And I do agree with you, although I would say that in addition to a (trashy/slutty) image, it's also about a SOUND. I think someone like Nick Minaj like Rihanna is a perfect example - it's all about having a certain sound (right now it seems to be 90's Eurodance mixed with an urban beat) and a repetitious hook. Nobody does proper melodies anymore.
