@TomZentra unfortunately, it's the good old days for this RS7000 as well :-) I sold it and am mostly using Ableton now..... but geez, i miss those knobs and buttons :-(
@onnolab I know what you mean. I used to own an MC-909 that I really loved using. After I read online rumors the next generation Roland groovebox was to be released soon I sold my MC-909. Years later I regret that decision. Now I have mainly a software-based studio. Sadly, the golden era of grooveboxes has ended and will never return.
probably about $600-700 US on ebay? they are very rare now. i sold mine cos it couldn't play one pattern to another without stopping :-( using ableton now
Good luck on getting one. You may wish to hit up ebay for one of those XD into Smartmedia adapters. I sold my RS for cash to get a MacBook, which resolve all those siily and strange computer problems I had with PC. Hence I'm hooked on Ableton now. Hope to put up some vids on my current set up soon.
You seem pretty experienced with this piece of hardware. What makes it so great compared to say the korg esx? I know it has synths in it, but other than that, what does it do that everyone seems so in love with about it? I really want to know because I'm thinking about buying this or an electribe esx. I know they're kinda in differn't leagues, but I think the esx is kick ass. But at the same time I don't want to buy something I'll get bored of. If the rs is much better, I'd buy that.
RS700 has a better sequencer than ESX. RS display is larger with more info. Only niggle with RS was the limiting RAM, but if you're not playing a huge gig, it's ok. ESX has less parts but it seems to be more spontaneous in its effects/ribbon feature. ESX costs 1/3 of RS's original price. But nowadays, the RS is a lot cheaper.
if you don't want something that you'll get bored of, check out Ableton Live. With some good controllers programmed, it absolutely replaces any groovebox I had before.
Thanks for the info man. I really appreciate it. I agree Ableton is kick ass and very powerfull. My only issue is I want something that is in my face all the time not hanging up with silly computer errors or latency issues or some strange conflict. I like the idea of jumping on a box and kicking out some tunes. If not at least for the workflow and keeping the creative juices flowing, at least to have something to start the music with. I like the RS. I might have to just get it.
Yes, I totally agree, kellyssa and sonnybrown. I'm now using my Ableton/VST set up with Elektron Machinedrum, Dave Smith Evolver and hoping to get another analog synth. I want the best of both worlds, software and hardware. If I survive the global recession, I might get an SP-404 for live. Cheers and thanks for your comments!
Ableton live is fantastic for djing and creating but still playing live , some of the best vst`s use too much cpu and you get clicks. I don`t have a mac .
I like to create in live then export to hardware and sequence hardware.
you can freeze tracks and bounce to audio but then you can`t tweak it live ?
I am trying to find a solution to the high cpu usage of some vst`s but don`t want to sacrifice on the fly creativity.
Yeah, my mac's been pretty stable and I can control vst's like jupiter 8v and atmosphere without crashing. Got a BCR2000 to control ableton and it does work pretty well, esp with drum racks and effects.
Been experimenting with future retro xs and moogerfooger pedals, sequenced by MFB step64 sequencer to add on to my live set. May consider buying a MFB522 drum computer, cheap and good enough for live.
thanks to all who commented. i've seen BT live in Singapore 10 yrs ago. great show but unfortunately his jp8000 was out of tune when he played some piano chords live. with current technology, less risk of that happening :-)
u r spot on....early 90s when i used to rave. i'm already a dad nearing 40 :-) u can get an rs7000 off ebay for the price of 2 used electribes. i got mine for AUD$600 (US$540)

and do you need anything else than this machine? or do i need to get other gear to make it work
ciscocalixto 2 years ago
you'll need headphones or amplifier/speakers to hear the sounds, and audio cables to connect the machine to the amplifier/speakers
