High or low range, type of tyre, diesel or petrol, lockers or not etc make very little difference when driving on sand. It is all about tyre pressure. . . drop them to 16 psi and you'll be sweet.
I prefer a diesel in high range. That way I can vary speed without changing gears. (the downfall of low range is that you have to change gears a lot more.)
This is why you don't take a car-based POS Liberty anywhere but the road where all modern SUV's belong. Yay for the conversion of the SUV into a soccer mom Van with 4 wheel drive.
Looked like a great demonstration on how to get out of a sand rut. She looked like she switched it to 4LO and got out. The jeep didnt need any help. I cant believe how many retarded comments are on this page. So much hate.
You guys weren't in LO, huh...? doesn't sound like it however. Good idea to use it if you have it, or else the engine will make a nice BBQ of both transmission and transfer case.
Is that a 2.8L diesel that I hear? My wife has an '05 Liberty CRD. We love that thing. Not the best fuel mileage but plenty of power. We have recently pulled a 12,000Lb load (24' Sailboat on a wood cradle loaded on a 20' flatbed trailer) overweight/illegal to be on the highway but we pulled it 45 miles anyway and it didn't even struggle. We also drove from NC to Utah and drove all the trails in arches national park. Great Jeep. My 1991 YJ is better off-road, but Liberty CRD is more versatile.
@199alexman You've never driven a modern diesel, have you? Sadly it's that kind of ignorance/misinformation that's preventing the US from marketing all those wonderful high MPG diesels available just about anywhere else in the world.
@199alexman I have to disagree that the diesel engine itself is a bad engine. In general, the diesel engine burns less fuel for the same amount of power as a gasoline engine, can deliver that power for longer, and they generally last longer than their gasoline engine counterparts. They also produce less carbon monoxide. They have some convenience drawbacks, but there is a reason that the trucking industry is dominated by diesel engines, they are just more efficient.
@SebastianLong Actually, they sold a diesel version of the Liberty here in the U.S. for a couple of years. It never did get very good reviews, and was mainly used to test interest in the diesel engine itself.
@keldog7 also u know that diesel is very bad engine can't be fast than gas also doesn't have much power than gas even if the diesel engine was much bigger that gas engine .
Hey can anyone help me. I have a 2007 trail rated jeep liberty with 17 inch rims but with road tires. I am really looking for some nice off road tires i believe that a 15 inch would be better for off roading and there are more tire choices for that size. So my question is what kind of tires would you recommend and what kind of rims. Thank you for your help.
@master4anything that would just make it get stuck even more... just put it in 4high and press it normal press it all the way dont wheels will turn 2 fast and just dig themselves in the sand even more
4LO is the worst thing you can do when your stuck.
4 LO is for torque multiplication. It gives you a lower ratio. Used for such things as rock crawling and trying to pull someone else out. Anytime a lot of torque is needed.
Stuck in sand or snow is the opposite.
You want the least amount of torque. 4Hi is exactly what you want.
You can even use a higher gear (numerically) so if it was manual for example you would put it in 2nd Gear and feed the clutch. 1st gear would be too much torque.
seriously? ill skip the part about too much air and not being in 4x4 to begin with. idk why people try to prove they can do stuff in 2wd and use 4x4 as a standby.
dig paths in front of your tires so you can get a run up and get back on top of the sand
You are supposed to turn the front wheels to the left and right (as you apply some throttle) so the wheels can find something to grab. And secondly using 4L in deep sand works better than 4H. That jeep happened to not be sunken in too badly.
So you suggest keeping them straight? You obviously dont know how to 4 wheel. Turning them left or right gives the wheels a better chance to grab for traction as opposed to leaving them straight and pressing the gas. If the chasis isnt buried you can get it out with certain techniques such as rocking it back and forth while turning the wheels.
@satchelmcqueencomedy Yeah my ass can travel as far as it wants without me too, how's your shitty ass IFS and low pinion steering ? Fuck the Liberty and it's POS minivan engine, XJ Cherokee for life. :)
