugger ever by far, quoting 10"2, with a 50's looking picture. I remember the guy looked like the perfect aussie surfer, blond hair and all.
Not so much as a tribute to the fastest men in rugby as to the fastest tries (although some of the fastest guys here)
For France : Sébastien Carrat (10"34), Costes (10"6), Sella (10"9), Heymans was fast in his youth but don't know his record ; the fastest was perhaps Patrick Estève : 10"6 starting wrong-footed and for his first-ever 100m...
I also know about Ngwenya, Habana and Chavanga (must be both at 10"33), and Doug Howlett who was youth NZ Champ on the distance...Have you others?
@GTa240sx check the video's description. It's Ngwenya. he's playing for biarritz right now... he did something similar to shane williams not that long ago
These videos are good man, but vary it a little, you use the same clips in all 3 videos with a few new ones in each, gets boring after a while. But other than that, good videos man (Y) good to see the obvious british talent here :P
notice that Fijian born players make up most of the list??
