Okay, one, the cross GUARD is there to GUARD your hand. Two the bulge at the bottom of the hilt is to help keep the sword from slipping out of your hand. three, to fix the lines on the side can be fixed with some black electrical tape or duct tape. lastly, you could "mod" the blade by rapping it in duct tape a few times over to keep the foam from flaking, and help keep it rigid and not break as easily (i have broken a few with my friends)

a better mod would be to cut off the blade (temporarily) stick some fiberglass rods in with the rod already there, then put the blade back on and use industrial strength glue to put it back together (and duct tape). It would make it less bendy.
