"Such a shame" was inspired by Luke Rhinehart’s The Dice Man, one of composer Mark Hollis' favourite books.
The Dice Man is a cult novel published in 1971 by George Cockcroft under the pen name Luke Rhinehart and tells the story of a psychiatrist who begins making life decisions based on the casting of dice.
@TheViralSBK I have to Thank You for this Information about The Dice Man! Now I understand it all. Great Song, I love it from the Beginning. I was born 1971 like the book :-)
@TheViralSBK Now THAT, if true ( and I dont doubt it ), is a POST worth `Posting`. Thankyou whoever you are friend....Makes a change from the petty arguments we normally get. TALK TALK are a classic....dont bitch on their site folks, argue elsewhere. They`re WORTH so much more.
@duran9418 Thank you, I wrote that comment to encourage the use of Wikipedia. I know that Wikipedia may not be 100% reliable, however I clearly remeber watching on TV an interview of Mark Hollis back in 1984 where he explained the meaning of this song, and though the details got a bit blurred in my memory 25+ years later, I remembered about a man using some dices - so I went to Wikipedia and got all the details. Wikipedia is really cool if you want to know things about songs
@universaliss You're right. Tears for Fears...Spandau Ballet...Pet Shop Boys...Bronsky Beat...Talk talk...Roaring boys...and many many others! You made '80s unforgettable! Ciao from Italy.
what a fucking awesome band...why are we as a society so passive ...we need another revolution against the rubbish we call music that is being churned out today catering to our oblivious youth..talk talk about a shame!
@codern well we're a mix really between my funk inspired bass, a metal drummer, classic rock guitarist and a pop/rock singer, i think its a great combination of people who all hope to change the direction of music
@deadfredshead sounds like my kinda band. Well let me give you some sound advice. Dont set out to change the direction of music. Set out to be great musicians and a great band that creates great music. As a positive byproduct of that, change would be great. But remember, there are tons of great musicians out there, today however, they are underground, the shit gets to be on top..so does it really matter if you "change" the direction of music. It may be ideal, but just be proud to be an
Great cut, I would NOT call them ahead of their time but just just very good. Agree or disagree respectfully. There were a handful of bands form this period that had awesome alternative music - a super time for music (especially dance club stuff). Its a long list.
This version with the nice rhythmic intro is the best. Do you people the New Wave of the eighties? Brilliant song it's got the atmosphere of a very produtive British decade.
Typical of good bands. Unless you paid off a DJ like Madonna your music would never be heard on the radio while other bands are so overplayed! This is the first I've heard of the band, after seeing another YouTube video "Life's what you make it" They're really good!
A great song. As good as, if not better than, what Duran Duran were doing at the same time; yet Talk Talk never seemed to get the same exposure as LeBon and co. Such a shame (no pun intended). I'm 29, and first heard them, by accident, on Arrow, classic rock radio.
@saintsouleyman the only thing i know is that mark is retired and spending his life with his family now, he doesnt make music anymore, paul webb and lee harris? dont know.
if you released this today the kids today would have a cerebral meltdown , music has deteriorated so badly since the 80's and early nineties their minds ever full of needy rubbish would dissolve

Spot on srch4you! For me (producer myself), the most influencial and interesting band around back then (and still today). Such a shame we can't get more of Mark and the rest.
Such a Shame. What a song. Rythmic unison and brilliance in music. Talk Talk absolutely astounds the listener with perfect lyrics, perfect music, and perfect timing. I've read thousands of fabulous comments just on this site, YouTube, alone. What a group! They are fantastic and their music is remarkable!! It leaves an imprint on your mind. We need to urge Talk Talk to tour one final time. Their support would be overwhelming and successful! We love their music!
This song, Such a Shame, along with Renee, Does Caroline Know, It's My Life, and Tomorrow Started are all ginormous, classic Talk Talk hits. Talk Talk's music leaves the listener spellbound, ultimately tapping the "replay" button again and again. Their music is synthetically balanced and lead vocals are heartfelt and rich. Talk talk gave us "timeless" music in song. On a personal note, I look forward to the day when one lucky group will magically remake these songs.
Excellent album front to back not one bad song.

If you like Talk Talk's album/single covers you could join the "James Marsh Appreciation Group" on Facebook dedicated to the guy who made them all!
You will find all the James Marsh original works made for Talk Talk and lots more.
