  • jest wpozo

  • I knew this song from the Doctor Demento radio show around 1980. Your version sounds closest to the one I remember on the air, thanks for the perfomance!

  • Clever!!!

  • gay#

  • thanks so much I havent heard this since 1970

    good-on-ya mate

  • You're welcome. Glad you liked it.

  • so this is the original from 1893? I presume the original partition is for piano and voice? I wonder who changed the music to the other widely known version.

  • No, I doubt it's the original version. It's just one of many versions you can find.

  • my favourite :] i took a tape of you singing this to primary school in grade 1 and my whole class did free dance to it. :]

  • I'm honoured. Thanks for telling me that.

  • I heard this song at a camp and it was a different version.

  • There are several versions of this, as with most folk music.

  • Final verse:-

    But its ghost came back to tell you all about it;

Yes its ghost came back, between you and I.

Its ghost came back, may be you will doubt it,

But its ghost came back just to bid em all goodbye.

  • Thanks for that.

  • Anyone know of a version with the original minstrel words and including the cat;s eventual demise?

  • In all the versions I've heard the cat is indestructible.

  • While de cat lay a sleeping an a resting one day,

    Round came an organ grinder an he began to play;

De cat lookd around awhile an kinder raised her head

When he played Tarahdahboomdarah, an de cat dropped dead.

the next verse goes on to tell about the ghostof the cat

  • So it came back even though it was dead! I've never heard that verse. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Thanks Raymond!! I love Cats and I love your version of this classic!! Some new versed I havnt heard till now to!!

  • Thanks, Dan. This cat is not as lovable as yours though!

  • A Comic Negro Absurdity

  • NOBODY CAN DO IT BETTER THAN MITCH =) ahah

  • to also add you didn't sing the verse about the US rocket going into space or the man in the ballon (Cisco Houston)

bu there is of course more than one way to skin a cat and more than one version of the song

most every new person who sang this tried to come up with a new way to kill the cat

(everthing has been done to that cat once or twice)

  • The man in the balloon is definitely there. There are obviously some modern verses that have been added which I haven't caught up with. All part of the folk process. Thanks for your comment.

  • I had a cat like that once. Great job as always.

  • anybody that knows what this song is is ok with me=it does not matter how you sing it or play it it is a great song=we are a diffrent bread :o)

  • u missed one verse, something about a atomic bomb

  • Don't know that verse. There are lots of different verses added by various people. They certainly didn't have atomic bombs when the song was first written!

  • ya, it goes something like this(i cant remember if this is correct or not): one day the a-bomb fell, then the h-bomb fell, killed 5000000000 people with no one left to tell, then the rescue crews found something very(i think there is another 'very' in there)queer, an old yellow cat in a box on the ground.

  • Love it.......so many versions.....yours is uplifting and fast.....love it....thanky..

  • Thanks. Your version is same as in my primary school songbook. I remember getting very excited singing this fav of mine back then.

I think the accompanying audio program(or weekly radio show?) was lead by a Miss Epstein?

  • nice to hear the original, thanks!

  • That was great!

  • Reminds me of old Lee Moore's TCCB from my childhood. Well done H.S.M.

  • awesome! :D

  • AWW I LOVE IT

  • Jeez! Diablo Gato.

  • He's Australian (right?) but I'm American...jerk lol

    Love this song though!

  • i hate americans! but i like you

  • You shouldn't, if you're Australian. I've never met a Yank who didn't love Aussies, even if he'd never met one.

  • im portuguese

  • That cat is honestly evil! I would hate to be given that Bastardly cat!!!

  • the chords are Em-D-C7-B7
