Ummm......moron....Goat Island is US land on the other side of the Horseshoe Falls. Do your research. The American side is better because you have the American Falls, but canalso walk up to the Horseshoe Falls. The Candian side only has the far side actually touching the Falls.

Although.... we have to stay on the US side because our passports just expired and we didn't have enough time to renew them before the trip..... New York and Canada have different things, New York has a ton of hotels, Canada has the Skylon, New York has Six Flags, Canada has Marineland (if they're still in business). Each has different perks. Canada has more of the tourist-y stuff like Ripley's Haunted House, and all that sorta stuff. New York has stuff like shopping & art museums in Niagara Falls and in Buffalo which is like 20 minutes away.

Goat Island and Three Sisters Island are great places to go, too.

...Niagara Falls, NY today?Outside attractions: Seneca Niagara Casino, Helicopter Rides, all year round Ice Sledding and Ice Skating Rink, and thats about it lol. Falls attractions:Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, Goat Island, Luna Island, and Three Sisters Island. There is construction of new buildings, new roads, and new attractions currently taken place. We are on our way of being the thriving tourist city it once was. You must go on both sides for the full Niagara Falls experience!

Born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY... The American side consist of the American Falls & the Bridal Veils Falls; the Canadian side consist of the Horseshoe Falls, bigger of the three. On either side you can view all the Falls' at different angels. The American side is good at attractions considering the Falls itself, but as for FUN, the Canadian side all the way. Clifton Hills is amazing! The Seneca Niagara Casino (American) is great and bringing in more money...

@Feerulace :It takes about 7 hours to get from New York City to Niagara Falls, NY. It's up to you if you want to take a bus, it's not uncommon. As far as attractions go, mostly everything is walking distance. You can cross the border on foot (or bike) but you still must have a passport or enhanced drivers license. There's also shuttles, buses, and trolleys to take you around. If you wanted to shop, you could take a cab or metro to shopping centers or the mall. So it's cool.

I've often wondered why does the Canadian side seems to do so much better than the American side.

I live just outside Niagara Falls, NY.

I go to the Canadian side (have been there on occasion) and it seems more lively and thriving.

In Niagara Falls NY, all I mostly see are boarded up shops, decaying buildings, bumpy streets and more importantly, fucking panhandlers that go around begging for money.

What would it take to make Niagara Falls, NY thriving again like it once did.

@Nicksolo85 There are 2 major reasons I think. The first would be that the dollar was lower on the Canadian side for a while so that helped drive many American tourists across the border. The second is that Toronto is close. The Greater Toronto Area has another 6 million potential tourists for the Canadian side.

Goat Island is pretty cool.

People talk about the Seneca-Niagara Casino, but I still have yet to go there. Devil's Hole State Park and Whirlpool State Park are pretty cool. They both come with nice views.

The Factory Outlet Mall also seems like a big tourist destination.

All these places I mentioned are filled with tourists, but I imagine Goat Island and the state parks do better in the warmer part of the year.

The whole "doing better" thing was based around the economy.
