I knew this song from the Doctor Demento radio show around 1980. Your version sounds closest to the one I remember on the air, thanks for the perfomance!
so this is the original from 1893? I presume the original partition is for piano and voice? I wonder who changed the music to the other widely known version.
The man in the balloon is definitely there. There are obviously some modern verses that have been added which I haven't caught up with. All part of the folk process. Thanks for your comment.
Don't know that verse. There are lots of different verses added by various people. They certainly didn't have atomic bombs when the song was first written!
ya, it goes something like this(i cant remember if this is correct or not): one day the a-bomb fell, then the h-bomb fell, killed 5000000000 people with no one left to tell, then the rescue crews found something very(i think there is another 'very' in there)queer, an old yellow cat in a box on the ground.

No, I doubt it's the original version. It's just one of many versions you can find.

There are several versions of this, as with most folk music.

Final verse:-
But its ghost came back to tell you all about it;
Yes its ghost came back, between you and I.
Its ghost came back, may be you will doubt it,
But its ghost came back just to bid em all goodbye.

Anyone know of a version with the original minstrel words and including the cat;s eventual demise?
Daddymccourt 2 years ago
In all the versions I've heard the cat is indestructible.
raymondcrooke 2 years ago
While de cat lay a sleeping an a resting one day,
Round came an organ grinder an he began to play;
De cat lookd around awhile an kinder raised her head
When he played Tarahdahboomdarah, an de cat dropped dead.
the next verse goes on to tell about the ghostof the cat

So it came back even though it was dead! I've never heard that verse. Thanks for sharing it.

to also add you didn't sing the verse about the US rocket going into space or the man in the ballon (Cisco Houston)
bu there is of course more than one way to skin a cat and more than one version of the song
most every new person who sang this tried to come up with a new way to kill the cat
(everthing has been done to that cat once or twice)

I think the accompanying audio program(or weekly radio show?) was lead by a Miss Epstein?

You shouldn't, if you're Australian. I've never met a Yank who didn't love Aussies, even if he'd never met one.
