Seriously, you're probably looking at doing a degree in electronics and then a few years post-grad experience to be able to design something like this.
You need to be able program microprocessors as well as design the electronics (motor drives, etc.)
Maplin or Radioshack might have a starter kit though?

well I'm 18 an i built my own hexapod no problem u dont need a master degree or things like that u just need to be persistant and use the internet to the max

Now tired you can see it requires considerable torque getting itself up.
Servo's are Cool.
I've always been intrigued with stepper motors ever since the early 70's.
Electronic salvage shops I spend hours repeatedly.

our dog was about €700, and to get it my parents drove from south france and back to the middle of the Netherlands.
