as much as i love video games and have been playing them since i was 5 too, now being 25, i realize the value of money. when i first got a job, i blew over a thousand bucks in 2 months just on stuff i "thought" was a cool collection. i spent most of my money on old NES cartridges and nes systems just because it was all so cheap. i bought lots of 50+ games only to realize only half of them worked. i never even played the several hundred games i got. i sold my entire collection for like 175 bucks.

It's only when someone's who life orientates around something that it becomes a problem, and that's probably not the case here. I doubt the kid avoids friends, his family and an education just because he likes collecting Mario objects.
