If we were to follow the book of Leviticus, we'd find that shaving is the sin. But of course we are not under the Hebrew law. I think it is ridiculous for ANY religion to teach against beards or facial hair in general. I think it's fine for anyone to desire being clean-shaven, as I have been for a long time. But there is no sin in having a beard. The religious men of Old Testament times didn't believe it was wrong and neither did the founder of Christianity. Jesus had a beard Himself, after all!
Spartans were the first men to shave and they did it to deceive the men they were trying to kill. What a legacy for the razor blade industry. It is the normal state of man to have a beard and it is socially acceptable in the US to discriminate against men with beards. Shaving is a form of lying. It's like wearing a disguise when you shave off your beard. Why do men shave their faces to be hairless and smooth like a woman's? Because they want to conform and be in the norm.
Leviticus 19:27-28 expressly states that men (especially priests) should never cut the hair on the sides of their heads, or cut off or tamper with their beards.
I'm a member of the UPCI and we let the lord tell us as individuals... what he expects out of us....once you receive the holy ghost and speak in Tongues.. lord talks to you and leads you in the right path...it is his WILL for you life.. not your own..
So if he wont's you to have a beard you will....This thing is way bigger than you and me....be holy and ask the lord what he wont's...HE WILL TELL YOU... TRUST ME
Thank you Jesus....... for my understanding and knowledge of your way .....
Another thing that saddens me about the UPC is the typical form of worship I have witnessed. Real "beside yourself" worship seems too rare. Often when one person is seeking, a hundred or more people will seem to swarm around that person, seemingly worshiping at them rather than with them. This often bothered me and I wished that people would just DECENTRALIZE themselves and just focus on Jesus. Then their spirit of worship would get on seekers and not be such a short-lived form of prayer.
...When I went home that afternoon, I thought, "Well, to me this is like the eating meat sacrificed to idols issue." It's not a sin for those who know the idols are nothing, but a man wouldn't do it if it offended his brother". I reasoned to myself that these people were offended by facial hair for some reason. I did cut it off which pleased the people but I never thought it made me holy. They shouldn't set up unnecessary stumbling blocks. This man-made teaching does not serve Jesus' name.
About 25 years ago I entered a UPC church office to talk with the pastor about joining the church. I had enjoyed fellowship in this particular church in Raleigh, NC for about 6 months. I loved it & wanted to join. The pastor told me he had one more thing he wanted to say near the end of our meeting. He said that if I was to ever be on the platform I would have to shave my mustache. I had never heard anything like that and thought he was joking. I laughed but he assured me he was serious...
I am truly amazed at how human nature learns nothing, why is having a beard even an issue. According to Acts 2:38 repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Where is it written as a command that men shall not wear beards. This is the very minutia Jesus preached against when he was walking among us. Has the Pharisees been resurrected?
As a former member of the UPCI, I would have to say this the spirit and many of the dogmas associated with its teaching are the same ideas and philosophy our troops are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The UPCI is an organization no American should ever consider becoming a member of for any reason.
The UPCI is huge and there are some good men trying to make it better from "within", but they will have a hard path because of the corruption and sin. I would hardly classify even the most reprobate in the UPCI with the ragheads.
The UPCI is manifesting the fruits of men measuring themselves by themselves and commending themselves for several generations.
Brother Winters i agree totally, although i am of the upc church i do diagree that they should not preach against it either. I stand for Modesty and holiness as long as it is bible based. is there any way i can get your teaching on this subject. I would love and appreciate it. My first pastor was not against beards but, others were, Now i am a pastor i would love to get more on this.
The standard of any church or organization is the word of God please quit adding to it. We have enough to do with crucifying our flesh. The added commandments of men is not for us to follow. All they do is put a stumbling block and occasion to fall in our brother and sisters way.
The standards need to be Bible based and rightly divided. There is a point where proper application of Biblical principles to specific standards are proper, but they must be Bible based and not custom or anyone's whim and fancy.
I assume you mean Samson? He was a Nazarite which was a very temporary thing in the Old Testament. It was for a specific time. In the New Testament the Bible teaches that it is a shame for a man to have long hair on his head. Of course that is not referring to a man's beard.
Bro. Winter, thank you for sharing this on YouTube. Many Oneness Christians need to realize that a man's facial hair does not disqualify him from the pulpit. Some churches wouldn't let me teach because of my mustache, much less a full beard. May God bless your labor of truth and love.
@jsc1215 You're right. I don't actually like having a beard, but I think it might be necessary to demonstrate that this custom of forbidding male facial hair is a man-made doctrine which I don't have to obey. Whether I have a beard or not is beside the point. I think the doctrine against facial hair is a doctrine to control people. It's an easy way to judge who is submissive. But why must anyone submit to a command which is not Biblical? Men who command this are lords over God's heritage.
How foolish to suggest & argue as some do, that Jesus only had a beard because he was in captivity for 4 days. No man can grow a full beard in only 4 days! And, some say that the Roman soldiers "plucked" out his beard in the same way that girls pluck their eyebrows. So I guess the soldiers had Revlon tweezers? And if they plucked it with tweezers, that wouldn't even be painful! Their goal was to torture Jesus, so obviously they got a handful of beard & plucked it out. Amen to this video!
Hello Bro Winter, From what I remember what was taught at my church, concerning beards is that the U.P.C. church in Hayward California felt is was more of a church standard not a sin. It was more about appearing neater looking outwardly. Some Spanish Apostolic's can have a mustache. But to be used in the U.P.C. ministry you have to obey the guidelines set by the pastor. You can be a member of the church but to be used in the ministry you must in U.P.C. conform to the standards.
Isn't that pathetic, that they would set their personal standards, whim and fancy above the Word of God. I find it fascinating that the United Pentecostal Church would reject even Jesus Christ from being part of their ministry. No wonder that so many of them are sinking in to sin and being conformed to this world.
Hello Bro. Winter, You know I never thought of it that way, To not even let Jesus be a part of the ministry, I guess Jesus would have to shave Ha Ha Ha. The U.P.C. won't even let me minister in music in the service because I have a T.V. and teach tennis wearing tennis shorts and wear short sleeve shirts. But they won't hesitate to take my tithe and offerings.
Well, they are correct about many things. It is good that they are teaching modesty. 1Ti 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 1Th 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. I teach that TV will send you to hell. Ps 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
I feel ya bro! I was up to pastor a UPC CHURCH back in the day, but I refused to shave my goatee. Oh well I guess the prophet Elijah would not have made it in UPC either.Sad part is, it probably was a blessing leaving UPC- most folks in UPC that were claiming to be so holy had some real nasty issues when the truth came out.
upc standards are a stumbling block. It is a spirit of control. We know that you are of god by your spirit not by your looks. Remember man judge from outer appearances. If the devil dress right and look right to their eyes go figure they will give him the pulpit and right hand of fellow ship. My My God forbid!!
Some, yea even most UPC standards of holiness are Bible based, but that does not give them excuse for the other ones they have that are their own whim and tradition and defy the Bible.
We need to be careful not to throw bath water on the baby.
I can not understand how we can preach a beard is a sin. When God put facial hair on a man. There is no scripture that states that it is a sin to wear a beard.I shave, but do not believe it is a sin to wear a beard. We can say it is a sin to drive a chevy, but there is no scripture to support that either.
Is something sin because we don't like it. If I do not like a beard, that don't make beards sin.We need to stay in the Word.
first off. Jesus had a beard . it says " He didnt turn His face and let them pluck the hairs of his chin " seconldy i think all jews were commanded to have beards. it is wrong to preach against beards
Some say beards are a sin. Others say it's a sign of rebellion. If this is true, then this means that every morning I wake up in sin, because I have growth on my face. Since it is natural for a man to have a beard, wouldn't it be a rebellion against nature to shave it off? (not saying it's a sin to shave) Just like it's a rebellion against nature for a man to have long hair on his head. NATURE teaches us that long hair on a man is a shame. Just a thought.
"Shaving is OK except for effeminate reasons". Classic preaching, brother. Your magnificent beard is like that of the honorable Amish people. May God bless you and your ministry. Amen
There certainly is a lot of ignorance regarding Jesus Christ. Do people really think that those are actual photographs of Jesus Christ hanging in the false churches? Jesus did not have long hair, but He did have a beard.
