Well that could be my favorite live performance of all time: the dynamic between them is pretty amazing. I'm aware that Yorke doesn't swing that way, but there's no doubt that Stipe wouldn't mind it ;-)
That isn't going to help the Tibetans. What we need to? do is invent some kinda new super weapon that can kill everyone in China then tell the Chinese 'get the fuck outta Tibet or you're gonna get it'. Singing a bunch of songs to a loada stoned neo-hippies isn't going to do any good...even if they are great songs like most R.E.M songs are.

@Coolshitdudes I believe you are right it appears to be Gaddafi. NATO and the UN should have looked for him in REM. Have heard the sad news that REM have split after 31 brilliant years together.
I was there. The sound system at RFK Stadium was terrible that day. Still cool seeing Thom Yorke perform with R.E.M. (and Michael, Mike, and Peter perform with Radiohead the previous day).
Jew like the way they put their arms around eachother at the end and then Michael gives him that looong hummasexshul kiss on the ear. I bet they got down and all freaky gay sex like with themselves after the show.
Agree with msbutterflydragon about the discussion of who's better. Really, who cares? (Also, just because one song is more complex than another doesn't mean it is better.) This is a great track. Michael and Thom sound great!!
@annie123454 you say that because you haven't covered both Radiohead and REM songs. Rh isi nfluenced by REM but their guitar lines are sometimes really complex , hard and so amazing, while REm's are delightful but yet a bit easy. Peter Buck likes to be oscillating around Em scale chords, while Radiohead variates a bit more.
I absolutely love this song, to me, it combines the modern R.E.M with these hints of their past, like Fables of the Re-construction meets Automatic for the People. YEAH! It's like eating Kung-Pao Chicken with a Guinness...it's ALL good mofos.
That's strange, I listened to this song the other day and thought to myself that Thom Yorke would be good as the backing vocalist, and KAPOW! - look what turns up on YouTube..
However I think he did lose control of his arms and legs after a while...
Beautiful song.
@budwhite1 - REM are so much better than Coldplay, and unlike half of the American bands around in our time, their songs actually mean something more than the American dream.
REM are ok but they are not in the same league as Radiohead and even Coldplay. The only American bands that can live with them are Killers and Pumpkins.
@spongey222 ok thom york is talented but always got the impression he thinks he better than he is iv heard stories of him being rude and in my book tats arrogance there no need 4 tat thom cop on and be nice maybe its all tat depressing music he producing lol
@annie123454 hes not arrogant, hes just naturally reclusive......and if you think radioheads music is depressing you need to listen more because even though its not the most immeadiate music in the world, the real messages in their music can be found after multiple listens
@cillianc09 radioheads first 2 albums i found brill then after that i found them depressing and trust me i know alot of people who think the same so i find your comments very patronising, your not right and im not right its a matter of opinion, sorry
@annie123454 i used to think that way but after a while, I stopped finding them depressing and started liking them, today I'm a huge fan, you should give it a chance, I think is easier to Radiohead fans to become REM fans than vice versa, mostly because Radiohead composes so different syles, and they are open to anything
haha if you have ever done acid you can clearly tell thom is trippin hard. could you imagine peaking while on stage with REM in front of thousands and thousands of people? unreal
5:24 It's kinda interesting to see how there's almost a kind of mentorship going on here from Michael to Thom. Stipe's been in the music game for about 20 years at this point and Thom is a relative newcomer, dealing with the waves of attention and --pressure-- brought by OK Computer. For instance, see the film Meeting People is Easy to get an idea of the wear and tear on Thom (and his bandmates, I'm sure, they're certainly not immune).
"I'm not here, this isn't happening", right Michael?
@Mijicm Well, Thom did say at one point that Stipe pulled him out of a hole that he would never have been able to get out of otherwise. And he gave Thom the line that How to Disappear Completely is written around. So saying that he was something like a mentor to Thom isn't THAT far from the truth.
@UnrighteousFury but saying "Stipe's been in the music game for about 20 years at this point and Thom is a relative newcomer" is utterly wrong. I wouldn't go so far as to say mentorship, perhaps inspiration, yeah. :-)
I love this song, and R.E.M. and Radiohead are two of my very favourite bands... but this didn't quite work live. I wish they'd done a studio version too.
@Ragnar0k951 maybe, i don't listen to radiohead enough to distinguish whats normal for him lol. He deffinatley portrays himself that way though, which is what most musicians in his genre do. Also lets not be ignorant, drugs have played a huge role in developing great music.. ie. jimmy hendrix, nirvana, alice in chains, The Beatles, almost all great musicians do or have done drugs. Sorry to piss on Christian rock music but thats why it will never go anywhere.
REM one of the most under rated bands of all time. Their best stuff is not their most famous stuff. Listen to "Lifes Rich Pagent" it is killer awesome. True Story.
@robbieberbin How is REM underrrated? They are one of the biggest bands in the world today. How can they be underrrated when they have gotten the biggest recording contract in history? I'd hate to see what it would look like if they were overrrated. There wouldn't be enough people on planet Earth to make them overrrated.
For all the idiots watching this video: Michael Stipe is bi-sexual. He has said so in many an interview. For fucks sake, do some research and then you won't come off like ignorant dipshits.
i agree people should appreciate the music instead of focusing on the simplistic world of what we are and what we do fuck the simpletons grow up gay straight banana who cares
