Pat Martino's sound in some of these recordings enthralls me. Does anyone know what equipment he used here, or even better, an authoritative source for this kind of info? Thanks.
@clearview2yu: Yeah...I remember the Min'd pick ad in Guitar Player Magazine from the 70's...Recently, I tried set of "Pat Martino" strings by GHS. The E string was about 0.015". They did have a distinctive sound.
@clearview2yu A few years ago I was working at the detroit jazz fest. I was working with Pat and got a chance to check out his guitar. He had fairly low action and had either 12's or 13's. This was his black gibson signature model. He may have different setups depending on the guitar, either way it was a beautiful guitar up close
@diz52nd : Yeah! the tick-tick-tick can be a little bothersome which I encountered, however with the density of his lines and his up/down picking application you get pass it.
i wore that record out back in ca. 1977 .... still one of my top 10 of all times.
one could argue the moniker "smooth jazz" - this sounds smooth with the classic Rhodes sound - yes, but it has so much more depth, inventiveness, virtuosity, creativity, drive, real artistry on every level. which one of the current "smooth" players can touch this ?
@gitmantube - I have to agree with you. When people use the term 'smooth jazz' it usually means Kenny G and that sort of pop jazz radio crap that upper income folk listen to because they think they're sophisticated :)
This is cool jazz, but Miles took that in the 50s... this is cool, smooth, luscious, fat, drenched in soul.
one of my favorite ballads. pat kills it!
