Even a regular writter for a show cant garenty their employment beyond the current season, if that.

So, like authors of books, they get paid royalties.

Seems fair to me. After all, the writting is really the main thing that makes a show. To get just 0.3% per dvd, and nothing from online seems unfair when studios make millions.

Yeah but that's my point, instead of arguing about the constantly changing way people watch a show, why not just get more cash up front and step around the argument about say DVD versus online streaming. I think the writers completely deserve their share. But not like that many more people are watching the particular shows, they're just doing it in different ways than they used to. The residuals/royalty system worked fine when you had clearly defined windows but now it's anarchy.

As much as I am behind the writers and they should definitely get their due, I cannot say I have a lot of sympathy for them. Yes, without writers, there would be no films, televison shows, etc., but most of these people already work in the industry and have cushy jobs making six figure incomes. I am an unemployed SAG actor with a boring, low-paying day-job and would take almost any opportunity that came my way. It is time for the writers to end this garbage and get back to work.

If everyone stood up for what they believed in than we workers would be getting better salaries and better work invironments.
