  • Maybe you should take this video down. I mean, Tim actually put this song up himself, the same version and all. So, yeah. Might be a good idea.

  • @Ryan9145X I think I'll stick to the Christmas spirit of sharing, but thanks for the self-importance.

  • Absolute genius at work

  • genius

  • TIM MINCHIN FOR CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE!

  • "I'm hardly religious" - boy, that's the understatement of the century.

  • As an atheist/agnostic myself, the holidays are always sort of a weird time. I get asked a lot, "Why would you celebrate Christmas if you don't believe in Christ?" Well - this is why. And I do quite like the songs.

  • i've heard this song hundreds of times over, but it never fails to give me goosebumps:)x

  • @CystVonCysor When you put on transcribe audio, it shows some pretty weird captions.

  • I cried.

  • My mother died of cancer three years ago. I found this song on her death anniversary 5 days ago. I couldn't really finish listening to the song then, but now I can handle it.

I want to drink white wine with my dad, my brother and sister and mum in the sun.

  • Amazing song <3

  • This may sound weird, but this is reminding me of listening to Don MacLean sing "Caledonia." Beautiful.

  • How can someone dislike this song?

  • if u dont like this u should die xxxx i love tim

  • I have heard it dozens of times but still can't help but tear up.

    Beautifull song about family.

  • Just came home from listening to Tim perform this at his hometown, Perth. First time I had ever heard it and I almost cried. What an incredibly moving, beautiful song.

  • I've listened to this song so many times and it means more to me everytime I do. My sister's in New Zealand and she usually comes home for Christmas.

    I love my family.

  • So an amazing song. Saw Tim perform in High Wycombe last year on the 'Are You Ready For This?' tour and of course he was f*cking epic. He didnt however perform this song though. I love it, I'm sure if he did perform it. It would have me in tears, sure im a 19yr old guy, but come on, anyone with a heart would cry to this.

    Love it.

    Viva la Minchin

  • i think this is the most beautiful song ever written, jokes or not, religious or not. The literal sense of the words sung are amazing, the family handly the kid around like some materialistic toy, yet by doing so the child gains love and when growing older has all the joy of love brought into it's life, and no matter what it does when older , has a home to go to, you cannot write a better song.

  • Wow this guy looks so different from anyone ive ever seen, im not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing

  • christmas #1 for 2011, 2010 failed:p

  • This is my new favorite Xmas song, it makes me cry so hard!

  • <3 I was so close to tears listening to Tim sing this at the Metro Arena in Newcastle last night... So sweet.

  • The Transcribe Audio captions really take the lyrics to a whole new level. 'Beyond that I was on this issue has gone on CD-ROM' indeed. Indeed.

  • This is the only Christmas song worth listening to.

  • Can the 180,000 people who've watched this video so far tell like a dozen friends about it before christmas? I wanna see this #1 on the charts!

  • Awww... I love this song! It's funny and really sweet.

  • This song is over 2 years old btw, still amazing though check out his performance of it on Enough Rope

  • when he talks about his daughter....aww.

  • First Christmas song in decades that doesn't sound forced........................... and it's from a comedian.

  • @miamikin - it's what we do down here in Australia/New Zealand at Christmas. Summertime you see :D

  • @nataleeza He gets really warm down this way

  • @nataleeza It gets really warm down this way so we keep ourselves cool by drinking a nice chilled glass of white wine

  • I love this song, but can anyone explain the relevance of white wine in the sun? I've always assumed it's just a reference that I don't get, but it would be really great if someone could explain it.

  • @miamikin9 When its winter in America, its actually 'summer' in the Southern Hemisphere. It sounds like his family celebrates Christmas outdoors with white wine.

  • LMFAO! 2:05 turn on Transcribe Audio :P

  • And they say atheists are bad people....

  • after seeing the "behind stage" movie. i most say that i understand the song much better. very beautiful song!

  • I'm seeing this guy live 10 days before Christmas, and this is probably the song I'm most looking forward to hearing live. Beautiful song and it totally sums up my feelings about Christmas!

  • @silentbob82 Have some white wine then for me when you see him. <3 I really wish I could see him too. ^__^

  • @dominicehamilton yeaah i know that, just turn on the transcribe audio, it makes a hilariously bad attempt at...well transcribing audio.

  • @CystVonCysor just turn on the transcribe audio and you'll see:), kinda ruins the serious nature of the song but ah well.

  • "And yes I have all of the usual objections to the miseducation of children forced into a cult institution And taught to externalise blame..."

I've heard another version where the words are slightly changed:

"And yes I have all of the usual objections to the miseducation of children who in tax-exempt institutions Are taught to externalise blame..."

I suppose either works. I wonder which was the original.

    T.

  • @qwertyTRiG Cult institution is the original. And he actually changes which lyrics he sings based on the audience he's preforming to. First and foremost, he's an entertainer who wants the people who come to his shows to enjoy themselves... I guess it just comes off as a bit too preachy to some people.

  • if u want even more funny turn on the transcribe audio in the cc

  • I almost cried...

  • The most beautiful music...

  • I Love this Song!!

  • Beautiful.

  • I absolutely love this, brings me to tears every time!

  • Ah love it!

  • Just wonderful! Really. Never mind Slade and "Here It Is Merry Christmas" on Radio 2, THIS should become the new Christmas classic song.

Thank you so much for posting the lyrics,

    brilliant.

  • Tim Minchin for Christmas #1 2010?

  • Fuck I love this song :)

  • this song makes u think bout wat is really important at that time of year. family. cause u don't no how long u have wit some1 until they r gone.

  • this song realy makes me want to cry! I LOVE HIM! he is so emotional in his performance.

  • I love it :)

  • The verses about his daughter make me want to cry ha, they're so sweet.

  • Thats Really Cute And Makes You Respect Christmas Without Going To Church Or Reading The Bible xx No Effence

  • He could sing in every registry, he sure would be perfect for pop songs

  • after hearing david tennant play this on radio 4's desert island disks, i knew i had to have another listen. Both amazing people.

    merry christmas all! :)

  • @hanz12234 It was really lovely what he (David) said about this song, I listened to DID too :)

This is a really beautiful song. :')

  • @hanz12234 omg, David Tennant put this on his discs? I knew he had amazing taste!! xD Tim Minchin is beyond amazing... This song is one of the best, though Drowned is probably by fave... But aww, love David Tennant even more now too... which I didn't think was possible.

  • Merry Christmas to everyone watching. Thanks for 126,807 views. Enjoy the holidays and here's to a great new year!

  • Merry Christmas timothy! And all his fans

  • And you!

  • Merry Christmas :)

  • Listening to this as i go to bed on christmas eve. - got all the family round, this song means more to me now than it ever has - for the first time in a while, I'll be seeing my dad, my brother my sisters my gran and my mum :) Xx Merry Christmas xX

  • Aahh.. i love this so much.. :')

  • This song deserves to become a Christmas classic. It's just so beautiful. As close to perfect as music can get.

  • That is really cute, funny and hormotional

  • This makes me a bit teary every time.

The last time I saw it live I teared up, but admittedly Tim's little smile to himself when singing about his daughter cheered me up (because he has of course had a little son since this was written) Lovely song.

  • @HowlieThePointless

It could still make sense in the future because he talks about her brother :)

  • Not in the original version, since she didn't have one ;)

  • i love this song tim minchin is more of a lyric person than the actual rythm he is like a god to all my mates n me he is legend

  • This guy is just great. He makes these songs sound simple and they are not.

Funny, witty, clever, sad and tuneful. Brilliant

  • Next Christmas, I WILL be nine thousand miles from home. Why do I get the feeling I'm going to listen to this and bawl?

  • you will - that's precisely what I am doing right now in Germany :-)

  • me, too. even in the same country! cheers.

  • I ♥ Tim,

lets get this in the top 40...

He really deserves the acknowledgement :') Love You x

  • This needs to be number 1, not some X factor or ratm crap!

  • the lyrics are just beyond...

his voice fits well too...great song

  • woo!

  • Immense and beautiful, I think I got something in my eye towards the end there...

This surely cements Tim's rep as a genius.

  • I like Tim's songs. He's a rational thinker and takes pleasure in the simple things, but god damn his audiences laugh like retards sometimes.

  • brillient! get it to number 1!!!!

  • This is the only Christmas song I absolutely adore. No Santa, no Jesus (either is fine if you believe in them but I personally don't), just family. I'd listen to this at Christmas instead of the usual pap but it makes me cry :$ Great job Tim, I love you for writing this.

  • this captures the feeling of christmas perfectly

  • Why does it say cult institution instead of tax-exempt?

  • what's the only difference between most "cults" and "major religions"?

  • Yes, I wasn't arguing the point, but in the official video Tim Minchin put up recently of this song, that line is changed. I was wondering if there were simply two versions, or what.

  • heh, maybe too many people got PO'ed those cult institutions tend to cause that sort of reaction.

  • yeah he also changed the line to "but the lyrics are spooky" instead of dodgy. Maybe his legal team offered some advice?

  • Wow, that is beautiful

  • Best X-mas song ever.

  • Tim Minchin for christmas #1? If everyone that was a fan bought another album, it'd atleast get to top 20 surely...

  • I'm with you on that plan!

  • Tim Minchin shouldn't be able to make me cry. Dammit.

  • i just love this man in the most heterosexual way possible

  • makes me all tearful. I love it

  • There are bits where he sounds like Michael Stipe.

  • Made me cry, too.

  • this song made me cry! its so beautiful!

  • The best Christmas song... EVER!

  • so funny and sweet.

    <3

  • AWESOME! Tim you are genius.

  • Is it weird that I cried a bit whilst listening? :P

  • @queendixie94 If it is then I'm weird as well!

  • I started tearing up when he started singing about his little girl

  • no not at all.... so beautiful

  • It won't be a white Christmas for Tim. :) More like sunny and warm~

  • he doesn't live in Australia anymore. he moved to London around 2 yrs ago. unless you mean visiting his family :\

  • I did assume he'd be visiting family, yes. :)

  • i hope its a white xmas but dont think it will be its not cold enough now 8 degress in december is like 24 degress in june

  • This is my holiday song for this years Winter solstice.

    Great stuff. :)

  • MAS, then cry :) , :(

  • Tim is God.

  • I'm Glad that this doesn't offend me because of my faith.

Because all of Tim's work is brilliant.

    an this is Extraordinarily Beautiful.

    <3

  • i love this song. i find it so relaxing. Minchin God of Music MAS

  • outstanding, Tim. Keep up the fantastic work.

  • i live away from home, my parents are in South Africa - and it is christmas, when we can drink wine in the sun - and living in the uk without them makes me so sad round christmas time. This song sums it up soo beautifully - Tim is AMAZING xx

  • So so so beautiful! This song was so emotional live! All I could think about is my amazing girlfriend and fucking awesome family. Good stuff Tim.

  • many many listens later and this song is still perfect.

in fact i'm now looking forward to xmas.

    thanks Tim!! .... (and CVC)

  • luv the entire verse wen he talks about his weee gurl! so sweet! x Tim x

  • This songs awesome, its exactly how I feel about christmas. I just love spending the time with my family and the people I care about.

And hymns do have reeeally dodgy lyrics.

  • omg this is soo sweat. goose bumps .

like this one, his face was glistnin when he sang this on tour. specially when he sang bout his family. he was just glowing

  • man i think this is the best one he has written! it give me goose pumps ^__^

  • He can write his silly songs but this one is so beautiful :) it made me want to hug all my family XD

and the line "Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords but the lyrics are dodgy" made me die with giggles lol

  • When i saw this live with my boyfriend i almost cried. Its such a sweet song. I like it when you see Tim's sweeter side.

  • I, I really like Christmas

Though I'm not expecting a visit from Jesus

    I'll be seeing my dad

My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum

They'll be drinking white wine in the sun

    I'll be seeing my dad

My sisters and brother, my gran and my mum

  • when I saw him live I was nearly sat in tears, it's so sweet!

  • Gets me every time.

  • Ahh, I'm welling up again!

I absolutely adore the line "My sweet blue-eyed girl" I'm not sure what it is about it, perhaps the way he sings it, but i just love that line.

I bloody wish i was seeing him live this time around :'(

  • I know what you mean. I got cold shivers when he sang it!

  • I saw him in Birmingham Saturday night and happy report that I gave up trying to stop myself blubbing . . .

He is truly a genius - a rare and wonderful talent

  • i heard this live last night and wow, it's just so damn sweet <3

  • Was so brilliant live!!

I was so close to crying, and my best friend (who is a big burly tough guy) couldn't hold them back XD

    Bless him!

  • he's hallerious isn't he....

    so randomly sweet!!!!

  • i am so jealous of you kelseywould!

  • amazing stuff :)

  • i preformed this when i went to see him last week, christmas is a hard time for me because i lost my dad on christmas eve a few years ago so i couldnt really sit through the whole song but i do really love this song its nice to see his softer side.

  • I'm sorry to hear that, what a horrible time to lose someone. I'm sure you can still appreciate the fact that even as a stand-up comedian, Tim can still evoke such strong feelings in people.

  • (i meant "he preformed this" of course lol)

yeah thats why i love him so much. this song makes me feel a little sad and sometimes makes me cry but its touching and at least i know if i get too down while listening to this i can go straight onto one of his funny songs to cheer myself up. he's a truly talented musical/comical genius!

  • Very similar experience and story for me too last week in Hammersmith superspecialxxkxx. Shame we couldn't share a stiff drink toasting our Dads afterwards as tears flowed and I felt awful after such a brilliant night out.

  • I love this song, I heard it for the first time when he finished his set with in in Belfast, N.Ireland last week. Very poignant song and fantastically performed. Awesome concert.
