My si fu is teaching me this same form at the moment. If you're in Canada and looking for an authentic Shaolin teacher then please message me. My Si Fu knows this Shaolin monk as well.
the other video is really fluid which is interesting but id say this is still better because he uses the torso muscles more this way- thats how to get more strength with speed
Most Gong Fu temples within China now have confortable western flashing toilet & gas cooker - yes, including Wudang Shan! How tradditional can u get? LOL. "U can pay ur membership in plastic". How tradditional? "For ur training, say hello to the student resource centre - u have punching gloves, shin pads, gym apparatus & training DVD's! How tradditional? U get my point? It's all business now...
If you practice the form using the correct principles, i.e 'liu he' (six harmonies) then the form is true gong fu and can therefore be considered traditional. When the form was written or what form isn't so important. This is a good version of da hong, there are applications for each movement, the strategy is hidden in the order of the form, and shi yong zhi is respecting the six harmonies. What more can you ask of a form? Its not about the exact movements guys. This is how shaolin should be.
I think that the form is traditional not their lifestyle.
From my point of view, its ok to live in a modern way but as long as the traditional forms stay untouched. (This shouldnt be taken as some kind of insult ór such, only my oppinion)
Well then, @ LFJ and everyone out there - how tradditional can one get?? How tradditional can Gong Fu get in a "modern" China & let alone this geeky western world anyway?? In fact, isn't it a traddition that we're too picky and shouldn't it be a good traddition to modernize OLD Gong Fu to fit modern days? Or would "you" rather have it the way round? Smiles.
Currently, I noticed there are two types of Da Hong Quan being practiced around Shaolin temples: That one presented by Shi Yong Zhi and the one Shi De Yang does. I learned the one Shi De Yang teaches. But more primitive and "tradditional" is; Shi Yang Ming's Da Hong Quan - the Pu Bu in it is realy hard and different - the type of Pu Bu seen in some Wudang Nei Jia and Tai Chi.
did you say shi yanming's version is more "primitive" and "traditional"? are you kidding? thats the most modernized version of it there is. he worked it out himself. "primitive"??
There are many variations on Da hong quan practiced at the moment. The difference between this and deyang's form is more in the performance than the broken down movements.
Yan mings version is really NOT a touch on this one. Watch this video again, this is about the best da hong quan you will see, not in terms of beauty but in terms of staying true to the principles of shaolin gong fu. The best is i think /watch?v=HQbZsgJ-pb4&feature=related
@Luohan108 - excellent point. It's the same with Okinawan Karate. If you apply the Principles of the Bubishi and Proper Body Mechanics, you have real Karate-Jutsu. The original concepts were left out of the training when the art was being taught to westerners. These things are being re-integrated by a small handful of practitioners... ;)
Id say that both of them are pretty much the same (with the exception of speed and hardness in the form), they are traditional but performed in their own manner which master Yong Zhi and De Yang have done.
Nice that you can do traditional Da Hong Quan! Thumbs up :D!
well, unaltered in that all the moves are there. but stylistically reworked. you'll notice only those who follow shi yongxin do it like this, because he is trying to standardize the forms so that everyone does them the same way. (which causes loss of technique from separate lineages as many have now come under him)
xiaohongquan as well. they attempt to make it appear more internal so it has an "ancient" look to it.
How is this modern wushu?? Have you ever seen modern wushu? THis guy had loads of power, but the sound was out in this video. Show me a more traditional example of shaolin than this. Look up chang quan if you want to see modern wushu, you will notice the difference.
Master Yong Zhi is without a doubt one of the greats of Shaolin temple, probably the only master to demonstrate Shaolin's true power, I think he's about 48 now! His Qi Xing Quan is phenominal(look at his ding zhou), a true Shaolin Warrior!
@jingwuman i would comment on his confusion but over time realize all the conept of all chinese marital arts are the same goal are the same origins are the same. just aestheticly different
THis is da hong quan by shi yongzhi of jing wu guan near yong tai temple (shaolin). WHere did you manage to get this video? By the way Hong does NOT mean red in this case, it means flood, like with water.
Ah, flood fist, think someone told me that before. Thanks. These are from a series of Ten videos that were out a few years ago, and are apparently not available anymore, so I thought I'd post the demonstrations of the masters, but there is also an instructional part.
wow one of the nicest Hong quan demonstrations I have seen.

it is traditional, superman. but it has been "reworked".

Your right it is traditional, but how has it been reworked? THis is as unaltered a version of da hong quan as i have ever seen anywhere.

"Shaolin monks" = modern Wushu, no other way around
If you want real traditional Shaolin you have to seek for Gu Ru Zhang style or some other few from HongKong and Chinatowns in the USA.
Definitely NOT from any "monk".

That doesn't make any sense.
