To anyone who's interested, I've now written a 'dummy's guide' on how to get Malice running through the Steam version of Quake. It lives on the 'Guides' page of my website - galleyuk(dot)net.
Hope it works for you! I wrote the instructions down as I was testing so hopefully it all makes sense.

@JoanMichele At the time when I did this playthrough, the Darkplaces Steam Quake patch was installed on my machine so it definitely works. Although I'm unsure as to whether or not Malice uses any of the inherent features that Darkplaces provides.
Unfortunately, running the game through Darkplaces came at a cost. You'll see what I mean later on. Hint: It breaks some of the levels.
@DanceOfDemon Well, Malice has been part of my games collection for many years back when the Resurrection Pack was first bought for me. There may be 'sources' out there where you can download the game from but I wouldn't be sure about that.
Nowadays, the game isn't classed as freeware since Team Epochalypse still exist in some form or another (albeit under a different company name, Ratloop).
@SeriousLeo5 There's nineteen levels if you take into account The Academy 'level' at the beginning and if you also manage to find the entrance to the two Secret levels.
But I suppose you'll find out about that last one soon enough!
