It's Amazing!! As a personal opinion, Mr. Camilo is out of this world not only because he can perform like this, but because he "invented" it. Before, no one played latin with this kind of stride technique and soloing at the same time. Now if a profesional player practice 10hs a day, maybe in a year he can do it no only with this song but with many other, but he will be playing "Michelle Camilo Style". Now as latin jazz pianist I like Gonzalo Rubalcaba a bit more. What do you all think?

@MUSAsTrio i'm new to mr. camilo-- love this video-- but since around '91 (when 'Images: live at mt. fuji' came out), I've loved gonzalo rubalcaba-- he has an energy that borders on the supernatural, and a style that brims with verve and invention! TOTALLY love him!
@MrSunofbeach all because youre black doesnt mean you can play the plays, and just because youre latin doesnt mean playing the blues doesnt come as easy. Camilo, Corea, Mehldau, and countless others can blues out their ass
What is most pleasurable is that an American percussionist is playing a latin form, and a Dominican pianist is playing the jazz form, which one could look at as cross-culture sharing. Beautiful :)
@danieljones013 If you're talking about the percussionist, the instrument is obviously designed for that genre... but I'm not quite sure what you mean. :)
@danieljones013 Yeah I know what you mean. It's a jazz technique (I'm sure I've seen other jazz pianists do it) is it not an octave? But with the Latin sound, I think it's got more to do with the rhythms he uses. :)
@SebastienLoong It doesnt seem like an octave... im not sure wether it is parallel sixths, but im not sure i tried sixths and octives. I can play octives with one hand it doesnt sound close. What do think the interval is? He starts playing the technique at 3:40
@SebastienLoong If you pause it while he plays it it looks like the same note two octaves apart... one note in the bass cleff and the same note two octaves above that. What do you think?
@bilgez25: You mean more like 9 million, don't you! (smile!!). I saw Michel in concert at Lehman College (Bronx, NY!) with Eddie Palmieri - El Maestro! BUT, Eddie better watch out - he's the Old Master, to be sure, a legend also - BUT, El Dominicano, (the Dominican Flash), and his drummer, a young cat, took the audience on a musical journey not to be believed! The drummer went through about 6 pairs of drumsticks!! Watch Michel with Chucho and see what Latin Piano Heaven must be like!!
Erikisimo is right: that's exactly what Camilo is doing in his left hand.
If you want to feel the tension of the tumbado against the beat, concentrate on the RIGHT hand, where Camilo nearly always plays on the first beat every two bars, just as the "clave" indicates. This becomes more obvious at 1:51 and 2:36, where he's actually playing montunos.
Once you can hear the rhythmic tension between both hands, this kind of music will open up for you.
his stride piano is amazing... he plays the chord on the first beat then the bass note... i've been playing jazz piano for over 20yrs and cant work how he does it and how it works... but it does
no, ur wrong, even if you cant hear the chord on the first beat from :50 onwards you can see the position of the left hand... he does play the chord on the first beat.... in fact, lookin again at his left hand ur wrong again, its harmony, fifth, root - with the root falling on the second beat of the bar
nah, still don't agree - remember the picture is delayed.
find the beat and u'll hear it, no theoretic explanations needed - and furthermore, it wouldn't make much sense playing chord and then bass note right after - especially not in a bossa !
i cant think of many styles when playing the chord then the bass note would be standard, doesnt make it wrong tho. you're also wrong about the style, it may be called blue bossa but this is no bossa style - far from it - its more of a conga style. the percussionist is not playing a bossa pattern and the bass lacks the root and fifth on the 1st and 3rd beat
bleh, thats true - it's usually played as a bossa tho, i was sleeping when i wrote the comment ;D i dont understand what u mean about the bass lackin stuff.. (:
the bass isnt lackin at all, just what i meant was if it were a bossa the tempo would probably be a lot slower with the left hand playing root on the 1st and fifth on the 3rd beat.... you might be right about the stride playing tho, its difficult because the vid is slightly out of sync with the music, i think - like you say - the bass note is played on the 1st beat but played an octave higher, after the chord, the hand then drops the octave to play the fifth
I can put this conversation to a LEGITIMATE end. its in 2/2. But lets just agree on 4/4 for ease of explanation. the standard afro-cuban stride (which of course he is playing) is MEASURE 1: Beat 1: Bass Root Beat 2: chord (usually 4 note close jazz voicings) Beat 3: Dominant of the Root Beat 4: Root MEASURE 2: & of 1: Chord & of 2: Dominant (dotted quarter) Beat 4: Root so basically: 1, 2, 3, 4 [] _ &, _ &~3, 4
The bass is playing Tumbao - It is a leading pattern wherein the the 5 of the next chord is played on the 2& and the root of the next chord is played on 4.
The bass part is always looking to the next measure.
Michel Camilo's left hand is one of the most dexterous I have seen in any pianist. His ability to jump up and back down is beyond belief. Besides, his coordinationg and independence of the right hand makes you think he has two brains: one for each hand...
Este señor llamado michel camilo es verdaderamente un prodigio de los pocos que a habido en la historia del piano!! y nosotros la gente de esta epoca somos afortunados de tenerlo Caminando entre nosotros aun
