Kid from Vallejo, Ca.; D.J. on KSOL in San Francisco (extremely popular). Formed a terrific band; Woodstock...and then... Hope this genius of music surprises everyone with a comeback. Don't be too surprised!
Imagine growing up when all their songs were in the TOP 10! An AWESOME time to live! You could go to sleep in the inner city of Detroit, Michigan and leave your door wide open all night long! Can't do that now! TRUST ME!
I think about that too. Long hair, wide collars, bell bottoms, dancing your ass with your lady to some of the coolest music ever. Must have been some good times.
Oh hell yeah! Block parties! Good food! Everyone being good to each other! Every lady on the block was an extention of you mom! Riding your bike for hour without the fear of getting it taken from you at gun point! I had a blast growing up!
like so much of sly's stuff, there is so much more to this song as you listen to it and know anything about him and the times in which he recorded this masterpiece.
I saw him last yaer 2007 in Rotterdam The Netherlands performing in North Sea Jazz.
He's an old men now so he says. Nevertheless he's one of the gratest and genius in music as wel as lyrics. Can you help me find more music of Sly, it's so hard to find. pls?
Me too John. My favorite was " Thank You (Falletime Be Mice Elf Agin). I always found it awesome that this group came out of the heart of the Hippie scene in San Fransisco. Very unique!
i wish i was there for that scene in the late 60's and during the 70's..now it's all dried up. i'm 24, live in san francisco now, still a cool town, but it's lost that wild and reckless nature from what i can see..at least in comparison. but you can still find some fun/trouble if you're looking for it.
a highlight this year was when i was on the street in my big shades, rockin my afro and a homeless guy came up to me and just said two words, 'sly stone.'
For some reason, until recently, this was always my least favorite of his songs. Over the years, growing and maturing, the lyrics have really hit home, and the sound of the record..was different than anything before or since. Remember when music was like that. everybody had their own style, unique and easily identifyable. Now everybody follows trends, and copies each other to where you just can't tell who's who. Anyway..this was Sly's last big hoorah, and he went out with a bang. Timeless.
I agree with ya wholeheartedly. This song reminds me of that delicate era of my life when I was getting ready to start Jr. High School. Our bus driver always played the radio on the bus and we would haer this song nearly every day. I never got tired of it. Definitely one of the best!
Hey, Terri. Man, I was in second grade. this is one of the few faves of mine that dosen't have much of a memory attached, because i never liked it much at the time. Maybe about ten years ago, I just listened to it on a fluke, and couldn't stop. I just love it now! Wierd, huh. My favorite lyric reminds me of Patti and me.."Newlywed a year ago..but you're still checkin each other out...yeah. " Lol!
Da best song they did, family family familyyyy afare afair well wat everrrrr great band man why is music sosososososososososososososososos shight now.
I love Sly's Greatest hits CD. This song came out a little later. It's ok but sort of simple and repetitious. It was a hit for them but I prefer the older stuff. There doesn't appear to be any concert footage anywhere from their early days when they had the hits. Too bad.
You can hear the weariness in Sly's voice, which reflected just how weary everyone was at that point in the struggle. And the drugs were starting to take their toll. But this is an album that was perfect for the moment, like What's Goin' On. And, it still rings true and I play it still after all these years because the music is so good and the lyrics are so good and damn, who makes music like this anymore?
It is at that. I bought the CD of their greatest hits (pre-Family Affair) which is the BEST party album in the world! When this song came out, it marked a radical change from Sly's earlier "dance to the music" period. He sounded cynical, despondent, weary. Family Affair is a profound song with depth and meaning. The lyrics are relevant even now. One wonders why Sly faded away. His influence on music is evident everywhere, even now.
] The album is characterized by a significant amount of tape hiss-the result of Sly's extensive re-recording and overdubbing during production. He was high as kite but the record was the joint then & now cocaine is a hell of drug
drugsthe band switched to a grittier funk sound, which was as influential on the music industry as their earlier work.[4] The band began to fall apart during this period because of drug abuse and ego clashes; consequently, the fortunes and reliability of the band deteriorated, leading to its dissolution in 1975.[5] Sl "Sly & the Family Stone" name from 1975 to 1983. In 1987, Sly Stone was arrested and sentenced for cocaine use, after which he went into effective retirement.[4]
Yeah, and that IS too bad because Sly had it all. At least he didn't lose his marbles completely like Syd Barrett, though. As for this recording and overall album, I like it because it is very different from the innocence and freshness of Stand! and the recordings before that. THIS album, THere's a Riot Going On, reminds one of touring burnout.
Or maybe referring to "cooking", as in prepping up the sticky heroin paste and boiling water prior to injection. Hmm..... See? That's what I like about lyrics of the past. They are not always so clear or up front: you actually ponder what the artists meant. Subtley and mystery are missing in much of today's pop music. :/
