When mass media only refers to white folks as General Authority on Haiti it stifles Haitian growth. Paul Farmer should secede this voice to Haitians who r as capable of speaking our people's struggle. We r not without intellectuals or leaders but the overshadowing force is too great. The lazy journalism looks 4 a repetition of the same sources over & over. The scope with which we examine Haiti must also change. Utube General Authority, a Haitian novel, make room for the voice of the people.
As an RN I can say that training and paying community health care workers can make entire communities more healthy. The worker is trained, so takes better care of her own family.
She has money in her pocket which boosts the local economy.
Oh nurses are weeners and will never change the healthcares system. THey are too damned busy cutting each others legs out from one another. I know. I have been an RN 22 years!! With it mainly women forget it!!
Yes, I read that today. The US government is flying hundreds of haitians to the US and paying for their healthcare yet they can't do that for their own citizens.
Lets not mistake the hesitant reception by US states of critical cases from Haiti for a commitment to free medical care for the world: if this were true it would indeed by a revolutionary change! Cuba shows this is possible by providing medical training and primary health care: there were already hundreds of Cuban-trained Haitian docs in Haiti before the earthquake hit.
@mnm1972 It's not with government or taxpayer money, its from donations. People don't believe that the poor are in the US too, so those charities are ignored. At least, thats what was portrayed in Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder.
the USA administrations are fucked up, supporting dictators and not democracies, and allowing the rich to control what happens in the world. The rocks in the water will one day know what it feels like to be rocks in the sun. And if you disagree you're a worthless piece of crap!
MD and PhD from Harvard and a MacArthur Genius Award.....yeah, Paul Farmer get a brain. YouTube users like innaginger know more about the world than you do.
@ucbpa: Maybe you should read the book "Mountains beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder. It chronicles his life. He grew up poor picking oranges with Hatian migrant workers in Florida, which is maybe why he knows first-hand the issues faced by this population. He attended Harvard medical school WHILE working in Haiti the entire time. He is the only student to ever finish Harvard and not actually attend classes there...AND I believe that he was even the valedictorian of his class.
@ucbpa I actually went to Haiti on mission trip with dr.s and stayed on Zamni Lasante compound. I was able to meet Dr. Farmer who is very smart but has done more for Haitians they you could dream about. Saying that He doesn't know anything about the world is naive and ignorant....How these people live is week to week is not even in our vocabulary. Yet he has spent his life working with the poorest of the poor and weakest of the weak.
ive never read a book before but for my college course i must read mountains beyond mountains and wow it is a great novel i cant belive the things this man has accomplished and has gone through its almost fiction he is a saint
perhaps that's because they live in a society where females have less oppurtunity for work of their own. it's not sexist, it's appropriate for that society.

Some U.S. citizens are being denied health care but then they are giving health care to non citizens for free.

PIH takes care of anyone who can get to the clinic. His young staff is from Harvard
learning while they help. The patients are
never told they must pay. Paul is worked on getting
clean water for the people near his clinic.
He has his staff do follow up home visits
of patients. House calls! This important for
TB and HIV to make sure the meds are bieng taken correctly. PIH has been invited to work in Peru, Eastren Europe and Rawanda.

His clinics are great. The patients pay nothing and the staff go out of their way to assist you.

Actually he charged women and children nothing and charged men eighty cents in Haiti. If that's not sexist, I don't know what is.
