Your last assumption is wrong. When I was in China during the Olympics, people in my family were openly discussing this issue. So what you've heard is baseless and probably credited to western media (I know cause I had similar ideas like yours before I went back to China). Second of all, the little girl actually don't feel robbed at all. Understand national pride in China is huge. So to the little girl, she just feels proud to have contributed her part to the Olympics.

Millions of Chinese people's hard work, blood and sweat over several years just to make the game a success, all that been forgotten and neglected. Chinese shouldn't have welcomed foreigners to Beijing at all, they come to find faults and laugh about it. Chinese are just too naive. You spent billions and years of hard work, this is all you got.
Sometimes people have to learn their lesson the hard way. Do they realize how they've probably affected those girls' self-esteem? Lin Miaoke is pretty, but Yang Peiyi is not ugly! She's very cute and her "flaws" make her even more so. She has a wonderful voice and she should be recognized for it. y'know, none of you complained in 2006 when Pavarotti had to lip-sync over himself in the Turin opening ceremony. when you're creating a spectacle, sometimes appearance has to reside over performance quality, which can mean putting a pretty face in place of a talented person. it happens all the time in showbusiness EVERYWHERE but you guys don't throw an outrage about that do you? i'm not saying this was acceptable, but you can't reprimand china for doing something everyone else is guilty of.

He was also lipping to HIS OWN VOICE and not some unseen performer, and it was too cold for the old guy who actually had cancer at the time and died not long after. BIG difference!

um, geekdiggy, there's a difference: Pavarotti dubbed over HIMSELF. I'm sure there would have been a huge uproar if they'd told Pavarotti that he was too ugly/fat and that he had to lipsynch for a stand in male model or Brad Pitt type instead.

geekdiggy, I'll openly tell anyone (complain) that I was let down when I heard Pavorotti lip synced. To stoop to the level of Milli Vanilli, Ashley Simpson, and pretty much every Superbowl singer was a disgrace, especially considering his great career.
The reason why THIS was so disgraceful was that some asshole figured that manufacturing a perfect image for his nation was worth destroying a little girls dreams.

Interesting that the ceremonys musical director (probably risking his own life) came right out and said it wasn't up to him and he was forced to do this by the Communist "Politiboro" leaders.

Well I agree that Yang was cute, crooked teeth and all, but come on! We're hypocrites. Just look at what our entertainment business does to our young artists in order to make them look the part. In the US we probably would have ditched them both and kept searching for a little girl who could both sing AND was cute!

Well, here we are in our "Barbie and Ken" world. The little girl who actually sang is CUTE AS A BUTTON! What a farce! It seems to me that the best thing China can do, is to let the little girl with the beautiful voice sing - again - in public. I believe whoever made that imbecilic decision will be flabbergasted at the people's enthusiastic response.

Yang Peiyi is absolutely gorgeous. China has damage this child for life by not seeing her beauty. In the openning ceremony I notice that no one wore glasses in their performances and the men all had the same hair cut. What is that all about. Beauty comes in all colors, styles, shapes, personalities,flaws and all. Wake up China and embrace this child with love and admoration for who she is..Yang Peiyi you are beautiful.

If the story is true, I totally agree with you Daspianist, but call all chinese people stupid is wrong. This kind of decision is taken without consulting everyone, so you can't call all of them stupid. One of the best messages I've read said that he would not watch the games, this kind of attitude really will bother the right persons. Don't you agree?

How many little kids in this world have crooked teeth? How many 9 year olds look like Lin Miaoke? Yang Peiyi looks like an adorable child with the usual characteristics, and Lin Miaoke is cute too, but Yang should've been up there where she belongs.
