There is a switch further up.... I think it is the flat spots on the rail.

If its a spring switch, it will make that sound even when brand new.

That is true about the 10'000ft stack trains. 3 units upfront, 1 in the middle, 2 at the back. Reduces coupler slack by 70% I'm told.
Traffic from the piers in LA going eastbound runs about 6000 to 10,000 ft depending on volume.
