@Lasershamm The plane is landing, you might be thinking of car spoilers, they work a little different.

Just watch any videos on youtube of a plane taking off or landing. The air goes over the wing and pushes on the flaps to go up... image standing on a rake it's a similar design. Then for landing the air that goes under the wing hits the downward flaps causing the nose of the plane to go up.

@JohnMorrisonMusic You are both along the right track, but not quite correct. A wings flaps and its ailerons are two different things. Ailerons are at the tips of the wings and move opposite to each other to create a rolling motion to the left or right. Flaps actually change the overall curvature of the wing and while creating more drag, are used to produce more lift at slower speeds allowing aircraft to do things like reduce their landing speed as much as possible.
