  • Major skills.

  • It started out jazz then went to blues and to rock then spanky country pickin then back to blues and the to hard rock/metal shred, and back to jazz

  • If that's a representation of the tones he used to get with a PRS then I prefer that to the Suhrs he uses now.

  • what kind of jazz is this???

  • @mariox011 its GGjazz

  • @mariox011 Fusion

  • Damn you Guthrie I really wanna practice more, but I can't stop watching you play

  • @ticiolino same :)

  • I LOVE listening to guthrie!!!!!

  • at some points he sounds almost like srv. this guy is the shit, an absolute master of guitar

  • wich song is 5:52 pleasee

  • @Neaniscuo SANTANA- EUROPA ;)

  • @raxxalexx Actually its Samba Pa ti

  • @guitarstudent101 Yeah man, samba pa ti ..

  • man GG is so damn good i love it !!! i love watching he and Carl verheyan go off in their own worlds and make that piece of wood sing! theyre so AMAZING!

  • WWKHD?

    what would kirk hammet do?

  • @NeckPickup go play some pentatonic stuff to try and reassure himself that he doesn't suck, lol

  • And that's Guthrie just "messing around"....

This guitar player is one of a kind. I dare the world to come up another Guthrie Govan! It woudn' even be fear...

  • guys hes just noodling around.

you gotta love the sound dont take it too personal,

  • @PetetheJazzMan you're still right, but it's a combination chord. some people call it the 5/7 chord, but if you look at it, it IS a dim chord. the 7th chord in any group is a "flat five" chord (diminished), but for that more traditional and full sound, most commonly used is a combination chord 5 over 7. the 5 chord with a 7 in the bass. in the key of C, that's a G chord with a B bass. and if you look at it, that chord is actually a m7b5 chord. so we're both technically "right". good eye

  • absolutely amazing......

  • does anyone know wich scale he is playin in this vid?

  • @Noahshollow , it's always going to be a combination of scales, but most importantly he's playing more with arpeggios. u can hear the pentatonic parts easily, but in the beginning he's outlining an actual chord progression. one of the worst things a guitarist can do is get held up with scales and miss the focus on arpeggios. arpeggios open your world up haha. start with the chords in 1 key, like C, and go through the arpeggios that make up that key ( C, Dm, Em, F, G7, Am, and G/B).

  • BUGGER i have been playing 30 years

I wish I could "mess around" like that

    the man is amazing

  • you know your instrument means you know theory, but you just dont know the names of certain things. you still know the theory, you just cant put a name to it like A Dorian or Pentatonic scales

  • no seriously. I know no theory. Im learning it to help out our other guitarist but still didn't know it when i started writing.

  • it's a little deeper then that.

but you don't need to know theory to write or play music. its just like science i know how to start a fire but if i knew how to start it from a scientific perspective i could see that i could do so much more with or to that fire.

but no you don't have to know theory to enjoy playing or writing music but it would make things a tons easier if you know or understand some.

    .

  • sorry i replied to the wrong person

  • @Thurman91

Dude you can't just say that everything is theory just cause there's probably a name for what you're doing. If someone uses their ears to develop a chord-progression they dig, doesnt mean its theory that you have no name for?

  • chord progression is a huge aspect of music theory. there's a reason why chord progressions sound good, and theory explains why.

  • no, actually it doesn't. theory explains why it should sound good, but it doesn't mean it actually sounds good. For instance, i normally hate the standard 1 4 dominant7 progression, because i think it is to static, and prefer other ways of getting back to the route, like a Bbmajor, Cmajor to a Dmajor. a lot of theory would suggest the other alternatice, which i think is shit. i have learned a lot of theory in school, but i think music has the emotional aspect as well. theory is just a nice tool

  • Writing music while not knowing even a small amount of music theory is like trying to speak with 5 letters instead of the whole alphabet. Your self expression in your music will never be fully realized if you limit yourself. Just my opinion...

  • @HAC96818 i have to disagree because theory in a way limits you it says you can only do this and this and essentially its just a tool to recognising musical aspects so people know what youre on about and i agree that music theory is vital absolutely music would be a mess without it but as bruce lee said "the conscious mind is the biggest limit' play what you feel man.

    Peace Out

    -Tom :)

  • I do agree with you slightly about the fact that when you know your way around theory you mighhttt get stuck in it. The challenge is knowing your theory while also being able to be expressive. Guthrie's definitely go it down.

  • think of music as a language... if you know the language well enough you can speak (play) fluently whatever comes to mind, just like you can say whatever comes to mind...

theory in no way limits your ability to play from the heart... its all guidelines to popular techniques, if you can't play what sounds good to you because of theory.. then Im sorry my friend but you are a moron

  • @topperspoppers you must be able to understand english before you can argue because you blatantly didnt even understand what i said i never said that music theory stops you playing from the heart, when did i ever say that in my comment and actually i said it is vital, a musician cant survive in the real world without knowledge of music theory.

  • oh really ?

"i have to disagree because theory in a way limits you it says you can only do this and this"

    sorry if I misunderstood

  • i say 'in a way it limits you' because i am only talking to people who get so immensely caught up in the theory that they forget to play from the heart not saying you shouldnt learn it in fact i force my students to learn it to diploma level (if theyll ever reach that level), indeed it is an extremely important tool but occasionally peopl forget to play from the heart because they are so focused whether it will "make sense" if you see what i mean.

  • @topperspoppers All im really saying is if you dont learn theory it wont necessarily harm your musicality. Yes in most cases it might but look at Art Tatum, Stevie Ray, Wes Montgomery. We all now jazz needs lots of theory but these guys didnt know any.

I perfectly understand if you dont agree because its a very controversial topic.

  • I partly agree with you, but I'm sure Eddie Van Halen would disagree.

  • @topperspoppers BUT this is the part were you fail epically you can be an amazing musician without music theory you idiot (something to justify your sheer stupidity) look at Tatum, greatest jazz piano player, if you knew any theory its actually a way to understand music, theory comes from making good music from the heart and people trying to understand why it works not the other way round so you my friend are a 'moron'

  • no fusion-jazz playing without theory !!! you are OUT !

  • @samycool007 Bullshit

  • @BringOnTheNoise92 I think you ain't got no chance with Guthrie unless you got at least 50% theory done, and the other 50 being covered with musical talent.

  • thoughs licks made my lip twitch lol..... just a shame the whole vid is out of sync with his playing

    still worth watching of course

  • i love that almost all the comments seem to be from frustrated, disheartened guitarists - myself included.

With reason though, Guthrie is fucking ridiculous. I long to find a video where he isn't perfect, just to make myself feel better...

  • he screws up the tapping part in wonderful slippery thing live.

    VERY VERY rarely.

  • i know that maekes me sad everytime

  • 3:25-> SRV....really nice

  • ah i wish i wanted it enuff to spend all day practis like i did when i was a kid (:

  • WHY IS HIS TONE SO GOOD?!?!?

  • Because he is Guthrie Govan.

  • Because he is Guthrie Govan. And Guthrie Govan is essentially the second coming of Jesus Christ. hahah

In all seriousness, it's probably his amps and guitars.

  • because he knows his instrument in and out

  • Because his body is full of tone.

  • Because he knows where, how and when to attack the string with his pick and finger-picking and also how hard and where to fret the string.

Really, there is a good deal of detail put into all of that... I know cause... I've been trying to learn myself!!!!!! :p

    Peace and love.

  • Instead of argueing you guys should maybe practice more and talk less if you wanna get better at something.

You know what the main difference is between you and guthrie ? He does not play music for his ego. And if you are really honest about it ask yourself: why do I play guitar... I believe 90 % will say: to impress other people IF they are honest to themselfes. This is why you arent practicing right now but checking out videos and commenting on them. This will get you nowhere.

  • :) And you should stop spreading your moral and judgements about everybody around! It's okey, if people wanna comment that's with them! You are criticizing them for being here doing comments on youtube: Hey, you are just doing it too!

  • @arschsau123

nah man, i disagree. only the people that suck would honestly say that, but people like me and my friends who are actually good at guitar play because we have a passion for it. i get what you're saying though. lots of people play just to impress people *cough* *cough* yngwie malmsteen *cough* *cough*.

  • @Fluffypopcicle Say what you want about yngwie, but there is no way you will ever be as good as him.

  • @tastefulphrasing

and how would you know that? you have never even heard me play before. im not as good as yngwie, but im getting there and i can already reach speeds faster than yngwie. of course speed means almost nothing, it's about technicality, soul, and versatility. you can never say how good somebody can be at anything especially in this case.

  • @arschsau123 and what are you doing? lol leaving long ass useless comments trying to sound mature? y dont u go practice or something?

  • @arschsau123 dude... guthrie bless you

  • @arschsau123 or some people, instead of just wanting to be good at guitar, (which frankly, is very very difficult, unless you start at a very early age) just want to listen to someone good playing, and listen and enjoy very good music

  • @arschsau123 I'm afraid your absolutely right. I have to stop anticipating and instead buckle down and practice.

In this video Guthrie's noodling around which unfortunately makes up 90% of my practicing time.

  • @DistortedV12 Guthrie says playing is practice as far as he's concerned. He never really had a practice routine but I guess he is just genetically superior musically.

  • @arschsau123 That's the main trouble on guitar world, who's faster, who's better, all is a battle. It's not that big in other instruments like piano, it's a shame, it's a great instrument and as you say 90% of the people see it that way

  • @arschsau123 Sorry dude, I'm afraid you don't know the word 'VIRTUOSO'. He just play like that to actually impress everybody showin off his skills, otherwise he'd just be doing something else. Nobody wants to be that good for no reason. Nice words though.

  • @arschsau123 Im going to save your text and add it to my quotes diary.

  • @arschsau123 well said bro

  • @arschsau123

    Well said.

  • what is it with some people? Yes, hard work alone can get you very very very far. But to completey discount genes as having anything to do with talent is utterly moronic and dellusional. Maybe with 8 hours practice a day, some people can get as good as Guthrie, but many many cannot. Many people practice insane hours and never get as good as this. Some people are more naturally talented than others. Fact. Dont like it? Deal with it. Practice. But some peoples limits are further than others.

  • this is just so upsetting...

  • Good shit, Govan!

    Big ups!

  • Is it just me or does the video go out of sync... my computer probably can't handle the goodness of his playing : )

  • how do u learn to play like this ?? :O

  • practice. put in the hours. a bit of talent with a good attitude helps greatly. he has and done these 3 things. nothings impossible. yes i am god.

  • lolwut

  • loller you stole my name

  • Forgive me :(?

  • practice? the Guthrie Govan's level not is practice he's too much talented

  • I'm sorry to tell ya... but even if you will practice from now until your death non stop, you will never play basketball like Michael Jordan or even Kobe or Wade. for that matter, you won't ever play like Guthrie even if you'll practice till the end of time, unless you're one of the fraction percentage of people that have the genetic ability to do so if they practice a lot.

  • u fail.

i surpassed all my friends that have been playing for 10+ years in 3 years. know why? cause i practiced my ass off and im way more disciplined then they are.

you can become as good if not better than guthrie if u want it bad enough.

  • not rly.... but its always good to have hope :D

  • hahahahahahaha

  • "you can become as good if not better than guthrie if u want it bad enough"

Sorry to break the news to you, kid, but life doesn't work that way. To be *your* best at anything obviously requires hard work. To be *the* best requires hard work and genetics. Ask any ballerina, Olympic athlete, opera singer, etc. Not just anybody can be an Einstein, or a Mozart, or a Govan. But we can try to come as close as we can.

  • sorry to break it to you, but ur wrong.

its people like u that drive me to get better though so thank you. i love nothing more than proving people wrong.

if u practice fuckin 8 hours a day you will get to his level. trust me on that.

and i now its not how many hours u practice. its also about how u practice. and i know damn well how to practice.

    peace out, kid.

  • "if u practice fuckin 8 hours a day you will get to his level. trust me on that.

and i now its not how many hours u practice. its also about how u practice. and i know damn well how to practice."

There are tens thousands of guitarist who practice that much, thousands who have more native talent than you, who are *wired* differently than you, who practice better than you, and as a result play better than you -- and 99.9999% of them will never be at Govan's level.

  • Comment removed

  • ur acting like guthrie is only 12 and hasn't been playing guitar for a long time. its not IMPOSSIBLE to get to his level of guitar playing.

  • "ur acting like guthrie is only 12 and hasn't been playing guitar for a long time"

No, I'm not. There are a lot of guitarist who have played a lot longer than he has.

Do you think a mentally retarded person can become a nuclear physicist? You can only play the cards you're dealt, and the fact is, some people are dealt better cards (Einstein, Mozart, Leonardo, etc.) Govan's a genius. If he wasn't busy being the best guitar player in the world, he'd be a polylingual physicist or something.

  • its clear now that ur just a big fan of guthrie govan, and its common to stick up for the people that u look up to.

i realize how talented guthrie govan is.. ive been listening to him since he first did the shawn lane lessons and became known. i know all of his work.

but guthrie is human. a human who worked really hard to get to where he is. he didn't just become that good from the way he was "wired" as you say.

  • "a human who worked really hard to get to where he is. he didn't just become that good from the way he was 'wired' as you say "

You're missing the point. Sorry to break the news to you, not all men are created equal. Some people are smarter, or more attractive, or more athletic. Hard work is required to master ANYTHING, but it comes easier to some, and their performance envelope is broader. Fact of life, bro.

  • i see what your saying. but what im saying is that u can work for it also. (in some cases)

take this years dunk contest for example.

look at the contenders.. and look who won out of them. u have howard who is like almost 7ft tall i think? and look who beat him.. a guy thats no taller than i am. 5ft7.

thats a good example i think.

  • haha actually that isnt a very good example.

i think what your trying to say is that

Govan i makes you want to be a great musician...one who "knows" what hes doing and has Control over what he dose.

not to become some Govan Clone

with hard honest work you will get there.

dont listen to those people who just worship them cause they think their great..hell have you ever heard what comes from those JP fanboys? geez they treat him like a god...that is how Musicians and players get overrated.

  • i think its a good example..

it just proves that u dont need to be born with the genes to achieve something.. hard work can also get u there.

howard was born to be 7ft tall and the person who beat him at his own game was my height.. genes vs hard work and look what happened.

thats what i believe in. hard work and determination.

  • J P is a great guitar player, Don't just judge him from his Dream Theater stuff. If you see his clinics youll know he knows what hes doing.

That being said, ANY musician who reaches that stage of prowess deserves respect.

  • @bertobgood2 I'm afraid my friend that at 8 years of age, Guthrie was working out Joe Pass tunes by ear while the rest of us at that age were looking for a new seat for our pushbikes or a new net to catch tadpoles. Honest! I'm no psychologist, but I wish someone could explain that one to me.

  • "Do you think a mentally retarded person can become a nuclear physicist?"

oh geez lol you do know there is a Mentally Challenged People who actually reach their goals? Some where in China there was Mental child what would always play around on the piano just banging away cause it made noise...until one day he heard some one actually play something and with in a few months this child was creating Melodic Inversions. last i heard hes was going thru theory lesson.(that was a year ago btw)

  • "oh geez lol you do know there is a Mentally Challenged People who actually reach their goals?"

Judging from your grammar, you're one of them. You learned to use a keyboard. Congratulations! ^_^

"in China there was Mental child [..] this child was creating Melodic Inversions"

You're talking about autism, not retardation.

I know this is hard for some people to understand, but NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE THE SAME. Some hard born prettier, or smarter, or faster, or stronger, etc.

  • it wasn't autism

  • i think it's called idiot sevant

  • "I know this is hard for some people to understand, but NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE THE SAME. Some hard born prettier, or smarter, or faster, or stronger, etc."

    and some are dicks huh?

anyway maybe you should give it a go your self,,,but then again we need people like you i guess.

  • "and some are dicks huh?"

    Like yourself? Yes.

    "it wasn't autism"

Give us a name, or we'll assume you pulled that story out of your ass.

  • youtube it.

its around in the Chinese youtube page

every thing was in Chinese but his name

which was like Hou Yan or Yan Hou. im sure a google search with come up with something.

    anyway have a great week.

  • lol u are fun :D

  • lol, dude, your a little fucker arent you?

  • "lol, dude, your a little fucker arent you? "

    Pretty much. :)

  • i think you have Player and Musician Confused

yes people can get to his "Level Of Playing"

as far as his Musical Sensibilities....thats like trying become a whole new person. that cant happen...there will be people who will come close to being like him in that way but it will just be stuff hes already written but even so they wont have his true sound.

so if your saying no one can get to his level of playing then sir you are one stubborn fanboy,

  • i dont think he ever hits a wrong note :(

    DAMN YOU GUTHRIE!

  • this is mind blowing as a musician to see

but heart crippling as a guitarist to watch

  • @jamie241290 The good news is my friend is that he wants to share it with everyone. The way he breaks it down and explains it in simple english rather than being an egotist like some other big name guitarists is heartwarming and encouraging. I met him at the Bassment in Chelmsford a month ago and we had a ciggy at the back door and spoke about Banksy. He looked liked he just come back from a Glastonbury festival.I'm still high from it.

  • @frannyp46 when i was 8 i was performing in the All Country Honors Orchestra. Dunno what u were doing at 8..

  • @bertobgood2 I was learning how to spell correctly and use proper pronunciation numpty!

  • @frannyp46 Then go be an english teacher. I'll be a musician ;)

  • @bertobgood2 Yeah, but will you be able to read? Heehee!

  • @frannyp46 I'd rather listen.

  • @bertobgood2 How good are your transcription skills then?

  • @frannyp46 decent at most. I was forced to transcribe some miles and some coltrane in college.

  • unbelievable good!

  • I've been playing guitar for about 25 years now, and I've heard a lot of good, versatile players. But I've never heard anyone with as much mastery on the instrument that crosses so many styles and genres. Govan is the new standard.

  • As much as I love Shawn Lane, I dont think his phrasing is as good as Guthrie's, Shawn was the fastest ever and his phrasing was good, but Guthrie's phrasing is amazing.

  • 8:08 to 8:13 redefining dictionary definition of "bubbly". That's what I always thought.... guitar ..with accuracy.. at those speeds could sound like sax... or ultra mellow oboe played by a jazz master...but better.

  • Guthrie - genius!!

  • omfg...

  • Does he have a live dvd?.........or any fucking dvd?

  • I've heard rumors of an Erotic Cakes DVD to be released. Not sure if it's true or not, though. I believe there is a topic on it in Guthrie's official forum. However, if you go to Myspace videos, there are two pro recordings of "Fives" and "Wonderful Slippery Thing."

  • seriously, has there ever been anyone better than this?

  • Shawn Lane but I'll admit Guthrie is the best going around that I have heard - that is alive.

He is just so refreshing to watch, and has all techniques smooth and equal to each other.

  • having a chance to hang out with guthrie, he is the most down to earth, respectful guy I've met. Even when he was playing 2 feet in front of me I still was blown away!

  • great guitarist, humble man, simply original and highly underrated, amazing, surely knows how to test an amp out...we should all be ashamed

  • great guitarist, humble man, simply original and highly underrated, amazing, surely knows how to test an amp out...we should all be ashamed

  • best player on the planet ??? .. he's gotta be up there on the list aint he .. great tones, great style .. stunnin stuff .. he makes me wanna play, so i think i'll go grab my geetar !!

  • It makes me want to throw mine out the god damn window.

  • guthrie is the best player I have ever heard... and hes a hell of a cool guy

  • i wanna this amp!!

  • Great as always!

  • how does he sound so goood?

he's doesn't even have a backing track to create note tension with
