For Conan it wasn't about the money, although it's a nice piece of change at least. Conan wasn't hurting for cash in the first place and never will be.
Joan is bitter because she hasn't been relevant in a long time. Simply being bitter does not make you relevant and it certainly doesn't make you funny. She hangs on to her last semblance of her 'legend' status like a dying man clinging to his last seconds of life. She has a funny voice and bitches about everything. Sad, not funny.

I imagine that Joan nows as well as anybody that she's aging...and what I mean by that is we all take our own showers...we all go alone to the doctor, we all have the aches and pains, or numbness, or loss of vision and hearing that everyone else has...and some unusual tuck and roll on her face works for being able to work and look slick, (but also in her case...really done). So, she's smart, she knows more than anybody, just like we all do, that we're aging. WHen middle aged guys buy hot cars...

She only rips on Jay because Johnny Carson gave the gig to Jay, and left her standing as the stand up comedian that she aspires to be. With Jay Leno all of us car guys and motor heads get to witness the building of one mans car museum, with Joan we get to watch her work on her own chassis and all though it's a classic it;s just not as sought after as an old Mustang Shelby. :)

I used to be a huge Jay Leno fan, but I literally have been able to predict 95% of his "punchlines" for the past 10 years. Conan is original/hilarious and got screwed. Joan Rivers HAS NEVER BEEN FUNNY !!! Only stupid 40-60 year old women who don't understand good comedy find her funny... a "don't drive heavy machinery" joke Joan ? Really ? I agree she looks hotter in the "after" picture in the PEOPLE mag cover, but that's because it's further airbrushed, and the before picture i think they added shadow. Now, if you look at her "after" live video in the interview, her face looks very tightly pulled and mask-like. Maybe in 6 more months in will settle into something natural but the close-ups were frightening.
