And I didnt goto college (thank god), only military in usa yet they give these ridiculous ass classes that you need to goto which are basically life saving courses and so on. Yeah I didnt pay attention. Anyways they give you college credits for knowing about that stuff when you get out as long as you had proof of doing those courses that take like 2 years to do when you can do it in military for like 4 months.

As a follow up to my comments. I was Not a member of the Foreign Legion and I do NOT speak French. The legion is made up of people from all over the world. In basic training, several languages are spoken as you attend French language classes and you Will learn the language or suffer. You also can not travel outside the country on leave (which is rare to get). Once you have honorable served, you will be offered French citizenship. I'm not saying they are the best..but they are among the best.
The Legion does not take everyone . You go through interviews, PT test, and evaluations. You must surrender your passport, you cant have a bank account, a car, or marry. If you have a wife or dependent--that is your problem. The legion provides no assistance to them
. You can keep your name or assume another identity. Criminals most likely not accepted.. You WILL have to learn to speak and write French-- (Thats one way to spot the phonys) My unit was at a base near the Legion.
What gets me is why French men would join the FFL. You're a Frenchman, not a foreigner! Or is it for different opportunities that the regular French military doesn't have?
that is the French army I saw in Afghanistan getting drunk and stoned but also getting killed because they are not all that! The Taliban put an IED right in front of their base because they didn't pay attention. They spend most of their time eating and drinking wine and shit not concentrating on the war like the US Forces do That is the truth.

Ask them before buying your tickets, but I think it will be ok. You can go to any foreign legion office as they are always open (24/7/365). You don't even have to speak french, but you will have to learn it fast :D

@godgrant123. Once in Paris, ask any taxi driver to take you to the Fort de Nogent. If in Marseille, ask to be taken to La Malmousque. The main entry gate is clearly marked and easily recognisable. Take a deep breath, knock on the door or go to see the posted sentry. There's no secret handshake, no magic phrase, no special gesture. Blurting out “volontaire pour Legion” is more than sufficient to make them see what your business is and everything will be taken care of after that. T

The brother of my Grandmother was in the FFL and served in Indochina...they made him drunk and let him sign the recruitung papers...the next day they picked him up and bang, he was in Indochina. He never spoke very much about this time, but the little he told me was pure horror. But that was in the past, know they are really elite.
It's incredible, for some people the history of the french army begins and finishes with the WWII !! Give me one country, just one, which never had defeats... French were the first to give a chance to coloured people to fight for universal values in an european country, don't forget it ! And that's this diversity which allows the efficenty of the FFL. And I do think it's the same thing for any society: diversity, respect, esprit de corps, those are the key elements of a social success.

As a follow up to my comments. I was Not a member of the Foreign Legion and I do NOT speak French. The legion is made up of people from all over the world. In basic training, several languages are spoken as you attend French language classes and you Will learn the language or suffer. You also can not travel outside the country on leave (which is rare to get). Once you have honorable served, you will be offered French citizenship. I'm not saying they are the best..but they are among the best.

The Legion does not take everyone . You go through interviews, PT test, and evaluations. You must surrender your passport, you cant have a bank account, a car, or marry. If you have a wife or dependent--that is your problem. The legion provides no assistance to them
. You can keep your name or assume another identity. Criminals most likely not accepted.. You WILL have to learn to speak and write French-- (Thats one way to spot the phonys) My unit was at a base near the Legion.

I had a friend in high school who idolized the FFL and I never understood it. I spent 16 yrs. in the U.S Marine Corps, most of them in Force Recon. I joined at 17 yrs of age. I thought often times when getting out to give the FFL a go, I was in extremely great shape but still in the American SPECOPS community I felt I was considered as getting to the top of the hill even though not quite over the hill yet.. After learning more about it I wish I had. Their comraderie is legendary.

@TheJEANFB my bad..it was 1870/71...in late summer 1870 the french army was slapped in few weeks by the prussian/german army you idiot and Napoleon III taken prisoner but France refused to give up and continued fighting as Republic but in spring 1871 the prussian army sieged Paris and finally France gave up. The real fighting only took about 6 weeks...learn your own history...you are dumber than a toast

Question: If I was charged with a misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia in the U.S. over ten years ago, will that prevent me from enlisting in the French Foreign Legion? I have no felonies and am not a drug user. I was a pot smoker, but have been clean for some time. If anyone knows the answer to this question that would be much appreciated! Thanks.

@7reptile7Master They check your record through INTERPOL, but unless you are a wanted man or have a heavy duty criminal record you are OK. Good luck.

Why is it that when all nationalities are represented in a video they go as far as "black man" and "white man". I know the Frech Foreign Legion take everyone so why not make the entire world happy by dropping in an Asian fellow for a comment or two.

@godgrant123. Once in Paris, ask any taxi driver to take you to the Fort de Nogent. If in Marseille, ask to be taken to La Malmousque. The main entry gate is clearly marked and easily recognisable. Take a deep breath, knock on the door or go to see the posted sentry. There's no secret handshake, no magic phrase, no special gesture. Blurting out “volontaire pour Legion” is more than sufficient to make them see what your business is and everything will be taken care of after that. T

I'll write that down, I'll know some french phrases by then, done 2 years at school. so should be ok!..
Have you gone to it? if so how much money did you take and how long.. if you didn't what would you take, as the advice on their website may be wrong like perhaps only take 2 days

The brother of my Grandmother was in the FFL and served in Indochina...they made him drunk and let him sign the recruitung papers...the next day they picked him up and bang, he was in Indochina. He never spoke very much about this time, but the little he told me was pure horror. But that was in the past, know they are really elite.

It's incredible, for some people the history of the french army begins and finishes with the WWII !! Give me one country, just one, which never had defeats... French were the first to give a chance to coloured people to fight for universal values in an european country, don't forget it ! And that's this diversity which allows the efficenty of the FFL. And I do think it's the same thing for any society: diversity, respect, esprit de corps, those are the key elements of a social success.

a good fighting branch ,but only for rugged . In this branch all ready to fight and die when you enlist in this military branch its not like the U.S. in the legion you will wake up freeze and make pain your friend when you fight !. nice video man

current usmc active duty.
I have family in the legion and trust its not easy and you have to sacrifice everything your language,family friends.
