Ahh you"re almost there, if you remove the last cylinder sheath you can remove the half with the quick pins in it and align them with the bar and insert the key you want to work, put it back together and poof it works. This way you don"t have to use any tools on the sensitive parts.
Thanks! I didn't have my Dremel at home, so I just pulled the barrel apart and reset 'em manually. Did the trick!! Thanks for the video tho, was very useful in approaching the problem.
So, the short of it is that if you have a PhD in locksmith, a van full of tools for the job, several hours, you can do it with no problems. Otherwise, you're pretty screwed!
@SisterBegonia If by PhD in locksmith you mean no working knowledge of Kwikset locks; and by a van full of tools you mean needle-nose vice grips, a dremel and the tool that came with the lock; and by several hours you mean 1 ... then yes ... you nailed it. :o)
@rh031a - One hour? Really? Wanna bet on that? Have a person who has never done this and has no mechanical aptitude try it and time it. Let's see how long it takes and if it even gets done. I can also argue that it takes only 30 minutes to make a shirt...but that's because I know what to do and have done it plenty of times. If I ask you to do it, I seriously doubt that your success will be the same as mine. I paid someone 80 bucks and got it done in 15 minutes. Cheers!
@SisterBegonia I never said I wasn't mechanically inclined ... I said I had never broken down a lock before and more specifically a Kwikset deadbolt. With regards to my inability to make a shirt ... you have me dead to rights ... don't think I could make one in even an hour ... that is unless you have a YouTube video showing me how. :o)
Sorry this video wasn't of more help to you. Cheers!
Frustrating. Never could get it to work. Am fairly technical, so not sure why - i ground down the dummy key properly, applied proper tension, pushed in the pins, wiggled/pulled/pushed/screamed, you name it...
Am wondering if this applies to my deadbolt/cylinder smartkey or if I have a newer (or older) model.
@huntrm from what i could tell ... depending on your key and how screwed up the reset was ... some can be as simple as 2 wafers while others could prove to be much more difficult. I am sorry it didn't work out for you. You could always take the lock back and get a replacement. :o)
@rh031a Thanks for the response. I ended up taking it to Home Depot, where they have the reset tool for use for free. In examining the inside of the tool, it applies pressure to certain parts of the cylinder, along with the tumblers needing to be in a reset position.
Folks, call your local Lowe's or Home Depot and see if they have the reset tool for use for free. Offering this up as an alternative if you can't get this solution to work.
Thanks for making this video! I was able to use the key I was trying to re-key to (and somehow failed with, resulting in no keys working) in the lock and push in a single wafer set that wasn't dropping...I did not need to grind down a key to the 0 level.
Judging by how difficult it was to reset it once I messed it up I would say they are pretty safe. You can't re-key it unless you have the key that currently unlocks the set so it isn't like anyone can go in and reset it to their key. As long as the current key you have fits in the Kwikset lock you should be good.
stupidk kwikset, happened to me tonight, can't rekey. even tho i followed the instructinos. gona go lowes and get it exchanged, don't care that i bought it 2 yrs ago
Thanks for sharing! It does take a little time but I now have all my locks on the same key. Wouldn't you know it was the last out of 5 that I had to look for this solution. Future note for people doing this, mark your cylinder orientation when extracting the cylinder. I assembled mine upside down and didn't realize it until I installed on the door but it is good enough for now:)
Thanks for taking the time for making and sharing this video. I fixed my kwikset deadbolt by watching your demo....after a guy a Home Depot said it couldn't be done. You and YouTube have proved him wrong ;)
the trick is when you reinsert the cylinder DONT PUT IT IN with your marker lined up put it in a little off to the right this way it does not let the pins fall into the locked position again then u start all over again WHO NEEDS THAT RESET TOOL LOL i dont even have the rekey tool i used a paperclip and grinded both sides of the wire till it woul d fit into the slot LOL n hope i helped a little prolly just confused someone more but once you take it all apart its really not har
PART TWO and then push all the pins in all the way till they click while holding the barrel pieces together also before you take the clip off you could mark the cylinder and barrel with a marker to save the orientation as that confused me a little when i reassembled it but after u push al the pins in till they click then the piece on the side of the barrel is able to be squeezed into the barrrel recess and when u put it in it turns no problem and IS RESET FOR the new key already
hey man good job on this video i was a little anxious at times for you to get to the end but i have a few tips that i learned also 1. i am not a locksmith 2. i am a mechanic ,...ok heres what i learned instead of picking the tumblers with the blank key put the blank in and take the clip off the back of the cylinder and as it comes out squeeze the metal pin on side of barrel as well as hold the barrel together <its in two pieces
@rh031a Hi, I was thinking of replacing my lock with a Level 3 Kwikset but I wanted to keep my keys but I am not sure if the Smart Key access system is safe. Do you think it is safe?

Oh, and it took me about 20 minutes once I got the barrel out (hardest part, what a PITA without their special tool!)
