Feeling yourself disintegrate is ****king genius... it sounds just like when I feel myself disintegrate, which is not that often(thankfully), but anyway...
I was intrigued when I heard they were covering Stravinsky. Needless to say, it was beautiful. The rest of the album was just incredible. Wendy Lewis' range is very amazing.
The best songs, to me, are "Radio Cure", "Comfortably Numb", and "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate".
The way the Bad Plus "covers" tunes is unlike any other band on the planet.
What an underrated album from a band that needs more attention.
It's a children's toy. some sort of rattle toy drum. Listen to Iron Man on Give and during the drum breaks you can here it in action. That little tinkling, ratchety noise is it. He always has it somewhere near to bust out randomly. Sometimes on a drum sometimes on the floor. He puts it on his snare to deaden it.
He also uses a splash cymble too, but his real trick is when he puts his keys on his snare. Try it. You'll go holy shit Dave King is playing my snare drum.
At the beginning I wasn't very sure about this album, I listened to some samples over the internet and felt "..what the hell..." BUT then i bought the limited vinyl version and I must say that this is a really fantastic album. Is different from the previous The Bad Plus' albuns, but is really good. Wendy's voice matches perfectly with the sound of the band. Is something else... I do recommend it!! [Listen it without preudice]
BUT IT IS FANTASTIC! They do some beautiful things to the songs. And they picked the perfect vocalist. Her voice blends with the music so well but sticks out in such a beautiful way. I hope they do more songs here and there with Wendy.
The more i listen to this album the more i love it.
i love, love, love, the bad plus. this said. i was more than a little disappointed with this album. the vocals completely take away from the otherwise excellent musicianship of these guys. the comfortably numb cover was an offensive attack on an otherwise melodically brilliant piece. i can understand the dissonance values for the sake of jazz, but i feel it is only effective instrumentally, when it was put into vocals it just sounded plain bad. if you want to check a bp album, check GIVE.
I was really turned off by the whole singer thing, then I found out the new album is all covers, and now after watching this you can tell that Ethan is obviously not 100% on the idea either by his lack of input verbally on everything except the instrumental pieces. I'm not buying the album. Gotta wait for the next one I guess. Maybe they'll collaborate with Kurt Rosenwinkel like they've done live a few times, that might be nice.

At 5:03 what does Dave King have on his snare drum... The sounds he gets from that drum kit is amazing...
Looks like a piece of tupperware...;)

I think it's like a peanut container or something that would hold the likes of cool whip, dip, etc.

both wrong, it's a toy that has bells in it when you wind it up. I've seen him use it live both on the snare and as it's own percussion instrument.
