Watanabe Norihiko (named correctly in Japanese) is the first guitarist considered to be able to present a "perfect" performance of classical music in Japan, and also one of the greatest guitarists in the history even today. I am very happy to have a chace to listen to his elegant music after a long absence. Thank yuo very much.
Villa Lobos' idiosynchratic genius in all its timeless beauty and poignancy, Watanabe's loving performance is masterful and deeply moving. Thanx for sharing. This is priceless!
This gutarist is one of my mentors on the guiitar. He won the first prize in Radio France International Gutar competition as a first guitarist in Japan. He was very humble and was a person who was born only to play classic guitar. Unfrotunatelly he passed away in his early 50's.
I guess that this Watanabe's recording is one of the best interpretation of this piece to my knowledge. He played this piece very often in his concerts.
Watanabe and Matsuda are usually both family names in Japan. Leading guitarst in a family name of Matsuda is "Jiro Matsuda or Akinobu Matsuda, since he change his first name during his carreer. He was a student of Andres Segovia. The top Japnese guitarist whose family name is Watanabe is "Norihiko Watanabe" as you can listen his performance.

Great tone and playing, though I have to admit Villa-lobos is one of those "fun to play, not so much to listen to" composers. A little too treacly and the sections seem awkwardly stitched together instead of flowing logically from one to the next.

dude!!! you are the onlly person so far who has actually verbalized what i've been thinking and feeling ever since i've been learning these pieces (all 5 of 'em). to me they seem awkward. and really not that much fun to play. some of the things he's asking you to do (however do-able) are really awkward and you are right, they don't have a logical flow. i guess it's the way he thinks or something. good thing music is open to interpretation. i can bring some of myself to it and help it along.
I agree with you. This piece was one of Watanabe's favorite one. He played this No.5 just after his master class. The other recommendable No.5 is the one played by Bream in my opinion. How do you feel?
Norihiko taught me Villa Lobos Prelude No.4 in his master course. But I have no source of videos, although I had a chance to listen Norihiko play Villa Lobos preludes many times. He was super.
My impression of his tone is dymanism with delicate sensitivity. As for beautiful tones on guitar to my knowledge, Segovia, Parkening and Russell, those three guitarits might be the top three.

In general I think people get roll happy with the chords. This is one of the few I've heard that at least does block chords occasionally.

The classical guitar is the most personal instrument of all. Aside the lute. I love the classical guitar so much! I feel home when I play it.

Great guitarist! What a shame that he died prematurely...

You can say that again. I guess that Villa Lobos' preludes were Norihiko Watanabe's favorite pieces.
