They come standard with AM, CW, LSB, USB, you have to get an FM board to do that. The reason is, because FM isn't used on 160-12 meters much...if at all. 10 meters yes. But in general, hams use FM on the vhf and uhf bands.
They are a nice radio, very heavy duty and well built. Made better and will last longer than any cb radio on the market. I would definitely get one over a receiver. Getting your ham radio license is easy, 50 question test (multiple choice) no morse code. Tons of people to talk to, whereas cb radio is pretty much a dead thing. Anyways, you can get these radios used for a little over $400 bucks.
@beast6228 the 50 question test is for extra, Tech and general if i remember right are 35 or 36, its been a while since i took my tech exam. hope to take and pass my general in a few weeks.
@godzilla74114 Yeah that's what I did way back when, I knew I was gonna pass the test so I went and bought all the equipment. You'll like the 718, put a decent microphone on it and you'll have really nice audio on the airwaves. I've had several of these radios over the years and they never let me down yet. Tough little sets.
@beast6228 now i need to go find a wire antenna for the attic, i got quite a bit of room up there, and i'm interested in building a wire antenna that can be used on most if not all of the HF bands, without a tuner. i haven't the patience to deal with tuning antennas. :P
No, but I have had several of these radios over the years and it doesn't make much of a difference with or without one. People will say it will, but it's an audio dsp, not an IF dsp so there is big difference between the two.
thanks for posting this please when you can make more am trying to talk my dad into getting one for his mini-shack in this help me prove to him they are good radios
ICOM has always made a good radio, this thing will last a very long time, they are built like a tank. I would own an ICOM over a yaesu any day. And trust me, I've owned dozens of radios over the years.
Due to the bad winter I've had here I couldn't put up a decent antenna, so I've been using a 80 meter hamstick. The LDG is really a great tuner for the money, tunes fast and always tunes a low SWR. I never had a problem getting out there too, if I can hear them, I can work them.
I made this video in the morning, so the band wasn't in the greatest of shape. But for those people who are cb'ers, the ham bands are a lot different than the cb band, you can talk to the same people everyday across long distances basically forever. Unlike the cb band where you can talk dx to far away places, but you can't always talk to the same people everyday. It's totally different.
CB was fun back in the day, I had a lot of fun on there. But when you grow up and want some decent and intelligent conversation, you look for something more organized and reliable. CB radio is pretty much dead across the country. The only people who talk are the ones in small towns or rural areas or the truck drivers. Ham radio is dying too, but you can normally find someone to talk to. The internet and cell phones are to blame for that.
Yeah, but i doubt that HAM radio will ever die, there to many people into it. I have started a Ham radio club at my high school with 47 members and 22 members with a general license and 13 with a tech. license and all the rest studying to get there tech license.
Why thank you! You know i just got this same radio from my dad for Christmas yesterday with a nice 10-80 dipole with a choke blun built in and ready to go out of the box and a Z-100 plus tuner so i have a nice little setup, and im getting my General ticket next month so i can expand my HF privileges a bit more beyond 10 meters and 6 meters :P
Hi ! Please let me know if you know the diference between your Antena TunerLDG Z11 PRo to LDG IT100 that sounds is made for ic-718 ?

@ps7mw I don't know anything about the LDG IT100, but the LDG Z11 PRo will work on any radio.

@godzilla74114 Thanks for the reminder, it's been a while. But the General test is easy, about the same thing as the Technician.

I really like these IC-718's for the price, I've had 3 of them over the last couple years, I had a FT-840 too, but the ICOM was 10x's better.
beast6228 2 years ago
I love icom's for hf but I love yeasu's for vhf and uhf kenwood it's not worth it way to much for way to less

Got an ic 718 here, too.

What exactly are you trying to do in this video?
kriston55 3 years ago
Trying to contact martians from other planets.
beast6228 2 years ago
I have the exact setup as your and it works ok for me. I also do some mods to ic-718 and it is working beautiful.

Indeed 11m is for people how don't want to take the time to get a license and do it right. They should call it the Crap Band.

As long as there are people like you around, then it probably won't die. You're a pretty intelligent, helpful young man.
