I know I've seen the scene with the giant walrus chasing scientists in another flic. Was it used as stock in other films? (Maybe an Amicus Sci Fi, From the UK?)
@dukes0916 I wouldn't doubt it. Footage from Toho's movies like Godzilla, Rodan, or War in Space have appeared in multiple tv shows ... specially in the late 80's and early 90's, from what I remember.
GORATH is supposed to be a Netron Star, just like in the Japanese Scie fi movie from 1956 (first Japenese Sci-Fi mvie in color): WARNING FROM SPACE, which my ex-girlfriend also agreed was a great film.
continued. When I rented it guess what? No walrus!Video transfer itself was good and the box featured a snazzy mylar-chrome background with a picture of the asteroid Gorath on it. Even the tag line was great-"5000 times the mass of Earth-and its heading right towards us". I`m sorry I didn`t make thec store owner an offer on it. I DO have a version on video that I taped back in `86, probably the last time it played on local NY-NJ tv. Guess what? No walrus!
Lot of controversy on this film. Its NOT a monster movie! The giant walrus was added to the finished film for the American market, but it was deleted for a more serious sci-fi story. From what I understand, Japanese versions feature th walrus.I saw it as a 11 year old in a theatrical release-no walrus. Also, when showed on TV in the 70s and 80s, no walrus again. Film itself is good and features some 1st rate model animation and a good musical score. It was at my video rental store in latre 80s.
@loufalce The walrus (for some reason called "Magma"...) was added at the insistence of producer Tomoyuki Tanaka. He felt that the presence of a monster would boost box office totals (he did the same thing with The Mysterians and Atragon). When the film was brought to America, the producers here felt the movie would work without the walrus, so they cut it out. And I agree with you on the special effects. Eiji Tsuburaya's best work in sci-fi, as far as I'm concerned.
I would rather see (I haven't seen this movie) foreign movies, such as these kaiju movies subtitled rather than the lousy dubbed (as a primarily English speaker, I've always resented dubbing even as a youngster.
I am so thankful you have posted this video. I knew it as "Gorak", back in 1973 in Cuba when i was 10 years old. I watched it at the theatre in Japanese with Spanish subtitles at least 10 times. Brings back memories of my older brother and mother (now deceased) who relentlessly accompanied me to the theatre time after time. I have looked for it for years on the net and finally i have found it. Gorath is the name of the red planet that destroys everything in its way! Thanks.
This title was slated for release as an MGM Midnite Movie, but nothing ever seemed to come of that. A widescreen DVD in Japanese with English subtitles is available online, if you're willing to search for it. This is one of my all-time favorites.
A Japanese widescreen edition with English subtitles is available, if you're willing to hunt for it. This movie is dated, but I love it. The studio is Toho, who made all those wonderful Godzilla films.
I really wish they would put this out on a Region-1 DVD, since it's one of the few Honda movies I haven't seen. I mean, I don't even recall seeing on TV or anything when I was a kid!
I used to watch this on Channel 9 WOR-TV in New York, in the 1970s and 80s. I recorded the shorteer American Version on VHS in early 1984. I bought the Japanese version with English subtitles DVD a couple years ago at CHILLER THEATRE convention in Secaucus. Stunning on a 50-inch plasma, with 6.1 Dolby and an Altec-Lansing powered subwoofer...
All the NY stations used to cut the films, most of the films. The films I just LOVE. You need to go to CHILLER THEATRE model toy and film expo, which is held twice a year in North New Jersey, last one was Halloween weekend, next one is in april. Check the Chiller Theatre expo site. It's like a trip to sci-fi and horror-HEAVEN. Rock onward.
On channel 9 WOR-TV, there was never any "weird white fog" on ANY of the model shots, which were classic FX maesto Eiji Tsuburaya, at his world class- best, complete with the submersion of Tokyo, and thermonuclear rockets clustered at the south pole, blasting the Earth out of the way of Gorath (Nibiru? Planet X?). Great Saturday night fun, just add popcorn, pizza, and root-beer. Go to Chiller Theatre convention, and there are dealers that have EVER single Japanese SCI FI and horror ever made.
I watched and recorded Gorath off channel 9 WOR-TV in New York, in early 1984. There were no "fogged" scenes at all! No japanese science fiction or any other movie for that matter, has EVER had "fogged" scenes. Non-sequiter...
They are not fogged like today when the censor something. They added matte paintings of some clouds over some of the arctic scenes during the construction of rockets. Now. it is possible that this was already part of the original film (which I confess I havent seen) but I had read somewhere (most likely G-Fan) that this was added to the american cut to hide some models that did not look convincing.
I own the US VHS cassette of Gorath from the early eighties. I will check it out.
I own the Japanes DVD of Gorath, a VHS tpape of the Japanese version of it that I got at a SCI FI convention in the 1990s, and a VHS tape I copied off of WOR-TV in ealry 1984. No fogginess yet, just goodtime japanese sci-fi fun. Merry Christmas. The story of Gorath opens at Christmastime in Japan.
I am afraid I must concede. My VHS copy of the US version of does not have the whited out spots. Though, strangely, I recall seeing them. It might be that it was a different US cut of another japanese movie. But I cant imagine which.
And I am certain I read an article mentioning it. Of course, it is possible that the whited out part only made it to some prints or that they are cropped off on

But I know I saw something like that. God, I hate that.
I'm sorry you had to see that, or you had memories of seeing that, which must have been a terrible or butchered print of GORATH, or some other great Japanese Sci Fi like BATTLE INOUTER SPACE, or THE MYSTERIANS. Japanese SF influenced Geore Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron, etc. Now we LIVE in an age of wonders, both scientific and human...

@loufalce I love this movie since 1969. I taped it from Channel 9 in New york in the early-mid 1980s, then a couple years later, in 1985 or 86 I bought the VHS Japanese version which was copied from laserdisc at a sci-fi convention in New York, and a few years ago at CHILLER THEATER conventioon in New Jersey, I bought the widescreed DVD, with english (Eigo) subtitles. It has the monster, Magma, the giant walrus, and everthing, the laser-shooting VTOL spaceplane, and all the goodies!

I remember seeing the English dub on tv back in the 70s and was very disappointed that the scenes with Magma (which I read about in FAMOUS MONSTERS) were cut out. Kenji Sahara looks like a Japanese Charlie Sheen!
A couple of things I noticed when I first saw "GORATH" (on Prism Video, now out of print, sadly), was the ULTRAMAN connections (even though this movie predated ULTRA-Q!!):
The actor who portrays ITOH in ULTRAMAN, plays a semi-serious version, also named ITOH, here. Also, this was the first time that the VTOL (V-ertical T-ake O-ff and L-anding) was ever seen---
and the HARRIER Jet (which debuted in Grenada!!)wasn't even invented yet!!
The USAF owes a debt to Eiji Tsuburaya-sensei, 'visionary'.
DONE. You seen "NIGHT OF THE LEPUS" (a.k.a. 'DeForrest Kelly/BONES McCoy' vs. The Giant Rabbits')? HA HA!!!! It's out on MGM video. Better grab a 6-pack of Bud before you watch it. HA HA!!
I'm surprised that Media Blasters or Sony/Classic Video doesn't want to release any of the other "non-Gojira" films on US DVD,such as "GORATH", "THE HUMAN VAPOR", "BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE", "THE H-MAN"(still freaks me out after all this time!!), and..shame of shame.."MOTHRA"--among others.
MGM owns these (Gorath, Human Vapor and The Last War) so Media Blasters can't release them. Apparently the film elements of the English versions are falling apart so I wouldn't hold your breath. Sony owns Mothra, Battle In Outer Space and H-Man and those are supposed to come out next year.
MGM also owned (via RKO) "The Mysterians". BUT, TOHO took it back, thus giving Media Blasters the opening (besides, Toho likes Media Blasters AND Classic Video for treating their properties with respect). So, if John Sirabella gets the licenses from Toho (and since all 3 films are from "Honda/Tsuburaya/Tanaka"), it'll work.
As for Sony, since Classic Video IS Sony, it's a no-brainer. And, a Deluxe MOTHRA would look damn good on MY DVD player.

The German name for Gorath is "UFO´s vernichten die Erde".

@spacerider007 About three years Gorath had its release in Germany, coupled with three other sf-flicks. The name of the DVD-box is "Science Fiction Classic Box Vol. 1"
The German name for Gorath is "UFO´s vernichten die Erde".
This release includes the the kaiju Magma. In the original German cinema-version Magma was not to be seen.

I wished I could get this on DVD in the US. It's one of the few TOHO Sci Fi movies I've never seen.

That walrus Maguma is weird. For the record, the scenes with it were deleted from the American cut of the film.
