This is actually a great choice for a number 1. In my experience, it's for sure the best RPG of the 3D era of games. It's the game that has done a best job translating the experience of the 2D RPGs to a 3D world, very much because it leaves some things intact and doesn't try to overhaul everything.

I remember that I only bought DQVIII for the FFXII demo but I ended up enjoying it much more than FF12 when it came out. In fact, DQVIII became one of my most favorite JRPG ever with the likes of FFVII, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and Suikoden II.
First, great choice. I'd say there are games with better story and character development, but Dragon Quest VIII is just pure fun and has great re-play value.
Now, while I respect your choices I still miss the Suikoden series, especially #5 which my own personal favorite in the series and the Baldur's Gate series (#2!!!), which, apart from being great, is also one of the most customizable game series out there. Still, great list, got me inspired to try out two of them.
I looooovvvveeee, this game. Level-5 is an amazing company, and Rogue Galaxy by them is also fantastic, been playing these games again recently, and there even more amazing the next time around.
Good game, but a pain in the dick to level up later on...You more or less have to sit there and yell "King Slime, you will NOT run away! I don't want to spend hours getting to level 45!"

i agree with you DQ8 was my top1 rpg games on ps2. i love this game very much. i dont see anything to be dislike about this game from the start till the end ^^ i love a happry ending games. actually i played it about 4x never get tired of it ^^.
@NecroVMX I loved Legacy of the Wizard, especially the music. My dad and I used to play it when I was younger. I enjoyed using the guy with the axe and using the girl that could jump extremely high.
This video made me regret selling my PS2 years ago. Great series of videos as well, I don't get all the assholes nitpicking in the comments come on people. The only substitute I would probably make would be losing the Castlevania (I never could get into that series. I still have nightmares of trying to beat Simons Quest as a child and getting so frustrated i was throwing controllers and on occasion the game itself) for Final Fantasy 9. Its such an overlooked game and is much much better than 8.

Have you considered if the list would be different if each game were judged individually, rather than by series? There have been several outstanding Ultima Games, arguably several great DQ and FF games, and so on. Do you think any games from a particular series would have bumped other games off this list?
This is a great game, no doubt. The only gripe I have with this game is the maddening number of random encounters. Seriously. I know this might be anathema to you, but I would have preferred it if I could see the enemies I fight (much like the monster you collect coins from), and avoid them... or bump into them to start the fight. For me, this issue really detracts from the game!

this and Chrono Trigger are my two favorite rpgs of all time. This one showed me how much you could actually put into an rpg. This rpg was so ginormous.

Honorable mentions Borderlands, FF6 or FF3 for America, WOW, Golden Sun series, Monster hunter, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Dragon Quest 6, Super Mario RPG, Fire Emblem series, Digimon world series, Star Ocean, Suikoden 2, and FF tactics.

I'm not much of an rpg fan, but after watching a friend play about half an hour of DQ8, I've been meaning to give it a go. Looked like a lot of fun, is there a lot of grinding/slogging/leveling up involved in this one? (Compared to other rpg's.)
Pardon me, but really, really, no Baldur's gate? Now, I know that comming here and *demanding* a game is rather, well daft due to it beeing a personal list and it's your oppinion not mine, but it gave birth to a whole generation of great RPGs. Seeing that you clearly don't jugde games by influence (FF7 not here :D) that would have no effect on Baldur's gates position, but it is, more than any of these games a *true* RPG and an amazing experience, so you are either daft or you haven't played it.

Any thoughts on Dragon Quest 9 in comparison to this? Personally, I thought it was the biggest letdown sequel since the real FF2, but that's just me.

i agree with you DQ8 was my top1 rpg games on ps2. i love this game very much. i dont see anything to be dislike about this game from the start till the end ^^ i love a happry ending games. actually i played it about 4x never get tired of it ^^.

@NecroVMX I loved Legacy of the Wizard, especially the music. My dad and I used to play it when I was younger. I enjoyed using the guy with the axe and using the girl that could jump extremely high.

This video made me regret selling my PS2 years ago. Great series of videos as well, I don't get all the assholes nitpicking in the comments come on people. The only substitute I would probably make would be losing the Castlevania (I never could get into that series. I still have nightmares of trying to beat Simons Quest as a child and getting so frustrated i was throwing controllers and on occasion the game itself) for Final Fantasy 9. Its such an overlooked game and is much much better than 8.

Have you considered if the list would be different if each game were judged individually, rather than by series? There have been several outstanding Ultima Games, arguably several great DQ and FF games, and so on. Do you think any games from a particular series would have bumped other games off this list?

This is a great game, no doubt. The only gripe I have with this game is the maddening number of random encounters. Seriously. I know this might be anathema to you, but I would have preferred it if I could see the enemies I fight (much like the monster you collect coins from), and avoid them... or bump into them to start the fight. For me, this issue really detracts from the game!
Anyway, thanks for the list. It was an enjoyable watch :)

@shaolinfingas Personally, i'll agree with Necro, Chrono Cross > Chrono Trigger, you think Chrono Trigger is so great, but yet you probably think of it as just a sequel, and not as a Game in itself, it's story is so much better then Chrono Trigger's aswell (in my opinion), but as for your top Necro, i was never into the Dragon Quest Series much, but i do agree after watching this i do like the art style alot, and I'll have to give the series a try. Good List, was a nice watch.

When you put something on youtube, the main purpose would be sharing it. you cant give people the finger, or ask them to do dirty thinsg with your ass, when they have an opinion about it. in that case its just as easy to ask you to shove that list up.. some place dirty :P

I'm not much of an rpg fan, but after watching a friend play about half an hour of DQ8, I've been meaning to give it a go. Looked like a lot of fun, is there a lot of grinding/slogging/leveling up involved in this one? (Compared to other rpg's.)

Pardon me, but really, really, no Baldur's gate? Now, I know that comming here and *demanding* a game is rather, well daft due to it beeing a personal list and it's your oppinion not mine, but it gave birth to a whole generation of great RPGs. Seeing that you clearly don't jugde games by influence (FF7 not here :D) that would have no effect on Baldur's gates position, but it is, more than any of these games a *true* RPG and an amazing experience, so you are either daft or you haven't played it.
