@any Iowans commenting here "How dare he/does he think Iowans're idiots?"
I can only imagine that, since Iowa has a special place in the electoral process that Pawlenty thinks there's a wider spread of national media there and maybe he's trying to project a Southern lilt (completely unsuccessfully) for people in the South who might hear bits of his speeches? I don't think he thinks y'all are rubes.
And yes I'm a Southerner. And no Pawlenty doesn't sound at all Southern, even in this clip!!
Desperately funny I had to listen 3x and turn up the volume. He should take this act on the road, oh he is ...I'm cracking up. What kind of political/street cred is he going for?
@dizzymasekela I am a Republican, a Midwest native, with roots in the Southern United States (going back to the 1600s) and I do not like a Southern accent. Hillary Clinton did the same thing that TPaw did.
Truth be told... it's a fairly convincing accent (not too overdone) -- at least to my untrained ear. But then again, I'm from central MD, where we have no accent ;)
"I saw another Michael Bay movie, and I said to my ad guy, that's what we need, I reckon. We need more 'splosions! I'm fixin' to 'splode this budget, like it was a dad gum Transformer, ya'l!" - T-Paw Yee haw (pretty much)
@muetter Yeah it sounds British to us - but they mock her for it. I have some friends who live over there and they absolutely hated her for making up her fake accent.
It's one thing to move somewhere else and subtly pick up the accent over the years because I'm sure that's bound to happen, but to just shift into the accent is either Pawlenty trying to "connect" to the Iowa voters or he's mocking them - and being a careful politician, I'm betting he's not mocking them.
Pawlenty is such a creepy dweeb and this clip is awesome but I noticed the same thing with Obama the other day in this clip: /watch?v=SA9KC8SMu3o. Listen how he says "orgainize" and "picket line" with a Southern accent in South Carolina. I was kind of amazed.

Midwest 'widows,' eh? Oh please. And my tax dollars got to those NPR clowns? Give me a break. Pawlenty's clearly a decent man.

Reason #1 why Republicans suck: They actually like the Southern mush-mouth accent.

I don't get it. What is going through the minds of Pawlenty and his staff when the decision is made to affect a hokey parody of a southern accent?
Do they think that people in Iowa talk like that? Iowa??!?
Did they think that nobody was there with a recording device to make the comparison between Minnesota T-Paw and Mississippi trailer trash T-Paw?
