In 1948 The UN partitioned the land into Israel and Palestine creating the state of Israel (where no Jewish state had existed for nearly 2000 years) within defined borders. Since then Israel has encroached on land that was given to the Palestinians. If you strip away the spin of Israels propaganda machine, you're left with Israel occupying land that is not legally theirs. A lot more people will sympathise with Israel if she returns to 67 borders.

And as for the Palestinians, it was the Arab countries who persuaded them to leave and promised them they could return after the overthrow of Israel's government. That, of course, did not happen. And Israel treats its minorities far better than the Muslim countries treat theirs, but the liberal media ignores that. Israel is only guilty of defending herself against those who wish to destroy her.

Some stayed, most left. Of the ones who left, it would be misleading to ignore the role of the Israeli army, and other militant groups, in pressuring them to leave their land (whatever other forces where also at play).
Israel likes to see itself as a modern, enlightened state. In Europe and the US we have made great progress over the last 40 years in our treatment of minorities. We do not have laws which discriminate between ethnic or religious groups in terms of buying property or land.

I dont think the west can be complacent on this, but my impression is that Israel has a long way to catch up and should not be patting itself on the back (my impression is that things have got worse in terms of public attitudes to Arabs/Palestinians over the last 10 years).

The attacks and incursions by Israel into neighbouring territories since 1967 have cost thousands of lives (most notably in Lebanon). I dont see either side as blameless. There is a strong tendency in all populations to be tribal (its part of human nature) trouble is, the Israeli propaganda machine has been so efficient at telling its side of the story, to its own people, that few in Israel have much understanding of the other sides grievances.
