i'd say poor maintenance has a LOT to do with that.

check everything once a week, tubes, connections, fluid levels. if you're thorough and take care of it, your car will take care of you, and not burn down in a fire on the side of the road.

Any reliable vehicle has a long history of preventative maintenance. The entire concept of vehicles is sacrificial wear, so that main components don't. If the grease or whatever wears out, then the main components DO wear out, and it gets expensive.

All that said, Australian Landcruisers are different to American models.

Just about as many parts on your Buick were made outside the the US as the parts on a US assembled Toyota. Also, the lower ball joint problem that plagued the Tundras the past few years was due to the fact that those Tundras were built in Michigan and Toyota bought GM balljoints because it saved some money from shipping etc. If it weren't for the General Motors parts failing there wouldn't have been a recall.
